Review from 11/2010 notes. Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a dark reddish amber, looks like a cola. Nice brown head leaves lacing. Light sweet malt with a faint spicy aroma. Nice medium body. Malty with a chocolate flavor, some toasty malts. Mild middle and malty with slight hops finish. Subdued but enjoyable. Brought home in a plastic container which did not completely retain full carbonation, but the beer still produced a nice mild head.

draft at uber tavern

a: snifter serving, deep amber-brown in color, floating an off-white head with good retention

s: big malty nose - mostly toffee with some undertones of cocoa and caramel, dark fruits, rich, hardly hopped, smells nice enough

m: moderate bodied with smooth carbonation, malt thickness

t: fairly aligned with the nose - fully malted with buttery toffee and caramel, subtle touches of fruit, slight chocolate, sweet and lingering

o: an enjoyable scotch ale with dense, tasty malt flavors

16oz on tap in a shaker pint glass at the Pine Box, Seattle WA.

Appearance: Clear deep coppery red. Thin light tan head. Plenty of fine persistent lacing.

Smell: Not very much. A little bit metallic when I first got it. Some hints of something clean & floral with some underlying sweetness later. The sweetness came out more as the beer warmed up but still faint.

Taste: Good malt flavor, but not overly sweet. Transitions from toasted malt and a hint of toffee to a solid bitter finish. Fairly hoppy, but not exceedingly aggressive. Still, more hoppy than most scotch ales/wee heavy beers I've had. The hop finish was part pine, part herbal, part woody. The bitterness subsided a bit as the beer warmed up.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation - a little spicy on the tongue. Sticky on the teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: An interestingly hoppy take on a scotch ale. I was not expecting that much of a bitter finish, but it works. A good full flavor beer, but a bit different for the style. One was enough though - I'm not feeling like I need to have another.

On tap at Brouwer's the other night.

The beer pours a mahogany brown amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is pretty malty and sweet, though I get some underlying butterscotch and light peat as well. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this malty sweet beer, though there's a touch more smoke and cherry on on the palate than I got on the nose. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, malty sweet finish. Drinkabilty isn't bad, though a bit more complexity and less sweetness would have been nice. Not sure this is something I'd want to order again.

I had Second Sight poured from a fresh growler into a standard pint glass on the evening of May 23, 2012.

Appearance: Second Sight pours dark amber with a sturdy, light tan head and very solid carbonation.

Smell: The aroma is dominated by caramel and buttery toffee smells that didn’t seem to change at all as the beer sat.

Taste: The taste is even more caramel-centric than the aroma at first, moving into a nutty and malty sweetness, and finishing with faint smoke and woodiness.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is definitely a bit sappy but, overall, I liked the heft and smoothness. I also appreciated that the carbonation stuck around to mediate the thickness and sweetness. The complexity of this beer, and its big 7.2% ABV character, really comes out in the mouthfeel.

Overall: Second Sight is probably my favorite year-round offering from Black Raven. It might be too sweet for some but, and this may sound like odd praise, I find it avoids many of the pitfalls lesser Scotch Ales fall victim to. Second Sight isn’t too peaty, too smoky, too sweet, or, as is very often the case, too simplistic. I look forward to trying Splinters, the barrel-aged version of this great beer.
