American Double / Imperial Stout |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
This imperial recipe begins with a big, rich stout packed with chocolate and coffee malts as well as oatmeal, and ends after a very generous hop addition. A portion of the brew was then aged in Templeton Rye whiskey barrels and the remainder was aged in our cellar. Before sending out the 2010 vintage, the two were blended for the perfect winter warmer.

Got this one from Doodler a while back. Thanks again man!

From a 75cl bottle into a snifter
Vintage: 2012
IBU: 65
Bottle 270 of 612
Spent 5 months in oak barrels

APPEARANCE: Dark brown / black pour yields a 1+ finger, medium body, creamy, tan head with good retention. Black body with slightly higher levels of carbonation. Head slowly fades to a slight foam cap. A ring remains but leaves no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Lots of oak for sure, with vanilla and milk chocolate as well. Some roast, caramel and dark chocolate notes with touches of coconut from the barrels. Very nice and enticing.

TASTE: Lots of oak again, vanilla, milk chocolate and touches of coconut through the middle into the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of oak, coconut, bitter dark chocolate, some roasted notes and caramel sweetness. Very flavorful and well balanced. Oak is well measured at this point and everything blends together really nicely. Excellent.

PALATE: Medium-full body with medium levels of carbonation. Enough weight and creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly sticky. Nicely creamy and smooth for sure. A touch of heat lingers. Really good feel. Full and creamy smooth with a good measure of heat.

OVERALL: Lots of good stuff about this one. Well balanced, flavorful, complex, with a good look and feel to boot. This one only gets average scores in the style from most reviewers, but I'd put this one up in the top of its class. Perhaps the extra couple years in the bottle is what has turned this one into the gem that it is. Thanks again Doodler!

Unmarked bottle that appears to be this brew from trader.

A: pretty standard BA RIS, but you can see through this one a bit more.

S: Oak Bourbon forward, nutty RIS background

T: At first this reminded me of an 06 BCBS, but then I realized that there is more oak nuttiness to this brew. Definitely more than I expected. Great brew.

M: This for its style

O: I was pleasantly surprised by this brew. I have not had a BA Stout with this much Oak and nuttiness to it. Nuts

2010 vintage from coldmeat23. Bottle #585/612. Served in a snifter.

A - Tan foam settles to a thick collar, leaving behind specks of lace. Black body that is quite opaque.

S - Hefty doses of vanilla, roasted malts, chocolate, oak, dark fruit, and perhaps a hint of whiskey.

T - Taste is quite similar, with roasted malts, caramel, vanilla, and dark fruits dominating the palate. Perhaps a tad sweeter than aroma, and with negligible whiskey contribution here. Alcohol is well-hidden.

M - Medium body that is sufficient for 9% but definitely a bit light for an Imperial Stout. Slightly chewy and sticky texture, with a bit of oaky dryness in the finish. Some mild alochol warmth after a glass, but fairly tame.

D - Another pleasant Oklahoma surprise. The oak-aged element of this beer is pretty tame, but it's a tasty and competently brewed Imperial Stout. Hopefully my 2011 bottle is just as good.
