This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

The only beer that combines the hop forward Five with barrel aging, Saison du Blodget has a historic profile melding tartness and bitterness. The wild aroma is rooted in the mix of hop notes and spent peaches from the Fantasia, which also contribute unique yeasts and bacteria.

No date, but it's about 3 months old.

A: Pours a golden amber-ish color? Clear with a big frothy off-white head. Great head retention with an island of foam. Big, heavy fluffy chunks of lacing everywhere.

S: Very citrusy. Mangos and oranges I would say? A bit of spicy clove and black pepper but the citrus really shines here. Refreshing aroma.

T: Whoa. Very tart. Sour, really. Kind of a bitter orange peel/sour citrus and sour... melons? Big lactic sourness in the finish. Mild crackery malt. Very dry finish to go with all the sourness. Lingering tartness/bitterness forever. Light cloves and black pepper but mostly overpowered by the sour citrus flavors. Maybe get some sour apple now that I think of it?

M: Light, dry and tart.

O: I think this may be the sourest saison I've ever had. Not really that funky, just straight up wild ale sourness. I don't mind some funkiness or tartness but this is a sour bomb. Decent but a bit over the top for my tastes.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pale orange. Nice head. Nice surface foam.

Smell - Funky and citrusy. A little tropical. A bit of yeast. some Belgian sugars.

Taste - Very hoppy. Otherwise kinda bland. Yeasty again. Pale malts and leas funk. A little bitter.

Mouthfeel - medium body. Otherwise a nice saison.

Overall - Decent, but nothing better than what my local shop has.

750ml bottle, 2014 release, poured into a stemless wine glass.

The beer pours a copper color, hues of orange and gold, hazy complexion with a finger or so of white head that has low retention and little lace. The aroma is of funky yeast, citrus, hops, pale grain, oak, wildflower, spice and a bit of fruit, oddly bitter and tart. The flavors match the nose, but boy this is bitter, dry hopping is definitely the showcase here, crisp and floral, spicy and funky yeast, pale grain, musty oak, some tartness in there as well with some citrus and fruit, nice complexity and depth of flavors, the balance is nice after the initial bitterness subsides. The mouthfeel is okay, lower carbonation, struggles to coat the mouth, average body that finishes lightly dry but without much oomph.

Verdict: A nice saison, definitely a unique mix of tart and bitter, as stated on the label and description, the dry hopping is certainly evident but it has a nice delicacy and brightness after that initial bitterness hits the tongue. Easy and refreshing, but perhaps a bit busy.

A nice enough beer, but I thought the sour component was a bit over the top (well, for me at least). Still, there's a nice lemon grass and light honey component that helps to keep things interesting. A nice enough beer, even if it's not my cup of tea.
