On tap in a snifter at 101 Beer Kitchen on 4/15/13

Cognac brown with an 1/8th inch head. Sporadic, soapy retention with a little bit of drippy lace.

The aroma is simple and nice. Sugary dark fruits with a nod toward the raisins. It's quite pollen-heavy too; the rosemary fits right in. The taste is full, floral and sugary. However, it is not overly sweet. Heavy on the raisins with a perfect blend of rosemary. Hints of chocolate and a touch of bubblegum-like yeast. The feel is perhaps the best aspect of the beer - medium-full body with perfect carbonation (which pairs up flawlessly with the sugars). I'm a fussy guy on Belgian (style) Dark Ales and carbonation. Put 'em together and I've seldom, if ever, been pleased. This is really impressive though.

This Fathead's/Columbus collaboration ale was brewed for Fathead's Headstrong Strong Ale Fest (March 22-23, 2013). It's a Belgian-style strong dark ale with caramelized golden raisins and rosemary. I had it on draft at Lizardville in Bedford Heights, OH, served in a 12 oz tulip.

Very dark, practically black, with little to no head. Enticing, spicy aroma--the Belgian yeast is partially responsible here, but there is also something else, difficult to identify at first. Taste--the raisins and rosemary are definitely detectable, and well-integrated. Sweet, but not overly so, and the spicy finish is just right. Mouthfeel is slightly syrupy. In a blind tasting this might pass for an authentic Belgian. Overall, very good--I recommend it.
