Clear golden amber in the wine glass. A quick flash of bubbles and a wispy mustache of foam. Strange musty odor, though eventually some citrus oils emerge. Prickly carbonation plus the acidic and rather hot mouthfeel.

The malt is pretty faint and doesn't make much of an impression. Just a slight sweetness and maybe a crackery sensation. The first taste is indeed rosemary. That's when I looked at the label to see this is actually brewed with citrus. The aftertaste is an intruiguing lime peel taste with a hint of citron. The rye does add a llittle spiciness which accentuates the hot peel and pith on the lips

This is an interesting reach into flavors that may not be very suited to beers. I blame Stone for their grapefruit concoction. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at QFC Market off East 45th St. in Seattle.

22 oz bottle poured into stemless wine glass - bottle dated Feb 18 2014

A: golden, slightly hazy appearance. small, cotton white head. not much retention.

S: butter??? i am getting a buttery smell with minor notes of citrus and hops...strange.

T: okay, this is going to sound crazy but i am getting a rosemary, olive oil taste with that buttery taste I was smelling, almost like what i would taste with a lavash bread at a fancy restaurant...i guess you could call the rosemary taste piney but very unique and not like other ipas i have had that i would describe as piney.

M: heavier mouthfeel than the color or style would imply but in line with a beer that has strong butter smell/taste. pretty heavy.

O: not at all what i was expecting...love black raven's trickster IPA and I generally enjoy IPAs with lots of citrus so i had very high hopes for this one...didnt meet those expectations and was just an odd beer all around. might have to try another time to see if i just got a bad bottle but definitely not going to make this a regular in my IPA lineup.

Great golden color on the darker end and a good clear base. As the name implies has a strong, delicious citrus aroma and first initial taste. Actually smoother than you might think with such a strong citrus profile and rather sweet too. Doesn't linger on the tongue and finishes clean. Overall pretty tasty offering from BR once again.

22 ounce bottle, poured into a tulip. Bottle dated Jan 20, 2014, so this is quite fresh, and obviously not a summer seasonal, as I guess it was first characterized.

Citrus and hops, that's the recipe here, and that's the beer. The citrus presence is much more pronounced than in most other IPAs, although this does remind me of the very good Inversion from Deschutes. If you like that one, you'll like this one.

There's a lot of carbonation right at the beginning, which shows in the champagne like bubbles I got, and also in the mouth. Then there's a lot of citrusy aroma and taste throughout, and a moderate amount of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Fairly full mouthfeel. Just a bit sweet. Tons of flavor!

The Black Raven brewers have another outstanding beer ... in my book, they're just a consistently great brewery.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. Bottle is dated 16 October 2013, so it's pretty fresh.

Appearance: rich golden hue with a crystal-clear body and a strong effervescence. head is a thick finger of frothy white foam. Quite attractive.

Smell: lightly sweet with a strong citrus hop element. It's definitely an accurately-named beer.

Taste: big citrus and earthy hop flavors atop a slightly toasty, biscuity malt base. Bitterness is quite strong toward the end. Not bad, but I feel like it lacks finesse.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a huge, well-integrated carbonation. Really surprising for the style. The burst of mouth-filling creaminess is quite satisfying!

Overall: a decent citrusy-earthy IPA with a really surprising creaminess. Good, but being spoiled for choice in this category, I probably won't be returning to it.

This had some nice aromas of citrus and minerals...pretty subtle nose. The palate was unique in that despite its citrusy core, this had a savory, creamy mushroom note. Found it really intriguing and definitely seemed more complex than your average APA.

We don't get this beer in Chicago, so thanks to Tom for sending this over to the Windy City. Yummy stuff.
