They serve brews that other breweries are not putting out in the Inland Empire. The Sour is refreshing and a good change of pace, it's clean, crisp and easily drinkable. Imagine taking a hand full of warhead candy or sour patch kids and shoving them into your mouth all at once. That is what Inland Empire Breweries Sour reminds me of.

On-tap at The Million Dollar Sandwich (Hollingshead, for the uninitiated)

A: The pour on this one is a light amber color with a rocky white head.

S: Damp oak and slight earthy and musty funk notes. Lightly lemony with notes of sawdust and a light malt note on the back end. A hint of watermelon rind and dust.

T: The sawdust character is certainly intense on the palate. A light lemon sourness as well as a hint of watermelon rind (which gives a slight bitterness). Lightly funky with a fair amount of must, leather, and grass.

M: The body is light to medium with a medium carbonation.

O: This was very homebrew-like in the sense that the beer sort of seems like the brewer didn't really know what they were doing or didn't mean for it to be sour.

On tap at Inland Empire Brewing Company

A: This looks almost identical to their blonde but with a bit more haze. I spoke with the brewmaster and he noted that this was the last keg filled from the batch so it was more acetyl and imparted some cloudiness from the degs. No lacing, good carbonation

S: Lemongrass notes, tart apple, white grapes, and a vinegar waft.

T: The initial taste has a grapefruit sweetness that is immediately overcome by tart vinegar and sour pear notes. The dryness is present with a lingering sour tangelo sort of taste. I tried another keg of this and I feel that the "final keg" was far superior in tartness and finish. It is reminiscient of a crisper temptation, were it possible, this could benefit from aging.

M: Very thin and almost identical to the blonde but with an acerbic dryness to it. The lacto/pedio/brett punch raids the gumline and makes me want more. It isn't particularly original in execution but it is well done without an overload on funk. The fruity notes are excellent when it warms up a bit.

O: I feel that this is an excellent first go at this style and they could produce some amazing Flanders etc. if they wanted to. It is a shame that they didn't bottle this because I have had plenty of worse sours and paid much more.

Narrative: The abandoned apple orchard swayed lithely in the breeze as the fetid tart apples fell unharvested upon the ground. At the center of this dilapidated agriculture trainwreck was old man Parsons, local curmudgeon of the area. He bit his upper lip and watched from the roadside the children casting stones against his orchard, simmering his malevolence. The bank tried to take this property and failed, which served to make petulant old man Parsons filled even further with rancor. One child picked up one of the neclected apples and bit it insouciantly, his lips puckering not unlike a Gushers commercial. Mr. Parsons nodded his head and kept his austere bitterness to himself, not to be shared.

Sampled 6/17/2011 on tap at Eureka Burger in Claremont. The board only said IE Sour. If someone finds a better name please submit an update.

Pours hazy yellow, low head, no lacing, or retention.

Aroma is woody, sawdust, lemon, and a bit of funk/sock.

Flavor is heavy on the sawdust. pperez38 immediately said it reminded him of the lumber aisle at Home Depot. There is a decent amount of lemon flavor, some fruitiness, some gym sock, and a hint of vinegar.

Body is very thin and watery.

Not bad for what I assume is a first try at the style.
