Poured from the bottle.

The beer poured a nice, cloudy-amber colour. The nose is malty, sweet, yeasty, and slightly hoppy. The taste is pretty intense. It is initially malty and sweet, which moves into a strong hop taste, and finishes with a bit of bitterness. The flavours mesh nicely, but it is definitely an intense combination of flavours. It is slightly reminiscent of Oktoberfest-style beers.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

John's bottle. A cute Belgian beer with lots of sweet and citrus finish. More Simcoe than Sorachi observed, so orange but also tangerine flavour. Good drinkability. Cloudy orange body with big bubbly head. Sweetish more than hoppy bitter. Medium bodied and smooth.

Served from tap into Trappe Door tulip. Poured a hazy red-orange with a two finger off-white head that subsided to a half finger slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, earth hop, spice, spicy hop, and subtle citrus. The flavor was of sweet malt, wheat, spicy hop, spice, bread, subtle dark fruit, and subtle citrus hop. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. The sorachi hops definitely shined through on this one throughout. If you are a big fan of spicy hopped brews, this one is for you without a doubt.

Bottle: Poured a bright cloudy orangey/amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet Belgian style malt with some floral and fruity hops notes. Taste is also dominated by some sweet malt notes with some fruity and floral hoppy notes with light peppery yeasty finish. Body is full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Closer to a strong Belgian ale then an IIPA but very much enjoyable.

Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Belgium, Miorge Mihoublon. Gorgeous copper-amber pour with a huge three finger fluffy white head with great retention and crazy lacing. One of the prettiest beers I've seen. The nose is well balanced with hints of sweet caramel malt and bread, along with a good amount of piney, citrus hops. The taste follows suit with hints of brown bread, caramel, white pepper, pine, grass, brown sugar, lemon, and tangerine. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, subtly creamy, with an oily finish. The 9% ABV is non-existent! Overall, this was a really pleasant surprise. Especially since I probably kept it in my cellar a bit too long. Definitely makes me want to check out the 2013 Galaxy version.

1pt. 9.4oz. - caged and corked brown bottle

Troubadour Magma Special Edition 2012 - Sorachi Ace changed the color of my tulip glass to a cloudy light amber hue. The head was nice looking, bubbly and off-white 2-fingers in height. Fine carbonation bubbles rushed to the top. The head had good retention and reduced to a collar of foam. The nose is a little lighter than anticipated. The first scent noticed was of sweet malt, lemon and a little yeast/bready. The flavor follows the nose but is stronger with a definite [medium] hop bitterness at the finish. The Ale is medium bodied with a light slick, and sticky mouth feel. The carbonation is medium-high.

Magma Special Edition 2012 [Belgian Triple IPA] is correctly classified as an Belgian IPA and not a Triple. The Ale is fruity like a Triple, however, has the bitterness of an IPA.

Pours a deep orange-ish color with a light tan head. In the aroma, a mellow nose of hops. In the taste, a fresh pine hop burn all the way through. A hop bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry pine hop in the aftertaste. Nice fresh hops, but quite mellow in nose and taste.

Served in a snifter at Firkin.

Yeah, if it's a "special edition", I'm prolly gonna try it... This stuff pours a clear sunrise amber topped by over a finger of cream foam. The nose comprises very light coconut, very light lemon zest, and caramel. Everything is decidedly muted, lighter than air. The taste holds notes of grassy lemon zest, orange zest, biscuit, light toffee, and a hint of Belgian yeast. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a decent enough BIPA; I think I was expecting something kinda crappy, considering my usual distaste for the Sorachi varietal, but this stuff wasn't half bad, even though I'd still take the usual Magma over this special edition on any given day.

Pours a cloudy, orange/copper color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of alcohol, sweet malt, slight caramel malt, hint of hop, hint of spice, and a hint of pale malt. Fits the style of a Belgian IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight alcohol, sweet malt, hint of pale malt, hint of wheat, and slight spice. Overall, slightly muted body, but great aroma and blend.

Never resting on their laurels, the Muskateers brewers engage the spicy, herbal, winey and juniper-like character found in the 'Sorachi Ace' hops to sculpt a strong beer that's restrained in robust character but is complex and drinkable. Well done brewers. Well done!

Its dark honey austere simply exudes a richer taste, but its billowing pillow of froth suggest something of more light fare. Once the nose hovers, fruity sweetness captivate the senses with candied apple, plum, berry and grape. But with that first sip, its candied effect hits home! Honey and cooked sugars lay on the tongue with a sultry and surly intrigue.

Flavors seem to duel out on the middle of the palate, seemingly sweet with steely caramel and hard candy in one sip, and then toasty and nutty the next. Once the vinous and hoppy notions latch on, the beer eventually achieves balance; taking on herbal tea, peppercorn, juniper and tart white grape. Its ester and phenol balance finishes the taste with white pepper and orange peel.

Though medium-full through the bulk of the session, the beer's fortified alcohol warmth adds spice to the soul and adds a much needed spice to the beer's overall balance. Aftertaste of fruit and vinous spice are long, warm and sweet.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, best before 8/1/2015. Pours lightly cloudy golden orange color with a nice 2 finger dense and fluffy off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with plenty of streaming carbonation retaining the head; fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lemon, lemon zest, orange peel, pear, apple, floral, grass, pine, honey, bread, pepper, herbal, floral earthiness, and yeast spiciness; some light estery alcohol as it warms. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop, malt, and yeast ester notes. Taste of lemon, lemon zest, orange peel, pear, apple, pine, floral, grass, honey, bread, pepper, herbal, floral earthiness, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of citrus, light fruits, pine, floral, grass, honey, bread, pepper, clove, floral, earthiness, and yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of hop and yeast esters; with a good balance of malt and spiciness; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly slick, sticky, and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice single hopped Belgian DIPA. Very nice balance and complexity of hop, malt, and yeast esters; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

750ml bottle poured into a goblet. Dry hopped from Sorachi Ace hops.
A: Pours a hazy orange color with a solid two-finger head
S: Reminds me of lemon ball candy- sweet, but with a pleasant lemon note
T: Initially a sweetness from the malt shows, but then it turns bitter near the finish. Disappointing, though is the absence of any of the citrus notes that were on the nose.
M: Medium bodied, a bit mouthcoating from the sweetness but the bitterness keeps it in check
O: Not a bad beer but far from memorable. While I liked this more than the regular Troubadour Magma, look to Brooklyn for a far better example of what Sorachi Ace hops can do

On tap at Lucky Baldwins in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, citrus zest, and herbal aromas. Taste is much the same with lemon and spice flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice Sorachi Ace hop presence in the aroma and flavor.
