I love oatmeal stout. Fact. However it's not easy coming across them in Australia (which is typically more of a hot climate Lager country). So when I do come across one, like this fine looking St-Ambroise, I throw wads of cash at the bottleshop attendant and shout at them "TAKE MY MONEY!"... not really but you get the idea. Why are Oatmeal Stouts so good? You ask rhetorically. I'll tell you (to hell with rhetorical question rules dammit): the oats in Oatmeal Stouts impart a full and silky smooth body to the Stout, which is a beer style that greatly benefits from being as smooth as Barry White's vocals, awwww yeah.
Poured from a 341ml bottle into a nonic pint.
A: This brew presents well with a cloudy (top tip: how can I tell? Shine a flash-light through it) cola body and a russet brown 1cm head that retains well. Looks very tasty!
S: Aroma is rich with caramel malt, espresso and dark chocolate but not much else. Do you need anything more? No, then shut up.
T: Roasted, almost burnt, coffee hits straight away, the caramel malt combines with hops to give an earthy taste, and there is some lingering smoke in the finish. There is a hint of chocolate however this is definitely a more coffee flavoured affair... and the richness of the body, damn! I couldn't wait for the "M" to describe it, I'm breaking all the rules today!
M: Full bodied and rich, rich as Nazis (guess that reference) with tight packed carbonation giving this a Teddy Pendergrass out of Marvin Gaye smoothness rating [that's my Trademarked smoothness rating system].
D: I'm well impressed by this Oatmeal Stout, it plants a flag on your taste-buds and claims your tongue for mother St-Ambroise. If there is one small chink in the armour of this mighty brew it may be a teensy tiny bit lacking in complexity, but the mouthfeel hits it out of the ball-park. It will be hard for me to find another Oatmeal Stout lest one as smooth as this. I have officially been seduced by this brew.
Food match: Immediately pastries such as croissants, chocolatine and brioche springs to mind, this is after all like drinking a thick rich cup of coffee... I wonder if I can get away with drinking this beer for breakfast? Aside from this it would pair with Æbleflæsk or any pumpernickel (rugbrød) based dish... if you hate pumpernickel too bad.

Unbelievably good beer.
Color is an extremely dark brown with moderately brown, thick foam.
Smell is good, although nothing totally spectacular. Notes of chocolate, oatmeal, and malt.
Taste is outstanding. Medium roasted malt, moderately strong oatmeal, chocolate, coffee, and a hint of hops. Mouthfeel is very full bodied.
Overall an excellent beer.

on-tap at accords bistro in montreal
a: truly pitch black with one finger of tan, nitro-y head
s: deep roasty notes, coffee, slight chocolate. hints of oats and vanilla which is what i admire most about this beer
t: follows the nose. big roasted malt flavour, bitter black coffee, bitter dark chocolate, hints of dark fruits, namely prunes. very dry finish
m: light body, creamy, close to no carbonation
o: so so good, loaded with flavour for 5% abv. one of my favourites. a bit better from the bottle in my opinion. please try this beer
