It pours into my glass an oily black, with a dark brown thin dense head sitting on top. Roasty burned aromas waft up, fresh coffee and sweet malt.

Black and burned roasted flavours up front, with a husky but malty middle. Hints of vanilla in the finish, carried through by a soft oatmeal smoothness. This tastes exactly how I imagine stout should taste. Wow.

Finally! Good stout! This is going down so smooth and easy. I'm glad I have five more in the fridge.

Wow! It was like drinking soy sauce!No roasted coffee hints,none!Good color no head at all,it was sour pungent just horrible.Age obviosly got to this beer Iam not sure how it found its way down here in NC but Iam sure it had been siting there for awhile,I will retry at some point and re-review.

a wonderfully dark, almost black pour with a generous bronze head. Exceptionally smooth going down with great hints of roasted oates, dark chocolate and even a touch of coffee. this beer easily ranks as one of the world's top oatmeal stouts. it's my personal favorite!

Appearance – This was black and thick like engine oil with a giant head that showed great retention. The foam was like lumpy shaving cream and covered the inside of my glass as it went down. Awesome!

Smell – Wow, this is a stouty Stout. The aroma here is huge. The dark, roasted malts almost cover the oatmeal notes, but I can still pick them out. The cocoa is subtle as are the light fruits. However, as ECB said, there is a medicinal quality to the nose that rubbed me the wrong way.

Taste – This one is bitter and very dark. The oats come out much better at the taste, and the overpowering malt from the nose is back where it belongs. There’s a touch of sweetness at the finish, but not much. Not enough to offset the burnt toast, anyway.

Mouthfeel – This was thinner than I had hoped, not even medium-bodied, but I liked the bitter feeling in the cheeks.

Drinkability – This is more of a “sipping stout” than a party animal. It is very nice and made a terrific aperitif.

Comments – A big BA thumbs up to Rastacouere for sending me this Canadian East Coast gem. Makes me want to stand up and speak French.

From old, old notes… Seeing this on the top 100 forced me to get out the old notebook and play some catch up. Thanks owed to Autumnal Dave for giving me this. Oil like appearance, black and thick. Large creamy light brown head dissipates to pretty lace. Very clingy. Smells like coffee made twangy by apricot or some other light fruit and cocoa with that well know oatmeal bitterness. Quite an ominous feel and heaviness. Very dark and very bitter. Lots of raosted malt followed by oily hops in the finish. Oatmeal bitterness lingers. This is for sipping not downing despite the low abv. Very good.

Look (4.5/5) – Pours a very, very dark brown to black. I can’t really tell if it had go clarity or not because it was so dark. The head was good: it rose to about a finger on a gentle pour; it was mousse-textured and a mocha-khaki color; it fell very slowly to a cap that really lasted with some nice lacing.

Aroma (4/5) – The nose had a lot of malt going on. Given the color, I was surprised to detect bready notes. The main player was roasted malts which fell well shy of being harsh or acrid: notes of black malt, coffee, and chocolate. There was a good bit of sweetness: notes of dark caramel (almost like burnt marshmellow) and a bit of melanoidin flavor.

Taste (4.5/5) – Very similar to the aroma. There’s a light bready, almost grainy and nutty, character as a backbone for the brew (I think this is the oats at play). Dark, Roasted malts were, obviously, very prevalent: a lot more coffee and chocolate than black patent than for the aroma The sweetness was somewhat different character: there was still the caramel, but much less fruit in the character. The bitterness a great balance for the rich malts; no rea hop flavor.

Feel (5/5) – Full bodied and light carbonation. The oats give a really great, silky mouth-feel without being too oily.

Overall, this is probably the best Oatmeal Stout I’ve encountered. It does a particularly great job of balancing the bitterness and intensity of dark roasted malts with sweeter malts and an ideal addition of oats that plays well on the nutty, grainy character without overwhelming the other malts or making an oily mout-feel.

Can't see through it, and what's on top is a light brown foam that just won't leave. Love the smell - roasted barley, dark-ass malts, faint whiffs of burnt toasted toffee... niiiice.

Starts with a "Dragonslayer Junior" flavor - many of the same deep roasty black coffee and cocoa notes, but scaled back. A dark fruity (black cherries?) maltiness comes in mid sip that gives it a solid roundness. Dries out a bit in the finish, but that delectable roastiness with a very slight tang stays throughout. Wish there was a bit more of an oatmeal flavor/oiliness in this one, but it's almost nitpicking given the flavors that are there. medium chewy mouthfeel.

Absolutely caseworthy drinkability. An all day long stout, one of the best ones around IMO.

Chocolate,coffee,creamy oatmeal,smells like it sat in a cask,black as can be, taste is choclate oatmeal and malt,drier than I expected, body seemed highly charged, but still had that oatmeal slick mouthfeel , excellent in its class, I just like them a touch sweeter

This is a fantastic Oatmeal Stout! it's the wife's favorite beer and is definately in my top 5.

1. Dark-Chocolate Brown, definately not black, hold it up to light and you'll see. Staring at the glass, very little light gets through here, pretty characteristic of the class. Pours a fluffy, light brown head that sticks around for a bit, lacing is great and holds up throughout the entire drink. it's sitting infront of me right now, put a fork in the center of it and you cannot see it. very good appearance.

2. has a distinct roasted smell of mocha-oat mixed with faint blackstrap molasses coming in as well. very pleasing smell, not sweet, not bitter, just pretty much bang on!

3. absoulutely fantastic. i really do appreciate the craftsmenship in this product. the Mocha-Oatmeal flavors hit straight away, it's not bitter nor is it over powering with the chocolate flavors. like the smell, it's bang on, except better! you can let this one sit for a while and experiance a wonderful roasted taste as well. it is a bit dry at first, but that went away after a few sips. malt aftertaste is definately present.

4. for some reason i was expecting more. it's relatively thin, but there is still definately a body there, just not as much compared to some other oat-stouts i've tried. good regardless though. smooth though, with a tad bit of dry-tarty feel.

5. superb, i can enjoy this brew anytime and anywhere. it's overall very smooth and full of flavor that i find just amazing.

this is another fine product that i'd recommend to anyone to try out that enjoys this genre of beers.

Presentation: 11.5 oz brown twist, no description and no freshness date.

Appearance: Ink black with a healthy light brown lace.

Smell: Dark roasted black iced coffee with a slight burnt twang.

Taste: Crisp carbonation and mouth feel with a mild steely biting roasted bitterness that softens into an iced espresso flavour. Hops hide behind the roasted character, a meek silky oily sweetness from the oatmeal give a little to the taste buds. The roasted coffee like taste lingers on and on.

Notes: Quite robust and a little boisterous to the palate. Hmmm …. tastes like an oatmeal stout from the peek of the Micro-Brewery Revolution or at least a kick ass homebrew. Got to love this stuff … not many people have the balls to brew like this these days. Great stuff guys!

11.5 ounce bottle, twist off top. W/o Freshness/bottling info. Pours darkest shades of brown, near black, with light shining through the edge. Fluffy mocha head, leads to a tiny bubble film, medium collar and ample bit os lace and light sheeting on the glass. The nose here is roasted malts and some light coffee. More coffee on the tongue, along with darker grains. On the thin side body wise and quite dry on the lips. Hopped up, quite drinkable, ample coffee, dark grains. As a big fan of the style, I'd say this is well worth a try. $9.99 for a 4 (boo) pack at DeCiccio's in adsley, NY

Appearance: 1 inch thick head, dark brown

Smell: sweet toasted malt, molasses, and expresso

Taste: burnt malt, coffee, some light cream

Mouthfeel: medium body, dry, semi-sweet, smooth, with low carbonation

Drinkability: Compared to other oatmeal stouts I have tried this one is pretty average. It is inoffensive on the way down, but the aftertaste just did not agree with me. This one was a disappointment.

Thanks to my father for picking up this beer while he was in Halifax.

The beer pours a black color with a tan head. The aroma is awesome. I get a lot of chocolate and coffee notes, with some cream notes as well. The flavor is a chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and cream. Low bitterness. The beer is very drinkable and doesn't have any bitterness from the coffee or roasted malt. Medium to thick mouthfeel and low carbonation. There is a ton of flavor in this beer considering it is only 5 percent. It has been a while since I have tried it, but this beer reminds me a lot of the Portsmouth Oatmeal Stout. Outstanding beer.

On tap at the Winking Judge in Hamilton. Poured into a branded St. Ambroise nonic.

Deep brown, near-black, with a half-inch off-white head. Nice and creamy, superb retention and great sheets of lacing until the finish.

Nose is roasted coffee, dark chocolate, toasted oatmeal, caramel.

A terrific stout for a cold November evening. Rich in dark coffee flavor, but with a slightly sour oatmeal bitterness to counteract it. As the brew warmed a little, the caramel and cream flavors were given some presence, and the whole thing just came together. A great evening sipper.

Medium/light-bodied, light carbonation, very creamy - right on the mark for the style.

Great work by McAuslan. Although I've had this in bottles many times, the draught edition was excellent stuff. Another superb brew from Montreal - among Canada's best.

Pours black with a short but thick tan head. Oaty, malty, chocolate nose. The espresso saves itself for the taste. Bitter chocolate and coffee with a sweet creamiiness. Licorice, molasses, and a roasty dryness comes with the finish. A bit thin in the body for the style, but still a really good beer.

With aromas of toasted barley, chocolate malt, coffee, and caramel, topped by just a hint of tobacco, this oatmeal stout announces from the get-go that it's not out to play tiddlywinks.

On the tongue, the brew delivers an onslaught of black goodness, with huge and silky flavors sliding into every nook and cranny. Extremely well-balanced between sugary and near-burnt flavors, chocolate malts (and perhaps black malts) mix with caramelized brown sugars and molasses, hints of dark maple syrup, milk chocolate, coffee and tobacco. Hops are medium-light, but still noticeable in the background as a slight bitter fuzz. The oatmeal provides the brew with a silkiness that nicely plays off of the heavy mouthfeel. The aftertaste is mostly comprised of chocolate malts, and lasts for quite some time.

Overall, this is an excellent oatmeal stout, and has obviously been made lovingly and lavishly. One note: while excellent in a bottle, this is even better on tap, especially when purchased in Quebec, where it's pretty much guaranteed to be fresh from the brewer.

Pours a nice black color with a big creamy light brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, oatmeal, and molasses. Quite sweet smelling, but doesn't taste as sweet as it smells. Big roasted malt flavor with espresso and some dark chocolate. A fairly bitter finish. Medium bodied, good mouthfeel. An excellent beer.

Inky black and opaque with a light brown colored thick two inches of foam. A stiff hard cap sits on top with several large dimples.

No aroma?

Flavor is initially faint and light, but quickly morphs to burnt espresso, tangy raisin, licorice and coffee grounds. Burnt coffee lingers. Tastes like a pot of coffee that's been left on the burner all day.

Even mouthfeel, not overly carbed.

Am I missing something? Not following why this is so highly rated.

First time I came across this beer was at C'est What in Toronto, CA and needless to say I feel in love with the draft version there. That was about 4-5 years ago many stouts later and this time it's a bottle sample. Appearance is black it absorbs all visible light forms a dark tan thicket of head, with great retention. After dwindling slowly it forms a tight collar of lace on the rim of my Gulden Draak chalice, and with each sip fine speckled lacing is left behind. Aroma tartness with mild metallic notes, and dark powdered chocolate really dry and not much like I remember the draft softness of the oatmeal additions to come across in the nose. Definitely some cereal grains outside of patent black roasted malts the oatmeal is kicking just subdued by the dark roasts no real hop aromatics here. Somewhat tart and lactic with mild oxidation noted no date on the bottle here, but again not what I recall in my beer memory dark roasts with bitterness something practically burnt with these strange tart notes surfing around no real complex fruitiness just a mild funk brewing. Mild chocolate and coffee more so just dark baker's chocolate with a powdered cocoa finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied somewhat creamy textured carbonation is mellow and smooth no complaints in this department, finishes exuberantly dry. Drinkability is okay I'm a fan of the draft version I won't give up on the beauty of this beer that I recall on tap in Toronto, but the bottled version was pale in comparison.

undated 11.5 oz bottle served in a Highland Brewing pint glass.

Very dark mahogany coming out of the bottle. In the glass it is essentially black and opaque; no light coming thru even whenbacklit. The relatively dark tan head has good duration and leaves fine lacing.

Both dark roasted malts and some spicy hops appear in the aroma. Hints of coffee
Some alcohol esters appear with warming.

T - Excellent flavor balance. A rich roasted malt flavor with some mild hop spiciness. Hints of coffee, especially in the finish.

M: near perfect in terms of body, carbonation and other tactile qualities.

O - Bought as a single bottle on a whim with no particular expectations, I lucked out and stumbled upon one of the very best, if not the best, oatmeal stout I've ever encountered. Almost beyond criticism, this stout lacks only a bit of depth and complexity, although it certainly has a good bit of both. Highly recommended!

Nitro-tap from Leon's in Atlanta.

Pours one shade lighter than black with a cascading two-finger light brown head. The head slowly recedes into a thin pancake on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of a combination of milk and dark chocolate with a good bit of roasted malts lingering in the background. All smells are muted.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Mild roasted malt flavors up front are joined by dark chocolate flavors midway through the sip that cary on through a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a smooth thickness with light carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this was a solid beer thought I'm not sure that it benefitted a whole lot from the nitro-pour. Still, it's worth a shot, nitro or not.

pours opaque black with big frothy tan head.
smells of black licorice roasted malt and some mocha.
tastes is the same, smooth licorice in the front, followed by creamy mocha and slight charcoal finish.
mouth feel is amazing, perfect carbonation and smooth, rich,velvety consistancy. ( even better on tap since its nitro!)
drinkability is amazing since its not super high alcohol content,
just super high in flavour.

IMO, this is one of the best on the planet.

A- This beer pours a thick black inky body that is to dense to see through and a dark brown cream head sits on top. The head last and last and starts to push big bubbles up to the surface making it rocky.

S- I can smell this beer even during the pour but the aroma is even more complex on closer inspection. The smell of dark black earthy malt has a slight sour note to it with some soft green bitter hops in the finish. As it warms there is a dark molasses and faint tar note to the malt.

T- The dark black roasted malt and grain have a very faint sweetness to them but the taste is mostly neutral. The malt has a nice earthiness that is a bit sour with a faint tar note to give it more depth. The finish has a nice coffee roasted quality with a very faint hop bitterness. The bitterness of the malt hangs on the tongue and balances the slight sweetness at the beginning.

M- This beer has a medium-full body with a creamy texture and a slight slippery quality in the finish.

D-I have had many oatmeal stouts and not very many are good. This one is great. There is good complexity to the malt flavors and the bitterness of the malt at the finish balances with the slight sweetness of the malt at the beginning. The oatmeal qualities really compliment the beer without dominating the beer making it too funky.

I think I got this in my Black Booty box from Mikesgroove, though I may be wrong.... It has been in the back of my fridge for a bit. Whoever sent this, thanks a bunch ^^;;

12oz. brown bottle, poured into a tulip. 3/19/09

A: Pours completely opaque black, no lighting. 1 1/2 fingers of tight mocha head forms and holds well. Some decent lacing throughout.

S: The typical light stout burnt malts, a sweet cola sense, light molasses and chocolate. The oats and grains add a nice breakfast style touch to things.

T/M: Much drier and chalkier than I expected. More of the stout tastes as mentioned in the nose but the dry and chalkiness of everything is getting in the way. It actually lingers and intensifies after the swallow. The oats add a very nice creaminess to the body but is overtaken again.

D: Not a bad brew but feels unbalanced to me. I love me some Oatmeal stouts but I don't think this is the one for me. 5% is nice.

Jet black with a sausage finger of creamy tan head.

A fantastic creamy smell, dark roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Slightly bitter.

Like an iced coffee with chocolate. Creamy and malty. The mouthfeel is great, very smooth, little carbonation.

Going back for more.
