don't quite remember where i got this one, but thanks to whoever!

500ml bottle. sampled feb 27/2011.

pours deep dark brown, nearly black and mostly opaque. a dense light brown head forms, dropping quickly to a fat ring around the glass and leaving plenty of spotty lace.

aroma is great. coffee and dark chocolate. caraway. pumpernickel bread, perhaps lightly toasted. touch of alcohol. spicy and lightly herbal. slightly earthy. light caramel.

taste is good. dark and bittersweet chocolate. espresso. bit of milk chocolate. caraway and pumpernickel. lightly toasted whole wheat bread. bit of biscuit and cracker. lightly warming alcohol. bit of caramel. medium-light bitterness level, more chocolatey than hoppy. herbal and earthy, with a touch of spicy bite from the caraway.

mouthfeel is good. just over medium body. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is good. pretty well balanced, just a little of the alcoholic heat coming through. nice depth. the extra dimension from the caraway and spice mixes well with the base beer. good stuff.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew snifter. Pours pitch black with a healthy, fine, two finger brown head with great retention and lots of lacing. Good aroma of dark toasted malt, chocolate and a touch of spicy rye. Flavor is smooth milk and dark chocolate, toasted malt with a hint of char, mild toffee. Finishes with very mellow blended dark malt, chocolate, char and light hop bitterness. Nice medium creamy body. Wow, a beautifully balanced and well integrated porter. The malts are some variety of chocolate malt that is great. Deceptively smooth and mellow mannered, but with interesting additional light flavors of char and light rye spiciness. Really nice. Stumbled on this on a trip and hope to find another bottle.

500ml bottle.

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate brown/black with two fingers of frothy mocha head.

Smell - Roasted malts, dark chocolate, spicy rye, cocoa.

Taste - Bold roasted malts, spicy rye notes, a hint of licorice flavour (from the fennel seed).

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall - A porter that sits right on the borderline between stout and porter territory. Very nice roasted malt flavour with the rye and fennel seeds to accompany. Perfect companion for the changing seasons in Alberta.

500ml bottle. It's officially fall, so time to tackle the pumpkin and darker beers in earnest.

This beer pours a solid black, with very slight basal cola edges, and three pudgy fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and mildly creamy beige head, which leaves some nice layered webbed lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of bittersweet chocolate, grainy, bready, and lightly spicy wheat and caramelized barley malt, cafe au lait, a bit of demarara sugar, and mild earthy, leafy hops. The taste is more big cocoa sweetness, day-old coffee, caramel malt, tamely spicy rye grain, dark sugar, a bit of tangy anise, and some earthy, floral, and perfumed hops.

The bubbles are good and plenty, the body a solid medium weight, fairly smooth, and decidedly creamy. It finishes on the sweet side, chocolatey, softly Eastern European bakery in its breadiness, and indistinct in its hoppiness.

An agreeable porter, big and brash, chocolate up the yin and the yang. What I'm not really seeing, hearing (?), smelling, and tasting, is the pumpernickel, beyond a timid rye participant in the overall malt interplay. Ah well, still good for what it is, though, and not for what I thought it might be, I suppose.

A - deep brown, black cola appearance with a velvet mocha head. Lots of dotted lacing.

S - bready, bitter sweet chocolate, rye bread, roasted malt sometimes verging on burnt, hints of cola.

T - bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, similar burnt notes as aroma, rye bread, light spice, roasted nuts, light smokey leather.

M - medium to full with low carbonation.

D - very tasty. Baltic porter with rye and spice replacing dark fruits.

On tap at the Mikkeller bar in SF.

A dark beer with scattered lacing that is opaque and matte.

It smells like sweet cocoa.

It tastes amazing. Spicy and deep and roasted and really malty. Rich and deep and chocolatey and amazing. Highly recommended. Would have again. And again?

Mouthfeel is round then dry.

Bottle received as a gift from the best bistro/coffee shop in Topeka, KS! Thanks Jayson!

Appearance: A gentle pore from a 16 oz bottle into a Boulevard tulip resulted in two fingers of fizzy, dark brown reddish head. Beautiful black body. Eventually the head reduced itself to a tan ring; a swirl turned it into a nice thick cap. Great legs.

Smell: Dark roasted malts, coffee beans and brown sugar. Black liquorice and toasted rye bread.

Taste: More of those nice roasty dark malts and brown sugar. Spicy rye. Sweet, toasted bread. Bready finish. No heat. Why not? Some pumpernickel bread.

Mouthfeel: Slick and sticky. A thicker mouthfeel would not be a bad idea. Sufficient as it is.

Overall: Would have gone great with some blue cheese! Pleasantly surprised as I was not expecting much. The addition of the rye is what really made the beer for me. Loved the label artwork. Recommended.

500ml bottle into a pint glass. no bottling date.

Pours a very dark brown, close to black color with a milky inch thick beige head. Very attractive appearance. Off rye aromas on the scent, but not much there honestly. taste is where this one hits home...AMAZINGLY smooth and drinkable. chocolate up front , sweet chocolate not dark, rye in the back, not overpowering but its there. extremely good on the palate. wow im in love. creamy and smooth, no alcohol at all. so easy to drink.

overall im thoroughly impressed and say this one borders on world class. its a desert, a real treat. the bottle artwork is what drew me to this one and im so happy i bought it. amazing beer.

A flawless looking beer. Deep, dark brown with a creamy, light tan head that pour big but settles as a nice and creamy one finger head. Lacing is there. Drinking it still leaves a thin creamy head.

Smells nice and interesting. A chocolate forward beer. Nutty, a little 'earthy'. And off the smell this seems to be a reasonably sweet beer. It is slightly different though, I am sure this is the rye. I never really had a rye beer but I can get a form of spiciness most people speak about with rye. This beer has invited me to try more rye beers.

A very very pleasant beer. Nice and balanced. Sweet, chocolaty, caramel, a little spicey and a light roastiness.
No distinct hop aroma's but this beer is nearly three years old, probably the oldest beer I've had by far.

Overall a delicious brew. I don't know about ryebread (pumpernickel), I never eat that (I will seek it out now thanks to this beer), but Dutch ryebread is very different anyway.

Mouthfeel, by the way, is nice and creamy. Medium I'd say with low carbonation.

If you can still find this beer, seek it out as it is good.

As it warms up the spices come out more. Giving it a slight liquorice aroma, added to the ones I mentioned earlier. Good stuff!
