Style: Schwarzbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Ghost River Black Magic

Ghost River Black Magic has a pronounced toasted malt flavor that creates a smooth roasted flavor without the bite found in a typical stout or porter. The end result is a dark beer with great flavor and drinkability.

First had poured from 12-oz. bottle into faceted mug. The label pronounces Midnight Magic "a dark beer for people who don't think they like dark beer." Even if not very demanding, the beer easily clears that low bar.

Had on tap while in memphis. Pours a nice dark brown color with a nice head

Very nice and balanced aromas of roasted malts, coffee beans, and some chocolate

This has a real nice feel, but lacking a little bit of body. Balanced with nice flavors of malts and chocolate

This was a real good beer. One of the better southern brews I had on my trip and very enjoyable

Poured from a growler into a snifter.

A: Dark brown with a tan one finger head that dissipates fast. Significant lacing.

S: Roasty malts meets chocolate city.

T: Drinks like a porter, and that's nice. Dark chocolate, toasty malts and a hint of coffee. A bit medicinal on the finish, but not offensive. Robust.

M: Medium with medium, creamy carbonation.

O: Glad I got to try this one. My favorite so far from GR. Would go well with cigars or a chocolate chip cookie.

Poured from a growler into a standard pint glass. Dark brown color with a tan head that dissipates quickly leaving a good amount of lacing. Strong roasted malt smell that made my mouth water. first taste was of dark roasted malts with some hint of coffee. Light body which was kind of unexpected. Roasted cocoa beans linger with a very smooth finish. Very well balanced black ale and thoroughly enjoyable.

Appearance: Arrives looking almost like a stout, with a dark brown color and a tan head that leaves a fairly nice amount of lace

Smell: Chocolate and brown bread

Taste: Chocolatey, up front, with a bready counterpoint that develops by mid-palate; after the swallow, the chocolate flavors linger

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Not a real dark chocolate flavor, but a flavor that has some milk chocolate character; closer to a stout than the typical schwarz - perhaps a function using an ale yeast

They said at the brewery that this is a Scwarzbier brewed with an ale yeast.
A- Pours a black, slightly brown when held to light, with a thick tan head that disappates into something of a foam and leaves wonderful lacing.
S- A bit of hoppiness, and some coffee aromas. Appealing, but mild.
T- Coffee, some dark chocolate, a good amound of balancing hops to it. A very clean and refreshing finish.
M- Smooth carbonation, very smooth. Medium bodied for style. Pretty silky up front and a clean finish.
D- Very drinkable. This is far and away my favorite Ghost River beer, and thus far, it has to be near the top of my Schwarzbier experiences.

I was expecting an heavier stout but was pleasantly surprised by how light this was. I usually expect more sweetness or toasted notes but it was still balanced and a flavorful brew.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into a Pilsner glass.
Darkest cola color with a tight, creamy head.
Smells roasty-toasty sweet. Yum.
Rich, luscious, and perfectly bittersweet. Coffee and caramel. Lingering bitterness on a longish Endtaste. As it warms, marred by a slight English cheesiness.
Delightful and really solid effort overall.
