a find.. a bottle from 1998 "lost" at this store in their basement for eons.. $9.99 @ oaktree buyrite, edison, nj (they have a couple more bottles and the same "old" dubbel as well... and a couple of old maresdous also).
the bottle says best before "05 02 03" but this should hold up...
lively cork, jumped off the bottle it has been protecting for 8 years, orange muddy hue, one full finger of head, medium to small bubbles stay afloat and persist, lacing is firm like a sheet of sea foam rolling in unison off the shore, leaving behind a traceof the wetness that was once there, and it leaves a line at the top of the lace crest as well, the carbonation is still quite active, this looks great.
fruity walnuts, dried apricots, a caramel candy bar (like a twix sans the chocolate), a hair of the alcohol peeps through, butterscotch, zero funk odor detected except for a faint "dry" smell, like grass perhaps but no outright belgian assfunk. I could smell this all day and not be able to put my finger on everything that is going on in this one.
smooth and velvety, like drinking old silky wood left in your garage soaked in mild fruits like apricot or peach, sweet but barely, it leaves the mouth dry, the mouthfeel is fantastic, creamy and just thick enough, this has really mellowed out, maybe almost too mellow in the flavor? later down the glass the yeast seems more assertive, even more woody and drying but still with that subtle sweetness balancing it out. The ABV is unnoticed except in the stomach which gets a nice little warming buzz from this brew. This is way way wayyy too damn easy to drink, and not sip, this just flies out of the glass into your mouth. a very strange dry almost "ash" tasting aftertaste seems to linger but it isnt unpleasant, it makes you yearn for another sip...
if you see an 8 year old bottle pick it up ! I'll be damned if 1 foot of snow is stopping me from running out tommorow and grabbing up one more of these to share with friends soon... I have to say I was very surprised by this one, I half expected it to be skunk city...

The appearance is light golden amber with loads of carbonation and a dig head that dissipates Cloudy.
The smell is of white bread, banana and yeast. A very classic Belgian Triple aroma.
The taste is quite boozy. I detect hints of honey and there is a dry spicy finish. It is a fairly mild but well refined flavour.
The mouthfeel is very creamy and also well carbonated.
Overall, this a very good Triple.
My mark out of one hundred is 90.
