Appearance: It has a nice dark brown color to it. It has a nice creamy beige head that dies down moderately slow and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of pine resins, some citrus, roasted malts, chocolate and sweet caramel/toffee.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some bitter pine resins, citrus, some earthiness, roasted malts, dark chocolate and some faint caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color ale with a nice large off-white foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of bitter roasted malt is quite dominant with some strong dry hoppy notes. Taste is also dominated by dry bitter roasted malt notes with some deep citrus oriented hoppy notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. I have hard time understanding how this beer is rated so high. It is an OK version of a style that I don’t particularly like but not sure what really stands out. Also, the Saaz hops are very hard to pick-up in this mix.

500ml bottle poured into tulip 25/11/13

A very dark brown with a deep cola edge, two fingers of mocha foam has great retention leaving 5 distinct pencil thin rings before falling to a thin film, looks great

S chocolate syrup, faint smoke, floral, lots of tropical citrus, pine, a little booze and licorice

T coffee I didn't smell, big citrus and pine but the char and dark chocolate's just as strong, two extremes seem to work together

M medium full, a bitter bite, slick, almost slimy, a little heat, lots of rind, char and chocolate on the finish

O balance if far off in every direction if that makes any sense, rind, pine, big dark roast and char mingle well together, booze is well concealed

best of both worlds in this one, big swings from one sip to another, there's many things I don't like about Alberta but my selection of beer isn't one of them. I'm curious how this has a BB of 2017, perhaps the BIPA BW is the next style?

Really mellow but rich and toasty, which is very surprising especially for a black ipa. So many of them are over-hopped and/or bitter, but not this one. On the other hand, this one is not at all bland or watery either. This guy is super drinkable but also complex. It's in the top three black ipa's I've ever had -- and I've tasted at least a dozen of them.

A: The beer is very dark brown in color - and is black when viewed from afar. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that has good retention properties and hardly died down.
S: Light to moderate aromas of caramel and dark roasted malts are present in the nose along with slight hints of pine resin hops.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of roasted malts along with notes of caramel and toffee malts along with a light amount of bitterness. Hints of spiciness are also noticeable.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer wasn't as hoppy as some of the other beers I've had but I won't hold this against the beer because it was aged for a year.

500ml bottle into a tulip

pours a dark brown color with a 2 inch light, lasting beige head. big alcohol/boozy aroma on the nose. well..this is definitely not an IPA. taste is big on bitter booziness. dont dislike it but its not what i was expecting. not hoppy at all. the label art is a lie! full bodied with medium carbonation. huge alcohol taste makes this one not very drinkable. i would have guessed this was more in the 10-11% ABV than 8.5.

overall not bad flavorwise, but the massive alcohol punch wasnt very pleasant. would pass on this in the future.

Pours a red tinged dark brown with billowing tan head, settles to a nice clump in the middle of the glass with sticky rings of lace. Smell: some roast, black bread, pine and floral hopping. Taste: milk chocolate, light roast, pine, candied fruit, citrus peel. Nice black IPA with porter leanings... nothing mind blowing, not worth the sticker price.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 16.9 oz. bottle into a Russian River pint glass.

A: Dark brown, somewhat translucent, with a thick, fluffy light tan head and moderate visible carbonation.

S: Fruity chocolate is the overall impression for me. Chocolate roasted malts, citrus and bits of tropical fruit hops. Some pine hops lingering about in the background. This doesn't have a huge nose, but what's there is good.

T: Deep-roasted malt and bitterness (combination of roast and hop bitterness). Citrus rinds and pine resin in the hop profile, but overall this isn't as hoppy as one would expect. Hop bitterness and roast bitterness in the hang.

M: Medium to heavy body, mild alcohol burn, and good carbonation sensation.

O: This is pretty tasty, but not quite as hoppy as I was hoping for in a Black IPA. If there's going to be this amount of roasted malt in the beer, the hops have to be bigger, especially the dry-hopping. Still, very happy to have tried it.
