Notes/Commercial Description:
"Four is truly a light yet flavorful beer. The recipe uses a good portion of wheat and incorporates a sour mash into the process to make it slightly tart and extra refreshing. It has delicate aromas and flavors that span a range of floral, grassy and herbal notes. The finish is extra dry and makes the beer a great beverage to pair with food, especially various cheeses and shellfish."

Malts and Grains: pale, wheat, and munich, rolled wheat
Hops: hallertauer mittlefruh

Tried in the basement that is Upright. Of the saisons that I tried, this was my personal favorite. Poured a hazy light golden color with a foamy off white head with some light carbonation. Some lace but limited.

The nose is complex. Some malty undertones with a hint of pilsner malt but some spicey wheat notes. The yeast notes are prevalent. Some pepper notes, a light plumy and a noticeable ester profile that really is complex. Some citrus notes with more of a lemon peel thing than anything. Very nice.

The taste really compliments the nose. The malt backs off a touch versus the yeast notes coming out. Some pils flavors as well as wheat but they take a back seat to the yeast notes. Pepper notes as well as an citrus taste that really come out and balance well. There is a tartness that reminds me of a lemon or orange, but leaves a dry finish that is nice. There is a touch of sour on the back end that leads to a drier finish. Touch of grass in the finish but limited.

The body is moderate to low and carbonation is light. The sourness helps out the body a touch. Overall this a great beer. Saison's are all over the board but this is a good example of a light saison.

Poured from 750mL bottle into my Selkirk Abbey tulip.

Appearance: light golden hue with a light haze and a moderately strong effervescence. Head pours an inconvenient 3+ fingers of frothy white foam which dissipate slowly and leave a chunky lace. Aside from the inconvenience, a pretty attractive beer!

Smell: lightly sweet malt with a bit of a pear-like character at first; then a far more unctuous umami develops in the aroma. It makes me think of tomatoes and soy sauce, though it's not anywhere near so strong as that. A fascinating brew.

Taste: sweet malt with a hint of diacetyl butteriness. There's a little funk and a nice grassiness here, but the umami from the aroma isn't really present. What a weird brew. The flavor is subtle but well-wrought; I like it.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a colossal carbonation. Creaminess is big and mouth-filling -- good stuff.

Overall: a weird beer even by Portland saison standards. That said, I like the experimental feel to it. Definitely worth a try if you come across it.

Very frothy, you get a little spillage simply from popping it open, pours a three plus finger head of delicate, airy bleached white foam, doesn’t have the skeleton to last very long, evaporates down to the surface with a few random splotches to create an impression of lacing. Warm golden color, on the gauzy side, the bubbles are random but fat and active. Pleasingly straightforward and fresh nose focused on grapefruit and orange citrus, apple, pear fruit, trim and focused so that any breadiness or coriander type spice remains a minor influence, has a meadowy freshness rather than leafy herbaceousness. Medium-bodied, has some palate traction but likewise fresh here as well with lavender, ginger, coriander, tea leaf, and wildflowers more than pepper or sweet yeastiness. Lemon, grapefruit citrus again a factor. The fruit flickers in and out, skin and seeds like apple and pear, some underripe apricot. The carbonation is average to plus, however, the mouth feel remains “hard” and somewhat chewy. A model of restraint while being accessible and easy to quaff. Happy to have tried it.

Pours a hazy light amber with billowing soapy white head, settles to a half inch with big chunks of lace on the glass. Smell: snappy grain, lemon, spicy, doughy note. Taste: somewhat vinous with light acetic and oaky-ish notes, lemon, wheat cracker, grassy and spicy with mild sweetness to back it up. Light bodied with active carbonation, drying, moderate mineral profile, with lemon and a little cooked pear in the finish. Enjoyable able strength saison that packs a good amount of flavor.

Got this one on tap at the brewery. I walked there from my house. I love living in Portland!

There wasn't a lot of head on it -- foamy and low and it dissipated pretty quickly. The appearance is great: very pale, cloudy (opaque) yellow/straw colored.

The smell is bright, fresh, lemony, spicy… flavors of lemony, spices like coriander, and straw to match the appearance. It's a little bit soapy.

The flavor matches, with a little funkiness from the hops. There's some sweetness in the body but it finishes fairly dry.

I'm a pretty big fan. I wish this was more available in standard 12oz bottles. This is a great spring/summer beer.
