Sampled 8/20/2011 at the brewery.

This is the Pro-am beer for 2011. I asked to make sure that it is not the same as Black Dahlia from last year. They say it's a different recipe from a different brewer and it's just a coincidence that they are both BSDA's with anise.

Pours dark brown/red, lightly hazy, creamy off-white head, sticky lacing, decent retention.

Aroma is very involved. Anise, plum, caramel, booze, and whiskey.

Flavor is cola, lots and lots of anise, some whiskey, bread, caramel, lots of carbonation, and medium bitterness.

Body is too heavy.

On tap at Inland Empire Brewing Company in Riverside, CA.

The board listed this batch at 12% ABV.

Aged in Heaven Hill barrels.

Pours a clear super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, brown sugar, toffee, and dark fruits. Taste is much the same with a brandy and port flavors on the finish. There is an alcohol kick on the palate after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some great fruity flavors but I am getting no bourbon presence in the aroma or flavor. (714 characters)
