Picked up at the recent bottle release for Headhunter. Unlabeled bottle into Sam Adams Perfect Pint...

A: Right off the bat I'm digging the thick, pillowy, uniform head on this beer. One of the best looking heads for an IPA in recent memory. Color is relatively standard: a pale golden orange, mostly cloudy. Exceptional retention and lacing, finely beaded, thick, and coating. Wow this is an impressive looking brew.

S: Very citrusy, creamy, and sweet smelling. I'm getting mostly tropical aromas: the classic orange rind, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, pineapple. Finely balanced bouquet, I could sniff this all day long.

T: More tropical notes, with some apricot and pineapple. Pine resin is more apparent in the flavor profile than it was on the nose. Some nice bittering oils here. As with Headhunter, this is an assertively hopped IPA that drinks relatively smoothly.

M: Flavors are very well balanced, relatively light bodied with medium-high carbonation. Maybe just a touch overcarbed.

O: An excellent IPA. Fat Heads seems to know what it's doing when it comes to this style. I'm not sure it's radically different in the flavor profile from Headhunter, perhaps a bit more tropical fruit and a little less bitterness. Which I love. Creamy, citrusy, delicious. This stands up there with White Rajah and Headhunter as not only the best in Ohio, but in the country. Let's hope they keep this one around.

Served on tap into a nonic glass at the brewpub

A- Poured a mostly clear orange, very slight haze. Frothy head that leaves glass coating lace

S- Sweet citrus, tropical, and melon notes

T- Very astringent hoppy beer. Combination of grapefruit, watermelon, peach, and tropical mango flavors. Sweet malty backbone accentuates this very hoppy beer. Finishes with an assertive bitterness

M- Very soft mouthfeel, prickly carbonation, effervescent

O- Fat Head's really knows how to make great IPAs, another very astringent, sweet, bitter, flavorful IPA that packs a punch. Really unique hop profile on this one.

64oz growler
Served in a pint glass

A - It pours golden, bordering on amber. A generous three inches of off white head settled to a film leaving some lacing behind.

S - The aroma is loaded with citrus and tropical fruit smells. There is also some pine in there.

T - I get the citrus tastes and even a little bit of the pineapple up front. These tastes give way to some resinous pine leaving a bitter aftertaste.

M - Medium. It's perfect for the style.

O - Fatheads makes some delicious IPA's and this is no exception.

X-Hop IPA
Fat Heads Brewery & Saloon

Pours a light gold color, clear, solid white foam cap and lacing down the pint. Aroma of pineapple, pine, oranges, herb, and sweet honey like malt character. In the taste, more of the same, West Coast IPA flavors of pineapple, mango, and citrus, with an earthy herbal hop bitterness. The malt foundation is sweet enough to balance, but really lets the hops shine through. Hop flavor lingers on the palette. Light to medium bodied brew, with a drying hop bite. Overall, a really nice IPA quite similar to their famous Head Hunter, with perhaps a slightly bigger aroma and more earthy flavor.

"Our Brewers like to celebrate hop innovation through experimentation. This experimental IPA is brewed with the trial hop HBC342 which packs this beer with a blast of grapefruit, pineapple and sweet watermelon."

12oz bottle, draught-only beer graciously given to me by Glenn and Geoff

A - Short-lived wispy white head dissipates to a ring and very thin floating film. The beer is ever so lightly hazy, bright gold in color.

S - Pungent citrus: candied orange, apricot and pineapple heavy. Subtle bits of pine, onion and floral hops, but this is pretty straight-forward citrusy.

T - Assertive bitterness right off the bat, bringing along waves of citrus hop character...heavy with orange and pineapple. Aftertaste brings in some Summit-like onion with a touch of wet pine.

M - Medium, slightly slick body is washed away clean by an insanely dry finish. Moderate carbonation holds up the bitterness (70IBU) nicely.

O - Another slam dunk hop-forward beer by this brewery. An interesting hop which I will have to locate and find some use for myself. Spoiled having this regional brewery spitting out IPA's that can beat most from either coast.
