First, while listed here as an American black ale, the bottle says that it is a black imperial IPA. It certainly has the hops and ABV to prove it! It pours a dark, opaque brown-black with a lovely, creamy light tan head with wonderful retention. The nose has plenty of resiny pine and sweet citrus hops (though not overwhelming as some DIPAs), but notes of toffee and burnt malt are also present with even a touch of chocolate. The taste follows the nose, hitting you first with the hops and then bringing the burnt malt and drier, stout-like finish. The mouth is smooth, creamy, low-carbonation, full-bodied deliciousness with a somewhat dry finish. All around a great and very unique beer!

With experimentation at its core, Troubadour's wonderful blend of chocolate and citrus weave together in a charming yin & yang relationship and then wrapped in a soft Belgiany cocoon.

Pouring a solid but murky brown, the beer's frothy foam stance sheds rich aromatics of toasted grain, chocolate and orange. A slight tinge of peppercorn tingles the nose as the luscious taste of caramel and chocolate begin to saturate the tastebuds, its full carbonations engulfs the mouth with a creamy and lightened weight.

With the flavors unfolding across the middle palate, its malt sweetness relaxes and its chocolate character turns bitter and coffee-like. With more earthy components rising, a toasty, nutty and chicory flavor beings to counter the retreating sweetness. The hoppy side of balance reveals the dried citrus taste of grapefruit and orange and a trending bitterness that aligns more with the pith and skins of fruit.

Even with its high rate of carbonation, the ale is robust and creamy and its dryness is moderate. With the linger of chocolate and spent coffee grounds, the hops achieve a mere even-keel status with a simmering peppery warmth.

330 Ml. Bottle, found in Belgium.

One of my favorites in the country, this beer was a surprise delight. It pours not quite black but close to it. The taste is complex, not overpoweringly dark or bitter but very full and leaves a nice fresh aftertaste that just makes you want more and more. I found it again in Amsterdam and grabbed a couple bottles.

Troubadour Westkust Black Imperial IPA changed the color of my clear tulip glass to a very dark - almost black hue that exhibited a red cast when held up to the light. Atop sat a nice creamy and frothy 2-finger tan head that over [a long] time was reduced to chunks of sticky lacing that held to the sides of the glass. A nice looking ale. The nose is dominated by roasted malt, coffee and light notes of chocolate and citrus hops. The taste starts out rich and sweet with toasty malt (caramel and chocolate) followed by dry citrus hops with a lingering light bitter finish. The mouth feel is thick, smooth and a little sticky.

Overall, a pleasant ale that drinks like an English Stout but finishes like an IPA..

Tasted from a 330 ml bottle in France.

L - Pitch black beer; no light gets through. Off-white head is fluffy, creamy and similar to the krausen of a fermenting beer. Very persistent and sticky.

S - Earthy, savory hops combined with low malt notes. Emphasis on hops. Malt gives a roasted coffee note.

T - Mix of roasted coffee-like malt and earthy, savory hops. Good balance. Late in the palate sweet, lightly toasted malt flavors combine to give a chocolate milk effect.

F - Thick body. Creamy carbonation, but it doesn't cut through the body. Bitterness is moderate to high. Alcohol is obvious as a light burn.

O - A good, well-executed beer, but too sweet, thick and alcoholic to really win me over.

Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Belgium, Miorge Mihoublon. Dark mahogany pour with a two finger beige head with great retention and lacing. The nose is classic Black IPA with great balance between the roasty malts and the hops. Lots of toffee and caramel along with piney hops, orange peel, cocoa, roasty coffee, and tangerine. The taste is rich and bold with sweet and toasty caramel malt up front, followed by juicy, piney, resiny hops along with hints of fresh roasted coffee, molasses, and some subtle chocolate. The mouthfeel is thick and creamy with incredible balance and a great bittersweet finish. Overall, this is right up there with my favorite Black IPA's.

Pours a muddy brown color with an off white head, Lace is left behind and looks like a well hopped black ale. The aroma has toffee, leather, herbal tea and candy sweetness. The taste has ample pithy citrus and pine needle sap, brown sugar, and iced tea. Nice semi sweet and bitter flavors working together, hops and Belgian yeast. Sugary, yet slightly hoppy and dry, Well rounded, well balanced dark Belgian IPA. Perhaps the best of a rare breed.

Light black in color with a murkiness when held up to light. A quarter inch of beige head is on the top. Sweet aroma of dark malt and molasses permeates the top of the glass. Thick lacing is present. The flavor is on the sweeter side with loads of sweet malt,molasses,and black licorice. There are some hops present but they are definitely in the background and give it a spruce note. The mouth is chewy and viscous. Not what I expected,but a Belgian take on this style is still a treat.

Dark brown color , good off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt, hoppy citrus notes and coffee. Taste is very hoppy with notes of tropic fruits and roasted malt. Full body , moderate carbonation . Long bitterness in aftertaste. Great!

Pours very dark brown, almost completely black, one finger head that recedes just a bit and lasts a very long time.
Smells incredible. Caramel and roasted malts, sweet citrus (like over-ripe oranges), chocolate, marzipan, faint coffee, toffee, raisin, plums, faint spruce, leafy hops, vanilla, and i think i could go on for quite a while.
First thing i find out tasting it is that it's incredibly smooth. As for the taste itself: nice mix of roasted malts, chocolate and a bit of coffee in the start, burnt sugar, faint dark bread crust. Some fruitiness underneath, nice figs, raisin, some dried (bit smoked) plums, touch of sour cherries. Not so spicy, just some woody dark spices, like cinnamon, faint vanilla, dried orange peel and a bit of nutmeg. Some nice clean herbal notes in the finish, nice hops, like black and strong green tea combined, giving off a nice bitterness along with the roast.
As i said, really smooth, medium body and fizz, feels.. fluffy. The big abv is hidden nicely and reminds of coffee liquor.
These guys know how to brew beer. Sure, the Belgian twist overpowers the hops, but you get a big tasty ration of both.

33cl Bottle: BBD 25th Apr 2016. Drank on 30th Jan 2014 in 't Brugs Beertje.

Pours almost a true black, but it's really dark, dark brown with a deep red hue: lightly tanned head.

Burnt malts rule the nose, they also take over the taste but not as much as in the aroma.

In the mouth dark fruit flavours within a chocolate bar and a bittering hop undertone stop the beer becoming one dimensional and help to hide the 9.2% ABV which is always hanging around in the background.

Different and most enjoyable.

750ml, white foil, capped bottle. Thanks to hoppypocket for the trade. Wow, there's a hop varietal called 'West Coast' in Belgium? Heh, imitation, and all that.

This beer pours a hazy, very dark russet brown hue, with three fingers of puffy, slick, and bulbous beige head, which leaves some stellar distant storm system lace around the glass as it slowly dissolves.

It smells of well roasted caramel malt, aged orange and grapefruit juice, earthy yeast, dark chocolate-covered cherries, subtle dry coffee, plum wine, and leafy, faintly piney hops. The taste is more lightly toasted caramel malt, salted toffee, astringent black fruit - prunes, cherry, and raisin - yeasty whole wheat bread, long-unraked leaves, bittersweet chocolate, weak coffee, strong herbal tea, and more leafy, citrusy, and pinecone hops.

The carbonation is fairly active, in a low-key, almost soothing manner, the body a sturdy medium weight, and as smooth as can be, given the invasive nature of the citrus and pine hop notes. It finishes off-dry, the roasted bready caramel malt, dwindling yeast, dark fruit, and bitter citrus and pine hops all still in play.

A rather well-wrought Cascadian ale, the roasted character not interfering, or worse, detracting from the hoppy and fruity side of things. Instead, a gentle balance is achieved, wherein the big ABV is obfuscated, and the itinerant flavours melded. Cool that the hops here are all Belgian, because I could have sworn otherwise - old world, this is certainly not, however, a bit of that region's brewing ethos does seem to gradually seep in.

Bottle: Poured a deep burgundy color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of dry earthy hops with some dry roasted malt notes. Taste is a mxi between some roasted malt with dry bitter notes with some earth hops with and almost astringent finish. Body is light with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A bit too much astringency to be truly enjoyable.

From a 750ml bottle, foil on cap marked "Best Before 25APR2015." Served in a Marriott Residence Inn wine glass (don't ask...)

Appearance is a murky, cloudy brown. Like an unfiltered wheat beer that has mud mixed in it. Huge buff head (at least in this inappropriate glass) and lacing out the yin-yang.

Smell is gorgeous. Prunes and malt unabashedly in your face. And it you don't like that, there's raisins. And more malt.

Taste is like three beers for the price of one. First taste follows the nose, like a typical Belgian ale. Second wave is chocolatey like a stout. Third wave transitions from chocolatey to roast to a bitter hop finish. Not a clean finish - this beer is too sticky for that. But it's a fascinating ride.

Kolby at Spec's in Temple, Texas apparently recommended this (so said the signs) - and I have to give him the nod. I would not have tried it otherwise, and it's quite interesting and worth seeking out if you like the multi-faceted approach this brew brings.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, best before 9/6/2015. Pours lightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a nice 2-3 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that last. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of orange, grapefruit, lemon zest, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, light char, pine, floral, toast, grass, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, light char, toast, floral, pine, grass, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, toast, light char, floral, pine, grass, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a fantastic balance of roasted malt/hop flavors with balanced bitterness; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full body; with a fairly creamy, slick, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial black IPA! Awesome balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. An extremely delicious offering.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance – Pours a dark brown color bordering on chestnut with a thick and billowy cream colored head. The head has a fantastic level of retention slowly fading to give a fantastic level of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a sweet mix of dark roasted aromas and dark fruit aromas. Chocolate and coffee are mixed with some cherry and prune producing a dark and sweet smell. Combined with these are aromas of vanilla along with a hop profile of some citrus and some pine.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet roasted malt and dark fruit flavor mixed with other flavors of a light citrus hop. It tastes much more porter like upfront with the roasted malts being quite strong. The chocolate flavors are rather potent and are mixed with dark fruit of cherry and plum The chocolate and bready flavors seem to dwindle as the taste moves on however, allowing a more coffee flavor to come to the tongue. Along with this transition, other hop flavors beyond the initial citrus greet the tongue. The hops are largely of a pine and some lighter herbal flavors. In the end the flavors leave a roasted sweet coffee and chocolate, lightly hoped more like porter flavor, to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is rather light for one for 9.4% abv with a carbonation level that is on the lighter side. The lower carbonation is great for the more porter like and lighter hoped qualities of the brew while the body being light ,made it dangerously drinkable.

Overall – I was expecting something much more hoppy and much less sweet and chocolaty, but was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness in its drinking as well as the rich flavor profile of the brew. A very nice on to try if you get the chance.

Not listed on the draft menu at Gollem, the bartender recommended that I give this Imperial Black Ale a whirl. Trusting him this time reaped a major reward. On to the beer:

The color is black as ink and topped with a long lasting head which leaves a lot of lacing around the glass. One smell had me feeling for good things to come. The aroma is very strong and brings burnt chocolate, brownies, and plenty of resin. Bring it on!

This is Belgian ale, but it tastes very American. The taste is powerful, leading off with semi-sweet chocolate and a big hoppy flavor. The hops bring a tea-like flavor. It also brings burnt leaves, yet despite all this, the big malt and big hops manage to work together instead of trying to one-up each other. It's full bodied and smooth, with the final touch being an ABV level which is hidden very well.

Now that's what I call being impressed! This is not your usual Belgian ale in terms of beauty, finess, or character. This is a beast of an ale, and well excecuted. An absolute must try if you find it.

The aroma is awesomely captivating as you pour it out, dark fruits, some spices and mild roasted malts mixed in with some light coffee smells all collaborate together to work up your appetite for this ale. It looks like a great ale, thick fluffy head filled to the max with billowy bubbles, very creamy and all rounded together by a thick wall of lacing. Did I mention it’s a tan color! The body of the beer is very dark; I can’t even get any other hues when held up to the sunlight, its simply dark brown mixed in with some reds creating an almost black body. Crisp and sharp at first, it reminds me more of a stout at this point. It’s slightly creamy and the mouth feel is medium to thin, leaning on the thin side. Its mildly tart overall and the dark fruits and spices come out as it hits the center of your tongue, the roasted malts and coffee flavors come out right before the aftertaste kicks in. As it warms up, the mouth feel become a little thicker and is definitely a medium bodied beer, the aftertaste remains the same, slightly bitter with dark chocolate and tart berries.

An average pour easily fills half the glass with tan foam, mostly smaller bubbles but not a dense microfoam, excellent retention and as it slowly dissolves starts to dimple and take on a more delicate wispiness, once it leaves enough room to assess things, thin but ultra-sticky lacing is revealed, random broad blotches across the insides of the glass. Extremely murky brown liquid with a yellow tinged glow to it, too opaque to see if there’s any bubbles around. The nose has an explosive quality to it, a hand grenade of cocoa, coffee, rye bread, burnt caramel, dried cherries and raisins, pine needles and charcoal, softens some into oats and other cereal grains, what’s interesting is how it lacks ostentation and no one element shouts above the others, hard to achieve this kind of integration at its size and volume. It’s medium-bodied and has an overall dryness which lessens its weight, much more roast here and crisp snap. Bitter dark chocolate, coffee bean, leafy herbaceousness and cracked pepper, only after some time will it let out the sweeter caramel to butterscotch notes. Some cherry and dark berry but the fruit is light and close to zero citrus presence. The carbonation has some gears in reserve and keeps it kicking forward. At the end you get a good dose of black licorice and sour breadiness. Both texturally as it vibrates and in terms of flavor intensity, long finish. Intelligently impressive.

Pours brown with a lasting head.
Nose shows complex roasted malt with chocolate, cocoa, roasted coffee and oatmeal notes along with very soft spicy and resinous hops. Lovely.
The complex roasted malt follows as a flavour with more coffee. Some booze follows, lending a coffee liqueur character. Not all that much hops but there's some definite resinous and piny notes. Well-balanced bitterness in the finish.
Nice soft carbonation, but it could be upped a little.

Served from tap into Troubadour tulip. Poured a massively dark brown (almost black) with a three finger light tan head that subsided to one finger very slowly . Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, earth, dark chocolate, earth hop, and subtle spice. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, wood, earth, earth hop, and subtle spice. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. The roastiness you would expect from the style was definitely there. The dark chocolate aspect going on was a nice addition to the other aspects going on in this one. For te style this one definitely stands out from some of the other examples with a really good balance. Glad I got the chance to try this one and suggest you do the same.

On tap at Max's yesterday. First time I've ever seen this beer.

The beer pours a very dark brown amber color with very good head retention and considerable sticky lacing all around. The nose is complex and terrific in this beer, as i pick up caramel, chocolate, smoke, light dry citrus and a hint of burnt toast. The flavor profile replicates the nose, with the dry citrus and burnt toast flavor balancing the moderate sweet choclate, brown sugar and caramel beautifully. The beer dries out fairly well on the long finish, and mouthfeel is fairly full otherwise. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, and so drinkabiltiy is pretty good.

Another excellent beer from these guys. I'm beginning to think they can't miss.

Poured into a tulip glass black with a HUGE white head. The head retention is AWESOME. The Lacing . . . seriously, I don't think I've ever seen lacing down the glass like this. The retention and lacing alone deserves the 5, it's literally a "hey, look at this" moment.

I have a lack of scent, and really can't point anything out on the scent of this beer.

The taste has alot of coffee, cocoa, and carmel. There's alot of dark roasted flavors in the palette. Not much Belgian yeast flavor that I would expect.

I agree with the previous review, this really is more like an Imperial Export Stout. Mouthfeel has about that much body, not thick like an IRS, but not like a IPA either. Carbonation is good.
