Our master brewer uses the word “intense” to describe St. Ambroise Double India Pale Ale. If you like hops and you like malt, you will love the citrous aromas and the full-bodied taste of this unfiltered St.Ambroise Double India Pale Ale.

Pours a dark shade of gold with a large dense head. Hoppy and yeasty on the smell. Boozy and hoppy on the taste. Malty background but the alcohol content overpowers all other tastes. Nicely carbonated. Overall a decent strong beer.

Way to bitter for my taste. The bitterness overpowers all the other flavor.

2,100th review! Best before March 27, 2021. Canning date appears to be November 27, 2020.

Appearance - Most clear amber colored beer with three fingers of dense but fluffy white head. Incredible staying power and forms and odd cap of built up foam on top. This usually only happens with Belgians (think Duvel) and fine German hefeweizens (Weihenstephaner). Some bubbling in the beer and huge swaths of lacing everywhere.

Smell - Perfumey, piney, floral and with lots of malts, definitely a stronger relative to the Pale Ale, there are similarities in the aromatics.

Taste - Heavy handed with the hops, plenty of bitterness, leafy and weedy, some perfumey aspects and the booze is present although reasonably well hidden. Some piney elements but muted. Definitely old-school.

Mouthfeel - Medium-heavy bodied, creamy, carbonation is on point and slightly astringent on the tongue.

Overall - Not a brew for everyone, but I rather enjoyed this rendition of a DIPA before New England Style was even a thing and back when it was Hop Wars for the biggest baddest IBU's. Not a great beer, but very good and definitely a welcome change from what the balance of the local markets are doing.

A little heavy handed with the hops. Even if named Double IPA. Not my favourite St-Ambroise beer.

Well...where to start.
A 16 oz can was $2.79 + dep + tax. . So, relatively cheap for Quebec.
Canned on & BB dates BOTH clearly stamped...so that's impressive.
....the interpolated 35-day recommended shelf life was both surprisingly short, and uniquely transparent.

Pours cloudy copper ,impressive creamy head. Numerous, noticeably large, "plant wood" chunks sink directly to the bottom...never seen that before.
Taste is not nuanced. The hops are all used for bittering...no flavouring of aroma present at all.
This is like being hit with a hop cudgel....no subtlety or style. You like hops? Here!
But I will give some credit.....for 8% abv, not very astringent tasting.

Cheap yes...but not great IPA value for money.

Poured into a large wine glass!
Slightly hazy gold with a good rocky head of foam which eventually settles to about one inch.
Rich aroma of citrus hops and malt, Wonderful!!
A little heavy-handed on the American hops I would have preferred a bit more malt in the background but not horrible.
Good carbonation and a dry finish
It could use more malt for a better body but overall a very good effort!
I'd love to find this on tap!!

A: Poured from the 500mL can into a tulip glass (as recommended on the can). The beer is a slightly hazy pure orange color with a foamy off-white head with a good amount of lacing.

S: Very citrusy with grapefruit rind the most dominant note along with a little bit of balancing malt and a bit of spice.

T: Heavy bitterness with sap, pine, lemon and a good amount of alcohol. Some citrus rind in there, but quite unbalanced with not much malt to speak of.

F: Good amount of carbonation and drying in the finish.

Overall: This is a very bitter DIPA, which is good if you are into that, and improves as you get used to it more, but it could use a bit more balance to make it a really good beer.

Poured into a tulip. Pours golden clear with very good collar. Nose is malt with slight fruit - would have liked a bit more complexity here. Strong bitter here and as much as I enjoy strong ABU, this one needs a bit of a buffer. Aftertaste equally strong and lingering. This one actually gets better the longer it decants and ended smoother after a few minutes....or perhaps it was the kick in of the 8% volume that made me feel better. :) A decent enough find.

Had a pint of this at the brewery, which I made sure to get to during a trip through Montreal primarily because I enjoy their Oatmeal stout. DIPAs are a style preference as well so I was looking forward to trying this. In the end I was disappointed as this was more malty than anything up front with some fruity (melon rind) & a touch of floral. A little piney bitterness at the end of each sip but not nearly as much hop character as I'd hoped.

Pours lightly hazy bronze with a foamy off white head that lasts a good while. Leafy, herbal hops, fruity yeast esters and butterscotch malts in the nose. Also a bit of booziness. The taste is of woody, herbal hops, fusel alcohol, fruity, melony yeast esters and doughy, toasty malts. Moderate carbonation and a medium to full body. The finish is sweetish and boozy.

This is a mediocre DIPA at best. Very boozy and lacking in hops. Avoid.
