Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #32 (Sep 2009):

A tall, bubbly froth leads quickly to a thin lacing as the head dissipates; crystal-clear amber color. Grainy, sweet aroma with some cooked veggie and creamed corn in the back of the nose. Smooth with a creamy, moderately sized body. Bit of carbonic twang above the malt and hops; maltiness is grainy with a grassy and almost animal-feed-like character. This beer screams "EURO LAGER!" Hops just come across with some bitterness and a faded herbal flavor. Finishes with a faint caramel note before things go a tad dry.

In a pinch, this beer works for a quick lunch beer. While there is nothing too complex here, it does stay drinkable, even for a beer that is brewed with additions of glucose, corn, caramel and ascorbic acid. Come on, they are not German!

Clear and bright amber beer with a massive froth of a creamy ass head that sticks and stays. Metallic in the nose with wet paper aromas -- why me?

Wet paper carries over to the flavour, which leads me to believe that my sample is tainted with some minor oxidation. Sucks, but we move on ... malt flavours are grainy, barely sweet, but there's some fruity flavours that attempt to meld with the citric hop flavours that seems a bit contrived. Again, I'm disappointed. Mouthfeel is smooth-ish, body is light. Finish is clean with some residual grain flavours and a coarse leftovers on the palate.

There's too many beers in the world to waste your time with this one. Cool flip-top ceramic bottle though, but unfortunately that does not make a beer.

Presentation: 22 oz brown flip top with raised glass designs. No freshness date.

Appearance: Crystal clear tawny amber with a thick rocky head that holds up like a champ all the way down to the bottom of the glass.

Smell: Subtle hoppy twang and lots of sweet grain in the nose with hints of apple peel and caramel.

Taste: Moderately bodied with a crisp biting carbonation that helps emphasize the hop bitterness. Clean palate and on the dry side. Mild cidery apple twang and a mouthful of clean grain are the forefront of this brew. Hops linger with the amongst the apple like fruitiness far into the finish.

Notes: A good brew to wash down nearly any kind of cuisine or even to drink as a session brew. A flavourful lager to experience, glad I had a chance to. Flavours are level and well formed, give this one a try.

Got this one in France while on vacation last summer.

From a 65cl swing-top bottle into a mug.

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, fluffy white head with great retention. Fades slowly to a good cap leaving some sticky lacing to the sides of the mug. Clear amber yellow with medium carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving some lacing down the glass. Good looking for the style.

SMELL: Caramel notes, toasted grain, grainy bread aromas with some floral and grassy hops in there.

TASTE: Follows the nose nicely. Caramel and toasted malts up front with some nice floral hop bitterness at the swallow. A big finish or bready sweetness, honey and caramel flavors, bitter floral hops and some grassy notes. Decently flavorful and enjoyable.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, smooth going down and finishes dry. Good feel.

OVERALL: I guess it's the anti-lager syndrome on this site, but this is a solid pale lager. No question about that. The nose and flavor were plenty enjoyable and well balanced, and the look was rather appealing as well. A good lager worth checking out if you're in France.
