This Belgian-style dark ale is the culmination of central and western European malts, Noble hops, candy sugar and a traditional Trappist yeast. Notes of dried fruit, cinnamon and vanilla make DNR a very complex experience to be enjoyed in moderation.

I’m writing this for Coop in hopes they stop ruining their brand by selling this in grocery stores and gas stations. I’m a brewer, and I am not alone in this conclusion. I had this beer when it launched at select bars. It was pretty good for the style. Unfortunately this beer does not hold up to the strain of grocery stores and gas stations where I assume above room temp storage is taking place before it goes into the cooler. I will not buy this beer in those places if older than a month, and even then it tastes like it’s already turning sour. Sour in a bad way ! It’s down right disgusting at 2 months old which means only one thing, bad storage. The alcohol is high enough, and I imagine it has a tiny bit of hops. In normal room temperature storage it shouldn’t go bad this quick. So it’s got to be excess heat. You need to pull this beer entirety or reimagine it for bad storage. I highly suggest bumping the alcohol up a tiny bit more, and adding more hops that aren’t too aggressive. You might be pushing out of the style a bit, but it’s better than losing customers and not gaining new ones. A kid today saw me checking the date on your beer to decide if I wanted it, and we laughed about how he learned that lesson too. It’s not a fluke, and I’m not the only one.

First beer on tap at Social Capital in OKC. Dark brown color, pretty boozy but very tasty. Can’t pass this one up.

Look: orange/red with a white head

Aroma: sugar, booziness

Taste: The flavor is dried plum, it's sweet, burned sugar, cinnamon, maybe vanilla, and significant booziness. It has a lot of flavor but I

thought it was a bit too sweet and boozy.

Body/Overall: medium body, decent, good enough but not top notch

I kinda struggled with how to review this beer. I didn't like it at first taste but it has slowly grown on me as I have slurped it down. I can't say it is an awesome example of the this style, but I will give it credit for being pretty good. I will rank it slightly below what the average review is and just encourage everyone to give it a try themselves.

Poured from a can into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange-red color with a one finger head of white foam. The head fades very fast leaving a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of a slightly sour vinegar smell mixed with some dark fruit aromas of cherry and plum. Along with these aromas comes a nice smell of yeast and cinnamon and a bit of nutmeg and coriander spice. There is a touch of boozy alcohol as well, giving a rather sour and strong Belgium aroma overall.
Taste – In opposition to what one would expected the nose, the taste begins with almost no sour at all but has a nice dark fruit taste of plum, raisin, and cherry. Along with these flavors comes some bready tastes as well as a bit of yeasty and spice flavors of coriander and clove. As the taste advances the yeast and spice seem to lessen all while the sweet gets stronger, with the fruit being joined by some candied sugar tastes. There is also a bit of a boozy alcohol taste that develops more toward the end of the taste. This taste nicely compliments the other flavors in the brew and creates a sweet and fruity, but dangerously easy drinking and robust taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium to slightly thicker in chewiness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. The feel is rather nice for the style and abv and makes for a nice slow sipper with lots of flavor and a nice warming style.
Overall – this is a rather nice quad style brew overall. Very flavorful and big with a nice balance. The only downside is the sour smell, but this does not meld into the taste and feel at all. Overall quite tasty and a good alternative to Chimay Blue (while not quite as good… It is almost half the cost and for the price point does suburb!!)

On tap at a local restaurant:

Look: beautiful, hazy, dark copper color, but that’s the most positive thing I have to say about it. No head, no lacing.

Aroma is weak to me and mostly booze and sugar. It smells like a wine I would not enjoy.

Taste is difficult to describe but I will try. Decent balance of vanilla, cinnamon, and fruits, but the booze and sugar are overpowering.

Feel: body is thick. Carbonation is almost nonexistent. Doesn’t leave much of an aftertaste but it leaves my tongue with a cottonmouth feeling I get if I were to forget to brush my teeth in the morning.

Overall: by all standards and in all fairness, nowhere near the worst beer I have ever had. That said, it was by far the worst beer I have had from Coop. It really resembles a cheap wine more than a fine dark ale. Not worth the price paid ($6.50 for a 10 ounce draught).

I was hoping for a lot with this beer. I am a fan of most of Coop's beers. I was disappointed. Maybe I just don't understand this beer, or it is not in my taste spectrum. Sweet, tastes of alcohol, and seems more like a bad wine than a beer. Other reviewers seem to like it. I cannot recommend, and I don't have a plan to drink the last 3 cans from the 4 pack. I would recommend any (every) other beer from Coop before this.

Received from @jdell15 in NBS BIF #9. Reviewed 8/11/19. Thanks Jacob!
“16:54” built from dots on bottom of can; the rest is illegible. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Gold, clear.
Body – Gold, murky. When held to the light, translucent.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, medium density, short duration leaving a three mm crown and a large center island for a cap.
Lacing – None – not unexpected at this level of alcohol.
Aroma – 4 – Sweet dark fruits, lasts.
Flavor – 4 - Begins sweet with a golden raisin/apricot sort of flavor which ends slightly sour. No hops. No alcohol flavor or aroma (10% ABV), no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Full, bordering on syrupy, lively (approaching fizzy) carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4 – This is actually quite tasty with the aroma/taste/palate all complementing one another and with the three exceeding expectations originating from the appearance. A decent brew which, IMHO, deserves a higher rating.
