Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a very dark reddish brown, appearing nearly black in the glass. One finger light brown head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted, rather bready malt with a hint of chocolate. Flavor follows dominated by toasted malt, a bit grassy and hinting of chicory. A lingering hop kick in the finish, which produces an almost espresso like bitterness and flavor; ironic because the label is careful to separate the flavor of schwazbier from heavier stours by its lack of coffee notes. Nevertheless, the finish is pleasant and appropriate for the rest of the beer. Light to medium bodied. An enjoyable schwarzbier, glad I got to try it.

22 oz bottle bought 12 minutes ago at the brewery.
gorgeous, dark as hell with big head of creamy tan foam.
Smell is roasted, but not coffee. sweet and malty, limited bitterness in the nose. very inviting
Taste is good, roast again, a little too sweet and a dark flavor in the back of my palette. bold but approachable. Very, very drinkable. A little thin overall, but expected of the style.
lingering flavors are a little harsh - bitter and sharp - notes of almost sourness.
Overall very good and enjoyable. another good black raven beer.

Bottle opened and enjoyed on 6.9.12.
A - Light cola brown with a nice light tan head with very good retention.
S - A light roasted wheat.
T - Similar to the nose. The roasted notes are strong and nice.
D - Good carbonation and a light body.
O - I liked this one. Roasty and light, but still crisp and refreshing.

I picked up a bottle of Schwartzeit at the brewery Friday after work and had it from a Crate and Barrel “Hops Glass” Saturday June 2, 2012.
Appearance: Schwartzeit is a black lager and, as you’d expect, it is very nearly black in color. There is a light tan head, some lacing, and evidence of significant carbonation..
Smell: The aroma is a dry bready, almost flour-like, malt.
Taste: Schwartzeit’s taste starts with a grainy/cereal flavor that becomes sweet and finishes with a dandelion bitterness.
Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is light and fizzy with none of the mouth-coating attributes of most beers this dark in color.
Overall: I believe Schwartzeit is the first black lager I’ve had, so I cannot comment on it as a representative of the style. It did seem like the bitterness was slightly out of balance with the malt character. That said, I found myself liking this beer a bit more with each sip.

Served on tap at the Black Raven Brewery, tasting room...poured into a German pint glass
A: Thick light brown head. Head died down but stayed about half a finger thick throughout the beer. Decent lacing.
S: Smells of caramel and citrus. Slight floral aroma at the tail end. Also smells a bit grainy.
T: Tastes of citrus and floral hops. There are slight hints of chocolate and toffee. Maybe even some biscuit/bready hints in the beer.
M: A slightly sweet start to the beer with a drier finish. The beer is light on the tongue, sitting on the back. Slightly slick as well.
O: I am glad to try this beer and live so close to the brewery! Not one of my favorite styles, but nonetheless a good beer indeed. I would recommend it to my friends and get it again, especially on a rainy day...which happens often in the Seattle area...so I guess I'll be having it again soon!!! Chasin' Cheers :~)
