Served from tap in a snifter at Beelow's.

A new beer on tap means a new beer in my glass, especially in the time between the end of a shift and the impending beginning of a movie. This stuff pours a very deep black-brown topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, mild coffee, a hint of treacle, and a few bits of cocoa powder. The taste generally brings in more of the same, though from about the middle through the finish an intense roast- and coffee-based bitterness overpowers all else, literally causing a gradual recoil reaction (it takes a moment to realize what's happening in your mouth). The body is a stolid medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a solid stout that just overshoots things with that unnecessarily powerful blast of bitterness.

Imperial stout from Belgium pored from 750ml bottle. Deep dark brown with a little black in
there. Nice thick dark tan head and amazing frothy lacing. Nose of dark chocolate, sweet
Belgian malts, dark ripe fruits like plum and sweet cherries. Flavor is very nice with chocolate
and Belgian candy coming through on all sides, a dark fruity aftertaste like dark pie cherries is
present on the aftertaste, along with a nice mild hops coming through as well. Silky mouthfeel
makes this sipper a real treat. No burnt grain flavors, all just a nice moderately sweet stout
with a Belgian twist.

Very dark brown in the Troubadour branded narrow tulip. Quite a big head which settles down to a surprisingly spritzy and sudsy mouthfeel.Rich yet tangy.

There is a distinct tart edge to this. Big chocolate taste and a winey, malty substance but not a bit sticky. Hoppy tasting with a bitter flavor of dark roasted coffee. Minty notes and a fruity finish of overripe nectarines. Hint of prunes and charred malt. Totally sippable.

An interesting variation on the really big stout theme. I wouldn't call it Russian; I like Belgian imperial stout. On tap at The Public House in La Jolla, Calif.
