Acquired via trade from Donkster46 so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a large dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains piney hops, fruity citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty malt character. Then some sweet flavors of caramel and citrus come in. The hops presence is strong but not over-powering and provides a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes quite easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, this is a very nice IPA worth pounding down for whole evening.

Pours essentially the quale of what a beer supposedly looks like. Saturated amber with just a hint of ruby/orange that fades to a pale straw yellow at the edges. Silky white head lingers over the top like lazy stratocumulus, leaving good lacing down the sides as I drink.

The aroma is an inviting blend of bready/caramel malts, and hops that are sweet and juicy and a hint of spicy.

While the aroma gave the impression of nectar/tropical fruits/sweet hops while the taste starts with an abrupt, bracingly bitter note. Piney, green bitter. Less nectar, more sap. There's some decent carbonation and enough of a body to support it, but personally I prefer a bit more structural and flavour support. The rich depth promised on the nose fails to manifest, with a thinner bread-bordering-on-watercracker malt instead of the warm caramel. The finish is dry and intensely bitter, and while you can find the hints of juicy fruits and citrus if you look, they are overshadowed by the acerbic piney elements.
All in all I'm glad to have picked up the six pack, and I can feel proud it came from my region, but I would not personally hold it up as a 'best of' for either the style or the region. Still and all, very drinkable, and there's nothing wrong with a solid respectability, right?

Golden - Amber appearance. Slight fresh grapefruit / citrus, hoppy bread smell. Pours good with a decent one inch head. After the first couple mouthful left minimal lacing. Finishes very clean, with tastes of malt and bread. Flavors seemed to just disappear.

I heard they changed the recipe on this one. I don't remember trying this in the bottle before but now there are cans out there and it's worth picking up if you see it. It's not as hop forward as some other NW IPAs and the malt isn't assertive either but it really comes together nicely for a thirst quenching brew.

Spun tangerine gold color with tiny 1 mm lace edging that lasts. Smell - little if any to discern. Body: medium-heavy smooth and creamy but ample carbonation keeps hop bite. As for the hops -- perfectly balanced. Not too floral or estery or vegetal - I would say mellow vegetal tastes - hay, chamomile, dark leafy green. I've decided that the 3 grid is my go-to PNW IPA. It's just so good that I could do serious damage to the current wholesale stock! I'd have to taste Boundary Bay IPA and the 3 Grid side by side to decide which PNW trumps.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy medium golden amber with a two finger off-white head that dissipates to a thick cap leaving light lacing. Aroma of tropical fruit, citrus hops, mild pine and mild bready malt. Flavor is piney and citrus hops, biscuit malt, finishes with lots of pine and citrus hop bitterness. Medium bodied. The malt takes a backseat to the hops, but gives sufficient support. I couldn't help wishing for a bit more malt to preserve the tropical fruit components in the aroma, which would have made this more balanced for me, although I do lean more towards malty IPAs. Nice hop bill and well balanced, a well made IPA now available in cans.

This is not something I would normally consider an IPA. . . The citrus notes do set it apart in its own way, but I expect more of that delicious bitter content that is not overridden by the fruit flavor. My cohort who is tasting this with me says he appreciates the slight sediment you get in the slightly murky orange color. I however am not a big fan of sediment, and while this is slightly off-putting, it is not what I consider a total deal breaker. The sediment plus the overly citrus punch for an IPA leads to the lower grades for Taste+Appearance. . . It is not a bad IPA, but not something I would seek out again. . .

Served from a 22oz bottle

Has a nice golden almost light copper color, with a thick head.

Very subtle nose. Slight grassy and citrus smell. Not overwhelming

Has a very citrusy, weedy taste. None of which are very overpowering. Nice subtle flavors that emerge throughout the beer. Easy everyday drinker.

Overall this is a solid IPA, would like to try other types from Schooner, but for a first sample, I expect good things from the rest of the line
