500ml split with Kevin. Label states that it's brewed with rye and fennel seed.

A - Dark brown body, nearly black but some clarity is noticeable. Nice fluffy cloud of beige head retains great at about a half-finger, nice lace too.

S - Good amount of roast, definitely getting a dark bread vibe there as well. Chocolate, licorice, spices. Some nutty and coffee tones along with some hoppiness. A touch on the tame side but pretty nice.

T - More chocolate/sweetness forward, though still a decent amount of roast and some smokiness there as well. Less so than the nose, it doesn't really scream 'pumpernickel' to me, but the fennel seed/licorice is definitely there along with some other various spices. Still some hop action there as well (grass/pine).

M - Somewhat high carbonation for the style, bitterness makes this somewhat of a sipper, body is fine overall. Flavors are intense enough to maybe mistake this for an imperial stout, but the feel itself retains its porter-ness.

O - While I'm not sure it exactly delivers as a pumpernickel beer, it is still a solid porter-leaning-towards-stout, the fennel and spice elements add a unique touch.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew snifter. Pours pitch black with a healthy, fine, two finger brown head with great retention and lots of lacing. Good aroma of dark toasted malt, chocolate and a touch of spicy rye. Flavor is smooth milk and dark chocolate, toasted malt with a hint of char, mild toffee. Finishes with very mellow blended dark malt, chocolate, char and light hop bitterness. Nice medium creamy body. Wow, a beautifully balanced and well integrated porter. The malts are some variety of chocolate malt that is great. Deceptively smooth and mellow mannered, but with interesting additional light flavors of char and light rye spiciness. Really nice. Stumbled on this on a trip and hope to find another bottle.

500ml bottle.

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate brown/black with two fingers of frothy mocha head.

Smell - Roasted malts, dark chocolate, spicy rye, cocoa.

Taste - Bold roasted malts, spicy rye notes, a hint of licorice flavour (from the fennel seed).

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall - A porter that sits right on the borderline between stout and porter territory. Very nice roasted malt flavour with the rye and fennel seeds to accompany. Perfect companion for the changing seasons in Alberta.

500ml bottle. It's officially fall, so time to tackle the pumpkin and darker beers in earnest.

This beer pours a solid black, with very slight basal cola edges, and three pudgy fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and mildly creamy beige head, which leaves some nice layered webbed lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of bittersweet chocolate, grainy, bready, and lightly spicy wheat and caramelized barley malt, cafe au lait, a bit of demarara sugar, and mild earthy, leafy hops. The taste is more big cocoa sweetness, day-old coffee, caramel malt, tamely spicy rye grain, dark sugar, a bit of tangy anise, and some earthy, floral, and perfumed hops.

The bubbles are good and plenty, the body a solid medium weight, fairly smooth, and decidedly creamy. It finishes on the sweet side, chocolatey, softly Eastern European bakery in its breadiness, and indistinct in its hoppiness.

An agreeable porter, big and brash, chocolate up the yin and the yang. What I'm not really seeing, hearing (?), smelling, and tasting, is the pumpernickel, beyond a timid rye participant in the overall malt interplay. Ah well, still good for what it is, though, and not for what I thought it might be, I suppose.

It's been a while my friend and man you look impressive not in a gay way just pure admiration dark kola hue with a khaki laced three finger creamy head and clingy lacing everywhere very good looking, dark chocolate, rye and hops are the main aromas and the mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice carbonation the tastes are dark chocolate, bready bready malts, rye, spice and finished with a herbal hoppiness and overall it's a very unique drop that I'd buy again cheers.
