Inky black with faint umber accents at the edges. It's always impressive when a standard stout is this light-rejecting. The caramel nougat colored cap is a looker as well. It features a frothyfirm texture and is an excellent lace generator. Thick spider webs of foam are plastered all over the glass.

The nose easily keeps pace. Baker's chocolate leads the way, followed by sugared vanilla bean and splash of black coffee. There's nothing new or different about the aroma, it just works in a 'perfect for the style' kind of way.

Not sure that I've *ever* had a 5.0% stout with this much flavor. Or a beer of any style for that matter. There are American double stouts that don't hold a candle to this beauty. How is it that I have never heard of this brewery or this beer?

What a lovely combination of flavors and flavor sensations. First the latter. Sweetness leads things off thanks to the roasted malts. Bitterness takes over at the midway point and finishes in a rush, drying things out perfectly. Let's call it the best of both worlds in terms of sweet stout vs. dry stout.

The flavor profile is dominated by bittersweet chocolate. Also present are charred coffee beans, dark brown sugar, blackstrap molasses and vanilla, in roughly that order. Things don't change much with warming, but then they were pretty damn good to begin with.

The mouthfeel fits the flavor profile exceptionally well and is a marvel given the ABV. Bigger would almost certainly be better, but then that falls under the category of an unreasonable expectation. Besides, it might not even be an improvement.

St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout is the most surprising beer that I've had in a long time. That's mostly due to the fact that I had no expectations when the cap was cracked. This is my new favorite version of the style, hands down. Highly recommended.

Awesome pitch black color with a creamy head. I picked up on a sour, burnt aroma. Almost like charcoal, BBQ scent. The more I sipped, the more the smoke flavor came through. Low IBU. It was fairly thin viscosity, very low carbonation...almost flat. I see the 92 rating but I'm just not feeling this beer. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of any of the smoke-style beers, and wasn't expecting this oatmeal stout to be so smoke forward.
