Pours a murky dark brown with a firm beige head. The aroma is medium sweet with chocolate and coffee as well as some earthy hops. The flavor is roasted and malty with coffee, chocolate caramel and raisins. More bitter toward the finish. I must admit, Belgian Stouts have been growing on me lately.

Though the label says "Mild Stout," this appears to be nothing of the sort, and confusing a lot of users on BeerAdvocate.com. Let's see what all the hoopla is about.

Deep and dark, color is a near opaque ruby red. Creamy tan head drops to a healthy lacing and sticks. Smells of sweet, overripe fruits with a deep caramel beneath. Super smooth and creamy on the palate--velvety texture. More dried fruits soaked in alcohol, with a semi-tart cherry flavor and leafy bitterness. Gummy center. Sweet with toffee, notes of chocolate, some roast coffee, hint of fig meat, and a tangy molasses. Dry chicory, burnt and smoky edges. Black pepper, under a slightly warming alcohol. Finish is dry, with lingering malty notes and some yeasty characters that eventually clean up nicely.

Definitely not a Stout in the traditional sense, but the Belgians are great at putting their own unique twist on things. It's a bit sweeter than expected, but complex and easy on the palate. A good pick, and worth checking out for a completely different kind of Stout.

Best by 11/15/12

A - Pours a deep red/brown with more than three fingers tan head. Head has great retention and coats the glass with lacing.

S - Lots of dark dried fruits, some vanilla and cocoa. Doesn't scream stout but is pretty appealing.

T - Similar to the nose with a more pronounced chocolate/cocoa presence and some roasted malts that bring a bit of earth into the taste. Finish is dey and somewhat bitter.

M - Medium mouthfeel that starts semi-creamy and finishes dey and bitter.

O - Pretty solid all around, if not outstanding in any particular way. I would have this again.

Picked up a mini-growler and an 11.2 ounce bottle (best before dating of 23/08/08 on the cap)of this brew @ Half time this afternoon. Both versions pour a nice warm dark almond shade of amber, the bottled version seems to be much more highly carbonated. Dark tan head, better retention on the bottled sample and similar spotty lacing left behind.Similar nose of sweet caramel, and malted sweet milk, more prevelant in the growler sample. Srong, flavorful brew, notes of brandy, malted chocolate milk, caramel, bitter dark chocolate and some vanilla. I preferred the growler version, smoother, lower carbonation, give this a try if you like dark, strong Belgians. Nice night cap kind of brew or perhaps give it a try with a chocolate dessert.

Pours dark brown with red highlights and a short off-white head. Aroma was soap, funky yeast, marshmallows, prunes, and cocoa. Taste was much better. Rich chocolate, mocha, coffee, and toasty malt. It rapidly turns to cherries, yeast, and caramel/spun sugar/too sweet raisins. Interesting Belgian take on a stout.

Served in a crystal snifter at cellar temperature.

Hazy brown with orangey highlights and a big fat 2 inch head of thick and dimpled foam that lingers long and leaves wide sheets of lace rising up the sides of the glass.

Aroma of cocoa and brown sugar, plus hints of molasses and raisin.

Rich and complex flavor with lots of nuances moving in and out. Cocoa and plum and fig and molasses and espresso and raisin and deeply roasted malt, hints of bready yeast and overripe dark fruits. Some spiciness in the finish. Some smokey charred oak lingers, along with a cherry or currant tartness.

Full and chewy mouthfeel, but finishes tingly and a bit crisp and tannic.

This is fantastic, I could sip it all night.

Pours a clouded brown with a fine even speckled lacing forms down the sides of my Chimay chalice. Hints of cherry and Belgian spice, go well with mild dark chocolate creaminess. Flavor fulled with tart fruit cherries/raisins, and hints of creamy chocolate. Mouthfeel medium bodied creaminess, fine effervescent definitely a mild Belgian stout compared to bigger brasher American counterparts. Drinkability overall is very good, not the best or worst Belgian around one of thos beers that I'm glad I could buy a reasonable priced single around 4 bucks for a year old bottle. Good deal with some age on it aleady from 6/10/10.

On tap at HopCats. Pour is very dark brown; fairly clear with a small but durable head that leaves a good bit of sticky lacing.

The aroma and flavor are complex and rich, and certainly not like a typical export stout. In fact, this seems more like a Belgian strong Dark to me. However, there is a substantial component of dark roasted malts mixed in with the molasses, cooked dark fruits, and burnt sugars.

O: recommended.

Appearance - Nice dark amber color with a nice head that gave some pretty heavy lacing.

Smell - Chocolate with roasted coffee. Mild molasses with a hint of nuts. I smell a sour note but it is very subdued.

Taste - Sour apple mixed with chocolate and roasted coffee. The sour notes really make themselves known on the tongue.

Mouthfeel - Incredibly pleasant and crisp. The sour notes excite the palate and mix with the bitter chocolate notes. There is very little carbonation.

Drinkability - An exciting stout. The apple notes really balance with the bitter chocolate to make this incredibly drinkable and distinct. I definitely plan on getting more of these.

A-Pours a dark amber-brown w/light-beigehead. Some tracing, respectable retention.
S-Sweet malt, dough, raisins, light cocoa, molasses, very faint spice.
T-Sweet malt, raisin, chocolate malt (erring in favor of the malt), light hops in the finish that cleanse.
M-Medium body w/velvety mouthfeel and w/perfect amount of restrained carbonation.
D-This is not a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. It lacks the spice character, and even the bottle says "mild stout." Also, the abv is incorrect (8.2% on bottle). The alcohol is somewhat masked...you can tell it's strong, but it goes down very smoothly.

A- This beer pours a super thick cream light tan head that takes up about 1/2 of the glass and pushes above the rim. There is a warm brown body that is dense but lets light in toward the base of the beer. There is a super strong carbonation of tiny bubbles that keep that head growing.

S- The slightly sweet earthy black malt aroma has smells of dark caramel sugar following it with a white candy sugar and cream note in the finish.

T- This beer has a light musty almost horsy taste followed by notes of brown sugar and dark black roasted malt with hints of dark toffee. There is a light bitterness in the finish that is from roasted malt and not hops with a light alcohol taste to clean of the finish. The horsy taste increases as the beer warms.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a light pucker at the finish.

D- This beer has a nice dark malt flavor and some nice wild yeast characteristics. This is a creative beer that shows fusion done right can really make a good beer.

Ok...this is interesting....they call it a mild stout and it comes in at 8.5% ABV. Hmmmm....
Pours a deep deep reddish brown almost black. Nice full finger tan head that melts almost immediately to very thin lacing.
Aromas are definitely Belgium in nature....Belgium yeasts faintly but Belgium style malts intensely. Roasted coffee and chocolate....toasted malts...faint alcohol on the tail end.
Taste is again distinctly Belgium....toasted to burnt malt, roasted coffee and dark, deep chocolate. There is a hops presence because I have an immediate drying after swallowing being left with reminisces of bitter sweet chocolate, but I can't identify it. Nothing citrus or piney there. Just pleasant drying.
After taste is sort of, 'give me another sip of liquid chocolate'...it's dry and bittersweet chocolate all the way for me.
I like this. Definitely a different stout from anything I have tried....definately a Belgium taste and finish to it. Definitely worth the high price for 11.2 oz and definitely worth another.
This is either a wonderful stout or a wonderful belguim dark ale...I can't decide.

Had my first-ever bottle of this at Vol De Nuit in NYC, and took notes while enjoying it.

Poured a smallish light-tan head, on top of a deep milk chocolate color.

Aroma is toffee, dark fruits, burnt sugar and chocolate.

The flavor is so ridiculously close to a 5, but I just couldn't quite award it a grade of perfection. But man, this is delicious. Milk chocolate up front, followed by a fruity clip and gooey, creamy caramel background. Burnt toffee, yeast, peanut brittle linger in the finish. A lively spiciness emerges as it warms (probably more the alcohol than anything else).

Mouthfeel is creamy, milky, buttery, and moderately carbonated. Yummm...

YUM, I say again. Dessert beer for sure.

Poured into a tulip, on tap at The Good Life - Massapequa NY
A - Pours dark brown with a reddish hue. Some lacing in the glass, and a quickly disspating brown foam.

S - Complex scents of fudge, brown sugar, caramel, and roasty malt. Very nice!

T - Taste is subdued with flavors of chocolate, toffee, and caramel. This is a sweet beer that has a stout like taste.

M - Tastes heavy, and is a sipper. Hits pretty hard, but is not harsh on the palate or tongue.

O - Very glad to have tried this one. Would easily recommend this to a stout drinker. Probably the most layered belgian dark I can recall.

Appearance: This one pours a nice looking dark chestnut brown color. There's plenty of scarlet highlights around the edges despite it's slightly hazy appearance. The head is tan in color and easily two and a half fingers deep. It was slow to dissipate and left a sticky coat of lace clinging to the glass.

Smell: The nose is very nice, but falls well short of spectacular. It's primarily a well blended mix of chocolate and roasted malts. In true Belgian fashion, it smells lightly spiced. There's some dark fruit aromas at the secondary level. This is a complex and nice smelling beer. But, it seems like the malts tend to push everything else around.

Taste: The flavor is much even keel and well done. Chocolate and roasted malts are very flavorful and well balanced. Neither seems to win the tug of war, but it is worth noting that the chocolate malts strongly resemble milk chocolate (rather than dark). It features a light spicy flavor. Other than clove, the spices are unidentifiable, but really liven up the flavor. There's some light dark fruit flavors (mostly raisin and plum). Surprisingly, no alcohol is noted. It finishes sweet and slightly sour. Indeed, this is a very complex and flavorful beer.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's light bodied and has a pretty nice feel. Perhaps it's a tad too light. Carbonation is active, but it remains nice and smooth. Drinkability is very high. This is really an easy drinking beer, especially taking the 8.5% abv into account. It goes down way too easy for that stature.

Troubadour Obscura's a very impressive beer. I didn't quite know what to expect from this one. Color me very surprised and impressed. It's packed full of flavor and is very complex. Yet, it's an approachable and very drinkable beer. I think it could stand a little more body and a little work on the nose. But, it's a very good beer nonetheless. Definitely one to check out.

Picked up a single from Abe's Cold Beer for $4 and poured it into a tumbler. It opens with a big raisin aroma. The flavor follows the dried fruit character with bready cocoa notes that remind me of an English brown ale. Oddly enough, this beer seems a lot like an imperial English brown ale, if such a thing existed. The body is relatively drinkable and there's a mix of dark barley flavors with complimentary fruit. Overall, a well-made and interesting Beglian.
