Old World : Porter

Pours like a porter, blackish color with amber hues and a small head. Aroma is roasted and slightly off. In the flavor, very sour, and ripe with infection. Roasted malt and straight up vinegar. Being a fan of sours, I understand that some beers may be brewed this way, but this is clearly infected. Mouthfeel is syrupy and the sour flavor sticks with you. Overall, it was a no decision drainpour, and a failure. The bottling line must be suspect, because there is no reason for this porter to be soured this much. I would like to give it another try, but I won't be paying for it.

This porter had a dark brown color with a quickly diffused head. The smell had some off notes which I would quickly discover was from infection. The flavor tainted and it was obviously infected. I couldn't take more than a mouthful of this before throwing it away. I have seen similar reviews from others on this site so I feel confident this was not an isolated incident.

Liked the name (labeled as Dark Knight Porter), so I tried this. 22 oz. bottle, 6.5% ABV. Didn't like the beer much.

Appearance: a nice dark, dark brown, almost indistinguishable from true black. Small head.

Smell: a little stinky, not quite skunked, but like wild yeast had been used.

Taste: malty porter, but sour. Not a lot else going on, unfortunately. It would be passable, if uninspiring, if it were not so sour.

Mouthfeel: a little on the thin side, but OK.

Drinkability: I could keep drinking this, if only I liked the taste. Took a bit of dedication to finish it.

Arizona's not exactly famous for beer, but there's a lot better made in this state than this beer.

Unfortunately served in a plastic party cup in the tasting room, this beer was dark with an appropriately rich tan head. A cooked sugar aroma with highlights of toasted bread and a nice viscous mouthfeel. A fairly robust porter for being in the the English style, with notes of fresh bread, cocoa and mild fruitiness all coming together to form a pretty solid porter. Nothing mind-blowing, but all solidly within expectations for the porter style in general, whatever that counts for. Exponentially better that the other beers I sampled at this brewery (see review of Blonde ale), if the brewer is able to turn out more beers of this quality they might have a shot at drawing in some fans.

Dark brown in color with few highlights if any. The head is an off-beige foam of a good inch with little retention and acceptable lacing. Nose is exceedingly clean, with some toasted pastry notes and a hint towards dark fruits.

Flavors lean toward cocoa with a nod to coffee and good doses of English-style dark fruitiness. Over-carbonated, leaving a thin, slightly metallic body; the mouthfeel suffers a bit from the lack of creaminess. Makes it seem watery...

Not a slam dunk, but for a light take on the style from a local brewer, I'm definitely not put out. Beef up the malt bill to help out the nose, add some flavosr and thicken the mouthfeel.

I love trying beers from brewery's that I never tasted. Here's a 12 ounce bottle from Old World. On to the beer:

That's a thin head on top this ink black beer, where with time a few spots of lace stick to the glass. Okay so far. Sniff....there's a strange ointment which taints the sweet and roasty malt, which the latter pair smells like potential enjoyment. Oh geez, here we go...I taste sour grapes in an unappealing way. What a buzzkill, because the roasty and sweet malt behind that wall tastes pleasant. It's medium bodied with somewhat low carbonation, but damn, I was not ready for a sour porter.

thin body with a nice milky mouthfeel.

nice malt presence upfront, with a bready malt/ brown malt note.

Mild notes of chocolate and coffee with a mild bitterness.

Finishes with a sweet malt presence and dry bitterness.

Overall, very unimpressed. It's like a macro brewery attempting a micro beer.

First of all, i gave this beer a pretty hard pour. I'm not sure if there was a bottling issue, but there was no head... at all. The color was pretty good, very opaque, not much light made it through. Not a speck of lace. Enough said on appearance.

Just like I scored, this beer did smell like an average porter. Nice toasted malt, a little bit of coffee, but nothing really stood out. Very basic.

Like I said before, maybe there was a bottling issue, but there was no carbonation, so the mouthfeel was pretty flat, like drinking tap water.

A note on drinkablility: Does this mean that I can drink a lot, or does it mean that i would like to drink more?

I would not want to drink another one, there are many far superior porters on the shelf at my local liquor store that would be far better choices.
