22oz bottle purchased at 99 Bottles in Federal Way, Washington, for $5. No obvious freshness date, but the guy at 99 Bottles said it’s only recently begun to be bottled, so age should (hopefully) not be an issue.

Poured into a Budge Bros. pint glass, this was a slightly chill-hazed copper-amber color, with a creamy, beige head that dropped down after a few minutes but not before leaving a sticky band of lace around the sides of the glass.

Piney, peppery and grapefruity in the nose, in that order.

Similar to the aroma, that taste was of piney, spicy, citrusy hop flavors, with a minor, mineralish taste midway through. Finishes on a bone-dry note.

Medium bodied, with a drier mouthfeel than most IPAs.

I don’t get the hype. Don’t get me wrong – it’s good., but the build up this has gotten from west-side BAs seems overdone. Maybe it’s just an off-bottle, possible since they’ve only recently begun bottling. I’ll give it another shot next time I see it, and will hopefully be able to have it on tap at some point.

Beautiful clear semi-dark copper appearance. Moderate head. Served at the brewery.
Very well balanced with just the right amount of bitterness expected from an IPA.
My previous gold standard for local IPA was Lucille IPA from Georgetown brewery. Trickster is very close in all respects - both winners - with a slight edge to Trickster.
Grabbed a growler to go.
edit: After several return visits, I reiterate my impression that this is a great IPA. A bit pricey though at $12 a growler fill. No one else around here asks that much. That is the only disappointing thing about this beer.

Good appearance, amber. Great aroma, I smell cascade, chinook and columbus? Maybe some simcoe dry hopping. Not really in the taste profile though.

Very bitter beer. But enjoyable. Tasted a little more alcohol than I would have preferred to feel, but negated somewhat by the bitterness. Or exacerbated, I dunno. They're both there, I enjoyed the beer, the bitterness just never lets go on this one.

Had on tap at Latona, review from notes.

A: Pours a clear copper color with a small off-white head on top. Retention as average, but some nice lacing was left behind on the glass.

S: As expected, a vibrant/fresh hoppy aroma. Lots of citrus, pineapple, and a bit of zest. The malt comes through as a grainy aroma. Light pine at the end.

T: Similar to the aroma. Nice citrus up front, rather strong - grapefruit, pineapple, orange, and a little zest. Grainy malt with a little caramel.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Has a nice bitter finish.

O: A very nice IPA. Glad I can usually find on tap somewhere in the city.

on-tap @ the taproom; enjoyed after a niner on rattlesnake mountain

appearance: served in a pretty sharp branded 20oz pint, light orange-copper body, nice creamy froth

smell: fresh citrus, toasted malt, lemon rind

taste: refreshing post-hike beer - quite well balanced, if balance is your thing. juicy citrus hops - grapefruit and tangerine. biscuit malts, toasted grain, caramel, nutty.

mouthfeel: moderate-light bitterness, refreshing

overall: good ipa - prefer the wisdom seeker

Picked up a growler (from the Black Raven Tap Room in Redmond, WA)...I used my Georgetown (Seattle, WA) growler and poured into my Deschutes (Bend, OR) cone pint glass...

A: Mostly clear brassy hue…Leaves behind some fluffy rings of lacing...

S: Mint, marmalade, faint caramel, ripe pear, Orange citrus, lemon juice, light florals and grass...
T: Oh my...I think I've died and gone to heaven... Very smooth, deep crispness, hop bitterness… Upfront there is pineapple… lemon juice followed by leafy, dried grass, lightly toasted bread, clean caramel notes mid-palate. Finishes with pine and grassy floral…a hoppy/pine finishes, not dry but begging for you to have more!!!

M: On the fuller side of medium bodied, juicy, crisp and bitter...pretty well balanced...

O: I've had this one a couple of time in the past year (or so) at the Black Raven Tasting/Taproom, but never got around to reviewing...I'm suprised...Very clean, Very drinkable. Just an outstanding American IPA all around… pretty much nailed it with this one!...I'm so glad I only live 15 mins. from the Taproom!!...Chasin' Cheers :~)

Glowing mandarin infused copper. Golden peach edges. Big thick dense offwhite head with good retention. Lots of oils. Some rock formation lacing builds up down the sides of the glass. A real looker.

Grapefruit, tropical fruit, apricot, floral, resins. Slightly toasty and caramel beneath the bountiful hops.

Rush of juicy hops: tropical fruit, grapefruit, citrus, floral. Touch of caramel and toast with apricot jam. Followed by a big resinous bitter grapefruit hop bite. A touch of vanilla as it warms.

Sticky and drying. med body. steady medium carbonation. refreshing.

Awesome hoppy standard IPA. Great hop flavors. Could drink this one all night. One of the hoppiest and tastiest IPAs out there. Big fan of what Black Raven is doing.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber, clear with light constant carbonation and a half finger slightly off-white head with excellent retention and lacing. Nice aroma (I wish "aromatic" wasn't redundant here) of biscuit malt and piney and citrus hops. Flavor follows, with citrus and mildly piney and floral hops, biscuit malt and light pear and sweet citrus juice. Finishes with citrus rind and the kind of resiny, complex hop flavors and bitterness that I hope for in an IPA. Body is at the high end of medium with a nice moderate creaminess, more than expected. An overall nicely balanced and aromatic IPA with a great mouth feel. I’m glad I finally got to try this regional classic. This is the third absolutely wonderful IPA I've had from this brewery (with Wisdom Seeker, Beak Tweaker (awesome)). Great brewery.

Had on tap at their taproom in Redmond.

Appearance: Darkish IPA...almost reddish gold in color. Very nice head with average persistence and nice lacing.

Smell: Hops. Piney and resin probably attributed to the simcoe and chinook hops. I love this aroma.

Flavor: Clean hop bitterness. Lots of citrus hops and a bit more earthy grassy varieties. Maybe a touch off balance for an IPA this big (could use a bit more residual sweetness). Alcohol is noticeable, but not hot.

Mouthfeel: At 7.8% ABV I expected maybe more body. Pretty dry considering the ABV. Nice bitter finish.

Drinkability: The more I drank, the more this reminded me of being PTE's smaller sibling. Pretty tasty.

On tap at Collins Pub.

The beer pours an orange peach color with good head retention and lacing. The beer has a very impressive IPA nose, showcasing a considerable amount of orange citrus, lime and light sweet malt. The flavors replicate the nose pretty closely, with an impressive amount of bitterness on the finish. While the beer is a bit sweeter than I normally expect from a NW IPA, it still leans to the dry side, with a fairly dry, bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with an enjoyable bitter/hoppy finish. The beer struck me as just a bit undercarbonated, which in this case seemed to give it a somewhat smoother mouthfeel. Drinkability is pretty good, though I got a touch of alcoholic heat on the finish. In any event, I thought this was otherwise a very solid, easy to enjoy IPA.

I grabbed a growler from the Black Raven. Pours a darker than expected orange with a fluffy creamy head. Smell is pine, floral and malty. Taste is a nice hop/malt balance. Not a hop bomb, but that is ok. Good body and carboration. Overall a nice balanced ipa.

Pint glass @ Ray's Cafe, Seattle.

Pours a clear copper w/ a thin white head, leaves behind plenty of lace.

Aroma is decidedly hoppy w/ equal parts citrus, pine, and floral notes.

Taste follows nose. Malt bill is dry and biscuity, provides just enough body to showcase the resinous hops. Plenty of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is typical of a good IPA. Clean and refreshing.

Overall a very tasty IPA, well-crafted and very drinkable.

Appearance: Arrives with a nice head capping the amber liquid; sheets of lace drape the glass

Smell: Hop juice aromatics, with all the West Coast floral and citrus character

Taste: The hop juice leaps onto the palate, with ruby red grapefruit and a biscuity malt character; floral citrus builds into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Just about as good as it gets from the West Coast IPA style

Trickster is a clear orange-amber with a thin tan head with decent lacing. Aroma is mostly of grapefruit with a little dampness. Strong grapefruit and resin hops are quickly offset by a cloying malty sweetness. A slightly sticky but robust mouthfeel finishes with a good hop linger that doesn't stay too long.

This is an interesting IPA. I can see how it knocked off Boundary Bay's IPA for house choice. The flavors are very similar but the trickster is more balanced with the hops not sticking to you too much. The hops are not overpowering but definitely predominant and is much easier to drink. I love the Boundary Bay IPA with all it's hop forwardness but this is a great balanced IPA that I could drink all night.

Pours a golden orange with a nice bit of white head. Smells very piney and hoppy. A nice interesting aroma profile. tastes piney and bitter. The hoprofile is solid but a bit disjointed from the malt backbone. Overall slid but nothing crazy good. Glad to have tried this

On draught at the Collins Pub, Trickster IPA is pale orange with an off-white head that leaves scattered lace.

Smell is bright citrus, lime hops, a little resin, and loads of bread dough.

Taste is similar, huge punch of citrus hops, sweetened by the malt, but tempered by a firm bitterness.

Mouthfeel is on the dry side, medium light bodied.

Drinkability is pretty good. I've heard nothing but fantastic things about Black Raven, so I'm guessing I was expecting to be blown away. Above average, but with a tap list I can't keep up with, I'm not ordering it again, at least during this trip.

This is an amazing IPA at a great price. 12 dollars for a growler full. Wonderful brewery that needs to start bottling and distributing more. Still waiting to try the Wisdom Seeker Double IPA but it is alwyas sold out quickly when it comes out once a year.

Into a tulip from a 22 oz. bomber muled from Seattle (thanks Sister!)

A: 2-3 finger head that sticks around for quite a while; amber with some depth of color and slightly hazy
S: crystal and rich german malts; hops are a nice combination...some pine, some kind of heavier and slightly dank citrus.
T: follows the nose; substantial malty backbone balancing the nice piney and slightly citric hops. A little extra bittersweet spicy kick at the end. Nothing too fancy, but it got better and better as I went...kind of an old school IPA to me, but done very well and very satisfying.
M: medium carbonation, nice full body, dry on the end

Overall: Good. Looking forward to trying more from these guys.

A: Poured a nice golden orange with a dirty white head

S: Nose is dry with plenty of hops, grass, floral, citrus and a very hidden pine element

T: Taste follows nose very well. It lies on the dry side, very little hop oils. Floral, grass, citrus and subdued pine notes.

M: Very nice and crisp, lighter to medium bodied

D: Damn good. Amazing single IPA, amazing!
