Bought at Jumbo in Almada, 330 ml Bottle. Best served before 04-12-2008. Reviewed at home under Strong artificial light. Served in a gobblet at recommended temperature (8 ºC). Poured on 19-10-2008.
Presentation: Extremely appealing overall design with a Gold / Red / Earth tones color schematic and several Medieval / Sacred Art like elements, such as the Coat of arms framed on a Church-vault like shape. Traditionally shaped brown beer bottle.
Appearance: Poured a Red / Brown (about 13-14 on the Lovibond) murky brew with a two finger tan head that quickly fades into a thin cap (which holds for the rest of the experience). Alot of floaties. Perceived effervescence is low. Decent lacing.
Aroma: The nose is of medium strength and complex. Evident Caramel and Belgian candy sugar, plums / raisins and Yeast like spiciness.
Taste: Again, very straightforward Caramel, Belgian candy sugar and Plums / raisins notes, with chocolate malt and roasted malt undertones. Very noticeable Yeast 'sting'. Lasting malty sweetness and yeast bitterness. Low hop bitterness. Decently Balanced in taste overall.
Palate: Medium to Full body with Medium to low carbonation. Milky / tart like texture. Noticeable Alcohol, but not off putting.
Drinkability: Good drinkability considering the ABV, well balanced, and none of the aroma / taste elements are overwhelming or off-putting.
On a final note: Overall, a decent Dubbel albeit not a prototypical one, as it lacks a more subtle and sober aroma and taste profile of nuts and chocolate. Dark fruits aroma and taste should be less dominating of the overall beer character. Reminds me of Verboden Vrucht / Fruit Defendu. Not overly impressed, will not be seeking this in the near future.

From a bottle into a chalice, at about cellar temperature.
It's head is kind of non-existent, with even an aggressive pour making just a tiny amount of beige fizz which settles to a ring quickly. However, it's got a pretty copper-like reddish brown body in which I can view carbonation bubbles and a lot of nice sediment, which becomes a really thick CLOUD of sediment once I pour out the last of the beer.
To me it smells like caramel, cherries, maple, and ripe apples and bananas.
It also tastes of tart green apples and ripe bananas to an extent. The finish is bready with a bit of dry hoppiness.
The carbonation is expectedly high, and the body feels kinda medium.
Not a mind-blowing Belgian ale, but nevertheless a really solid one. I'm definitely glad I got to try it.
