Style | ABV
Belgian Strong Dark Ale |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This Belgian-style dark ale is the culmination of central and western European malts, Noble hops, candy sugar and a traditional Trappist yeast. Notes of dried fruit, cinnamon and vanilla make DNR a very complex experience to be enjoyed in moderation.

C

750ml into a tulip. Pours a ruddy deep amber, mid tone between a strong dark and pale. Towering off white head with an encouraging pour slow to recede leaving nice trailing lace, looks like a dairy product.

Aroma is quintessential belgian, wonderful complexity, spicy floral upbeat.

Flavor does not share the complexity, bland within a narrow range. Aftertaste is fully phenolic with a hint of zinc, not a strength, ends with a minor rough bitter. While not hot, the alcohol is pronounced. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a ruby red/amber with just a hint of off white head that goes away immediately.

Smell: Sweet and malty with some alcohol and fruity notes. The malt has a touch of caramel smell to it.

Taste: Right off the bat I thought this tasted more like a glass of wine than a beer. The alcohol and fruity notes combine with a mild bitterness and remind me of a red. There is some Belgian yeast spice in the mix as well, but the fruity and slightly sweet notes win.

Mouthfeel: The body is just on the thick side of medium with hardly any carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I'm not sure what the style of this should be, but it's not very pale and tastes like wine. Quite weird.

New on tap at Louies Brookhaven Norman
Second time drinking DNR, first was may 2009.

Presented with a two finger white head.
Deep copper color with appropriately low carbonation. Aroma of fruit, especially apples, and alcohol are overly dominate. Taste brings forward the taste of the apples, tangerines, and slight tart pineapple. Slow sipper. I would recommend the other coop styles, but i would gladly pass on this again.

Appearance- appealing caramel color, one finger of head

Taste- a little strong for my pallet, I paired it up with steak and wasn't a fan. Tasted more like wine, could defiantly taste the alcohol

Mouthfeel- it is a thicker chewy feel but very pleasing

Overall- solid beer but would only stick with one, the alcohol content could sneak up on people fast. Not one of my favorites but would have again.

Pours from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter.

This has a hazy apple cider color; there is an amber tint to a caramel colored beer. A fast-fading off-white head leave just a ring around the edge of the glass.

The aroma is apple cider, caramel, ethyl alcohol, and vanilla.

The flavor is fairly harsh. Apple cider, autumn spices, banana, clove, and Belgian yeast. The finish is funky and off-putting, with a vinegar and slimy bitterness.

The body is medium, with a bubbly creamy carbonation, a strong booziness, and some strange oily and sticky sensations.

Overall this is not very good.

Bottle from coldmeat23. Served in a BFM chalice.

A - White foam settles to a thin collar, near-complete cap, and minimal lace. Slightly hazed amber body.

S - Surprisingly little Belgian character. Mostly sweet caramel malts, toasted grains, vanilla, and some mild fruity notes. Surprisingly little alcohol for the listed 10%.

T - Taste is a bit heaver on the toasted grains, with only mid-level sweetness. Think there must be some pilsner malt in here, as there's a touch of buttered biscuit. Not much in the way Belgian character, and the hops seems to have faded away.

M - Smooth, chewy, and sticky body, pleasant carbonation, and a touch of mild warming alcohol.

D - Really surprised this was 10%. However, the well-hidden alcohol is the best part of this beer as there's not much going on with the Belgian yeast flavors. Easy way to get drunk I suppose, but not particularly memorable.

Bottle from midtown.
Pours a ruby color with about a finger of head... decent lacing...
Nose is a bit of hoppy dog food... hints of banana and coriander.
Taste is strong banana, followed by a slight plastic flavor and a sweetness to cover the abv. There are a lot of artificial flavors going on here... I can't support it wholly.
Mouthfeel is great, medium as it should be.
