Tasted April 12th 2011 (from notes)

Poured into a New Belgium snifter

A - Golden, two finger bright white head and some lacing

S - Mild hops, sour yeast smell, light malt and some earth notes. Pretty simple smelling

T - You can taste the hops right away. The malt sets in and than the sour yeast note with some toasted grains mixed in there. Smell = taste

M - Light, fluffy, short finish and leaves you wanting more

D - Drinks like a dream. Budweiser that tastes good. Plus the hops notes are nice. wish I knew the price

Final thought - Fun can, good flavor. I like!

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #53 (June 2011):

Marketed toward tailgating—a pretty narrow market and some tough competition to be up against. Regardless, it’s what’s in the can that matters, right? Clear but some particles are in suspension; lacing is decent enough ... beery ap- pearance. Lemony, almost vinous twang in the nose, with some graininess in there as well. Light slick body, not bone- dry but close. Clean graininess throughout. Lemon bars or cookies come to mind ... not sweet, but zesty. Hint of herbal hops in the drying finish. Easy drinking, even if it is a bit off-kilter.

Yellow beer with a big frothy head. Not much in the aroma department to speak about.

A thirst quenching beer, not much malt or hops, yeast flavor is almost nonexistant, but there is water. Corn if you're into that. Good for tailgating when its hot I guess. But why the price so high? There's nothing to this beer? I mean, even BMC has advertising $$ that figures into why their stuff costs so much, but this?

A decent palate cleanser for a hot day. Had at SDIBF.

Medium or slightly bigger white head settles into a decent lacing above a clear pale golden colored beer.

Lemony and slightly bananaish aroma with some very light black pepper like spices and a definite sour grain weighing in.

A light wet taste of very light sour lemon and even lighter sour grains with just a touch of a hops bittering coming through.

Light almost dryish aftertaste without much taste remaining with this light bodied beer.

Not a lot going on here, I guess that makes it the perfect beerpong beer, but I'd rather have more substance and taste in my beers if I'm going to go to all the trouble involved with tailgating.

12 oz can.

This beer pours a clear medium golden yellow colour, with two fingers of thinly puffy, broadly bubbly dirty white head, which leaves a few sparse instances of waterspout lace around the glass as quickly blows off.

It smells of crisp apple skins, pale grainy malt, a touch of yeasty doughiness, and mildly skunky, weedy hops. The taste is more grainy, rather sweet white malt, apple and pear sauce, and lightly touched by the devil earthy, musty hops.

The bubbles are generally supportive and undemanding, the body medium-light in weight, and more or less smooth, in that adjunct way. It finishes off-dry, with little beyond the smarmy malt and lingering cheap-ass fruitiness.

Another semi-successful attempt at craft mainstream respectability, in that it falls far shorter than normal. Still beyond the horizon, but hey, progress is progress.

I am not a big fan of the Blacktop Blonde from Tailgate....sorry. The beer poured a slightly hazy yellow with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent is tart and stringent. The taste is pretty bland blonde ale. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with subtle carbonation. Overall this is ok....not my fav.

Appearance: Pours bright yellow with a fluffy white head that has fair retention, and leaves a light lacing on the glass. Clarity is brilliant, looks like a german pils.

Smell: Light floral aroma, some soft malty sweetness. You can definitely detect some cascade here.

Taste: Mostly sweet malt, with some breadiness, and some subtle hop character. There's a faint bite from the hops that does a nice job of balancing it out, making this a very, very drinkable beer.

Mouthfeel: Very light, carbonation level is perfect to achieve the thirst quenching effect of a blonde ale.

Overall: I think Blacktop Blonde really fits the style well - extremely drinkable, and has a pleasant aroma and flavor to boot. Perfect for slugging down a hot day and not getting too inebriated (5% abv).

Nice job Tailgate!

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a light golden color wioth a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, some honey appears to be present. Taste is crisp, malts up front, slightly sweet, a touch of hops at the finish. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

Clear golden colored ale with a small white colored head.

Smell is light and fruity with a little malt to it. No hops detected in the scent.

Starts out lite the smell light and fruity with no real bitterness. No real complexity here it is pretty lightly flavored. A little on the sweet side.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall an OK beer. Wouldn't go very far to get one but this is pretty OK.

I CANnot remember who sent this to me, but I have a feeling that it was my dear trading partner, indiapaleale, who did so. If I am inCANrect, please set me straight. I want to spread the blame, I mean, give credit where credit is due accordingly.

From the CAN: "Award Winning Craft Brew!"; "Blacktop Blonde"; "Blacktop Blonde Ale is our homage to you, the tailgater. It is our way to say, 'We see you out there on the blacktop and we know you're thirsty.' This is why you deserve a 100 % natural craft beer brewed with the same stuff cavemen used thousands of years ago. Named with the help of 'Jay the Tailgate Guy', this is an Ameri[CAN] blonde ale that stays true to form. Bold use of [M]agmum and [C]ascade hops create a soft, subtle spice that sets this easy drinker apart from the rest. Beautiful golden malts complete this light colored, easy drinking ale."; "Crack one of these beauties wherever you are and in the immortal words of Jay, the tailgate Guy, 'Grill on.'"; "'The Official Beer of Tailgating'".

The Crack & Glug produced two rocky, bone-white fingers of head that fell nearly as quickly as I poured. Color was as advertised - a deep golden-yellow with NE-quality clarity. Nose was malty-sweet with just a whiff of Noble hops. Say, isn't that what I just wrote about the previous beer? Well, yes, and that is why I decided to follow one with the other. Mouthfeel was medium and the sweetness was a bit more prevalent here in the mouth. Finish lingered with a sweetness that was not enough to be outright cloying, but too sweet for this self-avowed hophead. Sorry, Blondie, but unless the Stillers are playing at the Chargers and I'm going to be in the parking lot tailgating with the infamous Pittsburgh 7 (Mad Dog, Crazy Mike, Gooch, Frere Denis, Steve-O, Jimmy and myself), you're getting left out. We need fuel!

A: The pour is a crystal clear straw/yellow color with a short lived white head.

S: Fairly corny with a high amount of sweet grain. Surprisingly, there's a really yeasty smell to this beer. Minimal hop notes, but what is there is fairly grassy, maybe a little bit floral.

T: Lots of corn flavor to the beer as well, and more of that cooked grain. Some old vegetables and stale bread notes are present which really ruin the beer for me.

M: Light in body with a moderate level of carbonation.

O: Not very pleasant overall, but I suppose if you're slugging these down as cold as possible, then it could work for you.

This beer pours a clear blonde color. The head is on inch of bright white foam that recedes slowly into nice lacing. The aroma is of bready malt, and some faint spicy hops. It is quite aromatic for a blonde ale. The taste is similar to the aroma, but the spicy hops are a bit stronger. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a silky texture, and moderate carbonation. Overall, this is one of the better blonde ales I've tasted. I could easily see myself drinking this again on a hot, sunny day.
