Appearance: Cloudy gold, fluffy white head with good retention.

Aroma: Herbal, light fruity esters

Flavor: Spicy, pepper, lemongrass, light fruit, low sweetness, low to moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, effervescent, drying.

Overall: Light and refreshing Saison. Very effervescent. Fruity esters and spiciness accent flavor and aromas. Brewery states they use 4 different hops, would love to know which ones. It has some unique, hard to pin down aromas and flavors.

Feb. 2015: Shared 750 ml bottle at local tasting. Clear pale golden first, cloudy with floaties in my glass (end of bottle). Moderate white head. Nice spicy and herbal aroma, "typical saison". Spicy and yeasty flavour, fairly well hopped.

Found this copy at Whole Foods, Lincoln Park Chicago. Given that 2018 was the last year that had more than three BA reviews and given that J-J IV's importer Shelton Brothers (now sadly deceased) had a checkered relations with Illinois' ABV, this saison could have been bottled 4 or 5 years ago. (There is no date on the bottle.)

However for whatever this copy IV lacks in freshness, it makes up for that with fullness (if I use my imagination.) Still some decent protein swirls. Both fruity and spicy in the nose (a combo indicating a quality Belgian yeast.) Tastes are balanced. Absolutely a good pairing with my world-famous ratatouille.

Listed in the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die", the reviewer makes a good case for IV being included (V also was included.) The reviewer indicates that despite being marketing heavies for the Yakima Chief hop as their day job, they keep restrained use of hops in IV, relying on the hop aroma and restraining the bitterness; producing a clean taste for a Belgian ale and avoiding the tendency for yeasty fruits.

Going on their website (and being slowed down by having to read French), I conclude that Braisserie J-J probably still has limited production. But they give tours, so I will put them at the bottom of my B list for a list. Nonetheless, I am glad to find a copy here in the Midwest... some 7 years after I first tasted IV.

Quite Hazy, slightly amber.

Nose on orchard fruits. A little bit of spiciness but not that much.

Malty and yeasty mostly.

The mouthfeel is not too thin and with a low to moderate carbonation.

An okay saison

Bright saison with dry cracker malts, honey and citrus sweetness, and earthy herbal bitterness. Has hints of spices and pepper on the nose. Feel is smooth yet crisp. Rides up the palate during the taste

Not sure how old this bottle is - it's been sitting in my fridge for awhile after being gifted to me by a friend who received it from the Shelton Brothers themselves. Last review here is well over a year ago, so I'm guessing this is not a youngster.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Palm tulip. Body is straw-yellow/light golden with a half-finger of bright white head.

S: Modest yeastiness, some florally scents and ripe fruits - think white grapes, primarily.

T: Surprisingly clean - white grape skins, modest grainy foundation and a touch of lemony bitterness at the finish. Well-balanced.

M: Light in heft, solid active carbonation - feels like a Saison should, notwithstanding all the time in the bottle.

O: Quite good. Pleasantly surprised.

Golden blonde with lots of effervescent bubbles floating up to the 1/2 finger of head.

Clean aroma with pepper, honey, and belgian candi sugar.

Flavor is clean as well with lots of nice peppery notes, coriander, honey, pale malts, and a finish of pepper and lemon.

Feel is very carbonated, with a nice dry saison finish.

Dead on accurate Saison with class and a little sweetness. Highly recommended.
