As a resident of Texas, our beer scene isn't quite up to the level of Colorado...so, please look at this review through the eyes of someone who doesn't have access to as many great beers as other people in other states. That being said, Star Liquors in Durango is one of the best stores I've ever had the honor in which to shop. The store is laid out quite intelligently, thanks to the work of the Beer Manager Oliver (Megaoli here on BA). A great wall of over 150 different 12 oz. singles is toward the back. Right next to that is an aisle of beers all suitable for cellaring - again, intelligent layout. The wall of cold cases features many local Colorado beers - many of which I have not found anywhere else in Colorado...not anywhere else in Durango, not Colorado Springs, not Denver, NOWHERE! With that in mind, Oliver doesn't just carry anything. Through a few nice conversations with him, I found out that there are a few local breweries he refuses to carry, due to inconsistencies in their offerings. That level of responsibility and care is sadly becoming a rarity. As a final note, here are some of the great (and, to me, hard to find) breweries/beers I got on my most recent trip to Durango and Star Liquors:
Russian River (Pliny!)
Alaskan
Lost Abbey (Angel's Share!)
1809 Berlinerweiss
Black Butte XXIII

Summary: A small town gem with a small city selection. Great customer service.
I needed a place to pick up some local beers and spirits not available in Austin. Durango is small (15,000 residents) so I wasn't expecting much. Star Liquors had two very favorable reviews, so I thought I'd give it a try. Much to my pleasure, not only did they have a sizable selection of Colorado beers and liquor, but they sold singles, making it much easier to try one of everything I can't get a hold of. Oliver, the resident beer expert, was everything he was billed to be in the previous post. Expert and broad knowledge of what was available, personal experience tasting the merchandise, enthusiasm for his trade. Could have spent much more time and money there, but I had to get on the road back home. While I have been in stores with a larger selection, they have always been in cities considerably larger. The one minor drawback was that the prices were a bit higher than comparable big city stores (but very reasonable for the area). The quality and service, however, would keep me coming back regardless of where it was located.

OK so this is a long distance review. I live in Texas & a friend was in Durango to do some hunting. I called Star Liquors before opening & got to talk to Oliver. Oliver is the Beer Guy at the store. He boxed up a few of the Ska's & Durango's that I do not get in Texas. He made a few suggestions & offer me the last two 2009 Stone VE in the store, I am very grateful.
From what I had given my buddy I was limited to how much I could get. But what I did get I am very pleased.
If you are going to go to the 4-corners or going to ski stop in & say hi to Oliver, he knows all about the local brews and what are the special can't miss beers.
