Poured from a bottle into a Goose Island tulip. The pour is hazy, golden-orange, sports two fingers of fluffy white head, and is loaded with floaties. The nose is not as pungent as I anticipated, but still quite assertive and dripping with fresh oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and peaches.
The beer has a medium-full body and loads of flavor. I get a surprising amount of bready sweetness up front, with lots of marmalade and honey flavors. The hops round out the flavors and provide a fruity, quinine-like bitterness, but do not rake across your palate. I get notes of grapefruit, tobacco, and apricots. No booziness at all on the finish as the hops dry things out and leave a lingering flavor.
Overall a good IIPA, but it's not the palate-wrecker I thought it would be. The beer has a bottled-on date of 2/26/14, making it exactly 31 days old as of this writing. I am somewhat suspicious that this beer is not what it used to be (and baffled that a retailer like Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati continues to carelessly store their IPAs at room temperature). Ordinarily, I wouldn't buy an IPA that old, but I was desperate to try this one. It's good, but far from great. I would love to try it again when I can get a fresher bottle. I have a feeling that some of the magic may be lost from this one.
