Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Redrover on 10-01-2009

A strong German malt background and a slight note of bittering hops from Central Bavaria give this easy drinking lager its signature character. This is a true Marzen, brewed in the spring and conditioned for months to build a smooth and refreshing Oktoberfest that upholds the German tradition of well-crafted lagers as well as COOP’s signature style and independence.

I had this on tap at Tap Werks Ale House. I was glad to see them carrying this local product. It was served in a standard pint glass.

The beer is a hazy orange with an off-white head.

It had a fresh aroma of grains and a bit of spice.

It is very smooth with low carbonation. It has a taste of malts, caramel and light hopping. Sweet but not unbalanced. It was a tad of mineral taste late.

I thought this was an easy drinker and it went very well with my food. (472 characters)

Served in a standard pint glass.

Slightly hazy copper/amber colored brew with 1 finger of white head that recedes to a ring around the edges of the glass.

The aroma is toasty and bready Munich-type malts with a touch of hop spice.

The taste is subtle spicy noble-type hops and lightly sweet caramel malt on top of a solid toasty Munich/Vienna malt base.

Medium bodied and lightly carbonated, it sits a little heavy in the mouth. Well-balanced and easy to drink like this style should be. A solid offering from Coop.

***

I revisited this beer again in 2010 and found it to be on the sweet side, even for the style. Still pleasant, but either a drier finish or more hop bitterness would have made it better in my opinion. The caramel character seemed more pronounced at the expense of the warm toastiness I prefer in this style. It got a little tiresome and cloying after a half a pint. (891 characters)
