Very dark brown in the Troubadour branded narrow tulip. Quite a big head which settles down to a surprisingly spritzy and sudsy mouthfeel.Rich yet tangy.

There is a distinct tart edge to this. Big chocolate taste and a winey, malty substance but not a bit sticky. Hoppy tasting with a bitter flavor of dark roasted coffee. Minty notes and a fruity finish of overripe nectarines. Hint of prunes and charred malt. Totally sippable.

An interesting variation on the really big stout theme. I wouldn't call it Russian; I like Belgian imperial stout. On tap at The Public House in La Jolla, Calif.

Huge huge head. Nice lacing throughout. Very dark brown black. Nice slightly sweet creamy chocolate taste. Very smooth beer and lots of flavor. Just love the creaminess. I had no problem drinking this as it goes down very smoothly. Would definitely drink this one again.

750mL bottle

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-
sensitive.

APPEARANCE : Very dark brown almost turning black with a generous fluffy light brown head. Does last quite long, though.

SMELL : First nose shows some chocolate, roasted malts, vegetal molasses. Second nose introduces some dark dried fruits to the chocolate/molasses side. Third nose almost has a liquorice side along with further expansion of previous aromas.

TASTES : Much more vegetal than expected. Hops are very present - mostly resins. Dark dried fruits are very upfront as well, but the main element is definitely molasses.

MOUTHFEEL : A little bit thin to my liking for an imperial stout. Still very well done, well balanced. Carbonation is fine.

OVERALL : Although it's not the best imperial stout I've had, it's definitely one I'd willingly buy again, given the chance. Wouldn't go out of my way for one, though.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 6/5/2012. Pours lightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, toast, toffee, raisin, fig, pear, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, toffee, raisin, fig, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, raisin, fig, toast, toffee, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and yeast ester flavors; with lush robustness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy and silky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a really excellent Belgian imperial stout! All around great complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Imperial stouts aren't really my thing, but I think this an excellent example.

A: amber, slight spotty lacing
B: sweet, chocolate, coffee
T: per smell, but maybe a light raspberry note, sweet but not sickly
M: smooth, creamy, but not thick
O: Still wouldn't want a full pint, but 12oz or is a full experience without being sated
