On tap at Inland Empire Brewing Company in Riverside, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, orange zest, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with orange liqueur flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with a boozy orange presence, especially in the flavor.

This is one of the most out of balance beers I've ever tasted.

Appearance is a brown/orange that looks a lot like very old wine - not terrible just not good.

Nose is overwhelmingly sweet and almost sticky. There is some carmel, toffee and malt and candied orange peel. But, the foregoing descriptors sound better than the actuality. The huge sweet esters hit you over the head.

Mouthfeel is almost impossible to evaluate since the flavor profile and taste is overwhelming...overwelmingly out of balance and almost undrinkable in my opinion.

The flavors are giant bitter/sweet oranges; big malt; big pine resin; burned black toast; charcoal marshmellows and with a finish that is very large dull bitter pine.

However, while it all sounds like it could be nice, the is totally UNintegrated and out of balance. Each flavor is identifiable and stands out, none to be integrated with the other. I can't imagine what you'd eat with this beer and I can't imagine why one would drink it on its own.

I respect and frequently look to womencantsail and others for their reviews and recommendations. Womencantsail and I usually agree, for the most part. This time, "A," we really don't agree.

Just my opinion. Let's just say...."not my style."

On-tap at Eureka!Burger Claremont

A: The beer pours a hazy golden orange color with a finger of white head.

S: Quite a sweet nose on this beer. Big time malt/caramel along with toffee and sweet fruits (for good measure). A bit of citrus, mostly grapefruit, with a touch of grass. In case it wasn't sweet enough, there's a bit of brown sugar.

T: Not surprisingly, the flavor is sweet, too! There's a distinct flavor of fruit punch. It's very sweet/sugary with a bit of fruit character (pineapple and grapefruit). There is minimal bitterness and even more sweetness from toffee, caramel, and brown sugar.

M: The body is medium, surprisingly not syrupy, with medium carbonation.

O: I wanted this to be good as it's always nice to have a good, local IPA, but I just can't say it is.

I'm reviewing this as an American Strong Ale as it's clearly not any kind of IPA. You could call it a Fruit Beer, but it's just so strong.

Pours a dark amber red in the Duvel Tulip. Reminds of dark wildflower or avocado honey. Which is exactly what it tastes like. Big scent of orange which follows through in the flavor. Intriguing intense fruitiness with a sweetness that doesn't quit. The orange peel feels hot on the lips like an English marmalade. The bitterness is augmented by some sort of hoppy flavor. I think the word "unique" could actually be applied to this.

The honey is making me dizzy. After a brief seduction this gets kind of icky. Maybe the attractive robust babe who turns out to have mental health issues? From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the Olive Tree in San Diego. They call it 11% on the label.

Ordered at the same time as another ipa, this one looked just as, if not more impressive than the other. That would be the last time that this beer would be better than any other for my week spent in LV/SD/OC.

Aroma was horribly lacking any hop aroma, it was all bittersweet malt aroma for me. Its a bunch of English adjectives that came out, woody, toffee, mild, brown malt???, but definitely not dry hopping.

Taste, eh, this is plenty bitter, but its kind of an obliterating bitter that doesn't yield itself to much in the way of flavors, much less ones you've come to love and expect from southern california breweries. Just not impressed at all here, nothing really adds up to well. Disjointed. And let's not forget about that alcohol burn to top it off and insult your taste buds a little more. Had just this, imperial red malty ale smell and taste that never jived for me, and doesn't sound like something up my alley anyways when I describe it.

It wasn't the worst beer in the world, sure one of its biggest problems that night was that I was drinking tons of other world class brews at a world class location, but for me, it was below average in almost every way, just a coppery bitterness with alcohol that doesn't give me any reason to ever recommend.

Bottle t Piraat Tulip
22oz

No bottle date, although gentleman told me was recieved last week.

Purchased at Euclid liquors, Upland, CA $8.99

App- This has to be the darkest DIPA, I have ever seen. Almost blood red in the glass with a good density behind it. Like the head. A nice two finger slow to recede. Medium lines of cling and lace.

Smell- A bit one dimensional. You see the pictures on the label and thats what they go for. Honey, Orange and Hoppy. You can pick each one out. Booze at 11% is semi hidden as well. A bit creamy on the nose.

Taste- I am still not sure if I am rating to low or not based on my bias of honey. However, quite thick flavors abound on this one. Its got a large orange zest flavor and the sweetness of the honey comes in. Lastly, the hops with only a touch of creaminess and bitter. Much like the nose, each flavor is easy to pick out. Not much by way of layering or complexity.

Mouth- A full medium body with a thick medium carbonation. Creamy on the finish with a small bitter flavor and a large honey and orange residual flavor.

Drink- It was flavorful. Had some nice qualities, but just didnt do it for me. Glad this was finally put into bottles and I didnt waste the $$ on a growler. Dont know I could drink more than 22oz.

On tap at The Bruery Annaversary party. 4oz taster poured into a 5oz taster glass. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a semi clear dark amber color. Decent off white head lasted a long time. Nice lacing.

Aroma is malty sweet. Very citric. Some honey aromas too.

Taste is too sweet but not too bad. Slight caramel. Nice citrus hip flavor. Nice hop bite too.

Mouthfeel is a bit too malty but not too bad. Good carbonation.

Overall a tasty beer but because of the maltiness I can't imagine havin too much of this. Try it if you see it.

A - Light orange / amber like - dark enough to show well in the evening at the tap tasting table - nice white off white head that leaves some lacing.

S - Orange with sweetness and maltiness and some hop citrus notes that compliment the orange zest well

T- Malty initial taste with orange and citrus with a sweetness that is enjoyable. Little bite from all the citrus and malt smoothness. Very nice.

M - Light carbonation, not heavy at all, very smooth, nice citrus linger with balance from the malt.

D - Easy to see why this is the favorite at the brewery. Very popular and very easy to drink. Their prime beer - will be very nice to drink regularly as summer approaches. Recommended...

Apperance: Great head, decent lacing. Eggshell color on head. Hazy golden apricot in color.

Nose: The juciest part of an orange. Honey, little hops and malt.

Taste: Very syrupy and malty with little carbonation. Well balanced! Honey and citrus, little bit of orange peel.

Notes: satisfied, this is a nice beer. If you can get your hands on it, get some for sure.

Bought a growler of this at the brewery, and had a wonderful Saturday night with the family. Very interesting double IPA with orange zest.

Pours a deep amber color that reminds me of darker styles, yet is still within the IPA hue. Decent white head when poured on tap. Growler pours a little less as expected. Nice lacing.

Smells like oranges and hops, huge citrus component, and also big malt smell. Smell could be the best part of this beer, its wonderful.

The malt presence is more forward than it smells, nice balanced bready malty taste with loads of pine, grapefruit, orange blossom, some honey i think.
Just a unique recipe.

mouthfeel and drinkability is right up there with the taste. Thick for its 10.5% abv and yet still drinkable. Killed a 2 liter growler between 3 people easily over 2.5 hours.
