Affligem Tripel starts off with many of the usual tripel aromas--orange, coriander, banana, pear, apple--but adds to them a champagne-like white grape note, all of which rests lightly over biscuity toasted grains. The end result smells much like a bowl full of Grape Nuts, laden with freshly-sliced peaches.

On the tongue, the brew is quite fruity, with orange, banana, apple, and apricot rising quickly to the surface. Hints of spice--coriander, clove, pepper, nutmeg--speckle the tongue, nipping lightly at the tastebuds. A good layer of toasted grains lies beneath, but is largely hidden by the fruity sugars. Hops are barely distinguishable, existing only as a counterbalancing buzz. A slight alcohol tinge hums quietly in the background, and becomes slightly too much the center of attention in the aftertaste, which is otherwise merely a continuation of the sugars. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is high--slightly too high, in fact, making this brew feel champagne-like on the soft palate.

Overall, the flavors in here are good, but the brew lacks a certain vivacity and uniqueness that would set it apart from its competitors, and the sugary flavors tend to fade during subsequent sips.

Pours out a nice dark orange in color with a finger white head that dissipated really quick with not lacing, Smell is really sweet that I can only assume is brown Belgian candy sugar. Really not much going on in the nose except real sweetness, Taste is more complex with the Belgian candy sugar, a little tiny bit of booze, and certainly some brown sugar to go with it as well. Mouthfeel is medium thick which is nice for the style. Honestly I don't like the beer as much as the last time I drank it as it just isn't as complex as I would have hoped. this is a great beer but just needs some balance,

Poured from a 750ml into a pint glass on this cold December night.

Appearance - Light golden color with 2 inch collar of foam. Significant lacing on left on the glass.

Smell - Very subtle. Hints of Belgian spices/yeast, sweet, and slight aroma of alcohol.

Taste - Apple, banana, and pepper.

Mouthfeel - Medium body and carbonation.

Overall - Not the best Tripel that I have had, but this is a good beer, decent value, and relatively easy to locate. You could do a lot worse.
