On tap at Fat Heads Cleveland. The mother ship. The original. Well, not THE original, but it should be. Served in a snifter/tulip for around $5.

This beer has a nice appearance, the overall vibe is a hazy but mostly filtered look. The color ranges from straw to gold tones. There’s a nice white head that instantly leaves the second the glass reaches the table, leaving nice lace. Color, check. Lace, check. Head retention? Never heard of it.

The nose is inviting and alluring, even though a bit overly Americanized. The biggest notes come through courtesy of the big yeast. The aroma is huge banana and bubblegum with touches of clove. The sweet Belgian Candy malt sets a nice base, and, even though there are a touch of different esters, the yeast is fairly one-dimensional although impressively expressive.

The taste is almost cloyingly sweet and with a boozy, hugely sticky finish. The elements in the nose are again noted, especially the bubblegum and clove. There’s also pale malt topped with really sweet banana. The booze sticks out a bit here, but it’s kept relatively well undercover.

The mouthfeel was easily the most disappointing part. This beer, in a word, is boring. Add watery, candy stickiness and yeast that leaves one’s mouth dry as hell for good measure. Then mix in undercarbed, and you have a mouthfeel that made the record needle skip during a great groove. The drinkability/overall therefore needs to be just average. The beer drinks nicely in terms of booze but the mouth and overwhelming sweetness throws off.

Pours a clean orange-ish color with an off white head. In the aroma, sweet candy sugar. In the taste, sweet to dry candy sugar and hints of fruit and yeast. A smooth and medium to light bodied mouthfeel, with a dry candy sugar aftertaste. Hides the alcohol, a bit thin and watery, although nice.

Had on tap at Fat Head's Pittsburgh

A-pours a slightly hazed golden amber ale with a full off white head with a decent lace left behind.

S-the nose is slightly heavy on yeast, earthy with a light tang and fair bit of white peppery spice. candied sugars with notes of banana sweeten up the back with a fair bit of alcohol in the back.

T-the taste is brighter than the nose, the yeast is less dominant and it is rather sweet. again earthy yeast, plenty of candied sugars with a light banana and bubblegum. a fair bit of spice to the back, pepper and clove with a hint of citrus hops and a light bit of alcohol in the finish.

M-syrupy full body, creamy texture, assertive carbonation and semi dry finish.

D-solid beer, ripe with complexity. a little sweet but the yeasty spice and alcohol balance pretty well.
