Pours a murky dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with roasted malt, cocoa, acidic, and dark fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour cocoa and dark fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a below average beer that is definitely suffering from a mild infection, but is still fairly drinkable as it is.

Poured from a magnum bottle into a large pilsener glass. I got a little too aggressive on the pour, which I thought was fairly moderate, and ended up with about 3 inches of billowy, creamy, pale brown head with tufts resembling whipped cream. The head remains creamy and exceedingly sticky throughout the tasting. The beer is very dark brown with ruby highlights with some haze apparent.
A very distinctive aroma of roasted malts, with plenty of complex dark fruit flavors, molasses, chocolate, caramel and a little dark cherry tang. The complex of flavors and alcohol warming in both the taste and aftertaste are somewhat like a good liqueur. It also has that sort of tanginess that seems to be unique to continental European beers. The flavor is perhaps more like a doppel bock than a typical stout, but the body is quite creamy and stout-like.
I paid only $6.99 for this magnum, which struck me as a very good deal. I had not seen this brand in my town before, and am encouraged by the increasing variety of craft beer in my neck of the woods.
