I bought three bottles of this in Gatineau when it was first released late last fall. One, I gave to my brother. The second, I put away for a prolonged rest. The third, I drank today, as a celebration of being done with the GRE test.
A thick pour into my tulip glass yielded an opaque black body with a beautiful mocha head that seemed to last through the entire beer. Gorgeous.
The everlasting head reveals aromas of coffee, vanilla, and oakey spice. Not quite as powerful as I'd hoped but very nice.
While the aroma shows promise, the taste is where this beer really shined. Plenty of coffee and roast combined with dark chocolate, vanilla, and moderate hop bitterness. The bourbon flavours really come through in the aftertaste, making for a complete tasting experience.
While carbonation is slightly more aggressive than I would normally desire, the thick, creamy feel of the beer make it a great sipper.
Overall this is a fantastic brew. I had high expectations for a McAuslan Imperial Stout, and they were more definitely met. I'm very curious to see how this one ages over the next couple years.
