Dark brown/burgundy ale with a thick & sudsy white head. Heavy cherry aroma along with some hints of smoke and spice. Thick mouth feel, crisp and dry finish after a sweet explosion of flavor--cherries, cinnamon, vanilla, smoke, spice. Ridiculously easy-drinking for such a complex beer. Finishes acidic, not sour but noticeably tart. I order this every time I can, at the brewery or elsewhere around town, and it never gets old. Amazing with almost any food, especially fatty meats / burgers. One of those beers that is just as good on a snowy day as it is on 80f and sunny days. Spectacular and I hope Upright brews another batch with cherries added soon...

Poured a murky deep roasted chesnut brown with a fizzy-like beige colored head.big sour cherry-like aromas,sherry vinegar and some wood come thru as well.I gotta admit I was looking for caramel and milk chocolate on the palate,they are both there but far underneath the sherry vinegar tart flavors.The mouthfeel is a bit sharp and fizzy,its full on tart and thats ok for what it is,I personally would have liked more complexity to the beer.

Upright is always appreciated - thanks, Kevin. Six pours a deep shade of woody brown, almost appearing black once it finally piles up in the glass. It's fairly volatile and the head grows pretty quickly and rests for a while at about a quarter-inch. It's light tan in color and leaves behind some generous strips and streaks of lacing and foam all along the top of the glass.

Six smells like straight up rye, at least at first. Very, very dry and piled up with boat loads of spicy rye. It's also quite woody in character, and only at the very end of the sniff can I detect the hops, which are kind of leafy and ashy all at once. As time goes on, I swear I can smell a faint hint of cherry sweetness somewhere in there, too, but the rye does its best to obliterate all else.

I was almost fearful to sip this one at first - I thought the rye might just burn a hole in my throat. While the taste is still incredibly rye-heavy, it's not to an abrasive or unpleasant degree. Very dry rye spice is backed with musty and woody notes of funk, almost like a forest floor. A delicate touch of hops provides a nice little snap mid-palate, but they don't add much flavor-wise.

It's definitely a malt and rye heavy beer, and warmth opens up a few more flavors of cocoa powder, light caramel, and some heavily toasted bread. I can sense a light, fruit sweetness, almost tartness in the background, but I'm having an incredibly hard time putting my finger on exactly what fruit it is. The bottle says cherry and tropical fruit - neither of which I necessarily agree with - but there's certainly some kind of tame fruit in there.

Needless to say, rye is the king here and pretty much takes a barbed wire covered baseball bat to any other flavor that even starts to trespass in its territory. The finish is quite spicy and tastes of toasty, rye bread. I wasn't surprised to find out that this beer is insanely dry, and left my palate feeling like it had been polished with some 60-grit. Lots of biting, snappy carbonation, too.

Pretty good beer, but I must confess and be completely honest - I'm not the biggest fan of rye beer that's ever lived, so my expectations for this beer weren't too high to begin with. Still surprisingly easy to drink when you consider the relative amount of rye that makes up the flavor profile. I'll be excited to soon try the rest of this Upright series (that is, Four, Five, and Seven).

Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this bottle. This was sampled alongside Upright 4, 5 and 7.

The beer pours a dark, brownish-red color with a tan head. The aroma is dark fruit, dark malts and rye. The flavor is wheat, pepper, candi sugar and rye. I don't get the same fruit characters in the flavor as I got in the aroma. High carbonation and medium mouthfeel.

Bottle (2012)

Dark ruby, chestnut brown in color with a very large, small-bubbled, tightly formed head that lasts and lasts. Eventually, it dies down and leaves thick spider-webbed lacing down the glass.

A sweet and dark-fruit forward aroma, with lots of raisin and fig leading the way. There's also some caramel, biscuit, and rye bread aromas.

The flavor is a powerful combination of raisin, fig/date, and lots of rye. The rye flavors linger and linger long after swallow and the level of sweetness is masive. I can't drink much of this, though it's not a bad beer.

Medium bodied with very high carbonation.

A tasty, interesting, rye saison, though the overbearing fruit sweetness doesn't make for a very drinkable beer.

A. Appearance of burnt caramel. Also some dark amber. Some good cloudy yeast in the bottle of the bottle.

S. Some tart sourness and some good solid spice to behold. Definitely great yeast. I'm enjoying this one.

T. This is good stuff from Upright. Lots of spices upfront. A hint of sweetness in the middle. And a fantastic finish of bitterness and a nice tart sour to round this thing out.

M. My thought here is that it's nice and dry. Great carbonation makes this one very crisp.

O. One of my favorite offerings from Upright. Definitely their best of the # series. I will never miss a chance to grab a bottle of this. No problem tearing a whole 750ml bottle apart myself. Great stuff!

A- This beer pours a pretty dense hazy reddish caramel color. There is a thick foam of light tan head that last a good bit and a slow cascade of tiny bubbles gliding to the surface. The second pour produces lots of jetsam suspended in the body.

S- The clean aroma has notes of bread crust and a slight caramel malt aroma that fades into a soft woody dark hop aroma. The finish has a hint of iodine that comes through as the beer opens.

T- The earthy woody dark hops finish with a spicy character that is enhanced by the fizz. There is some soft hints of malt but nothing comes through.

M-- The tight fizz boost the spice from hops or rye and the beer is just a bit dry but there is no alcohol heat in the medium mouthfeel.

O- The nice hop flavors are soft but they don't have a lot of support from other flavors and I don't get any saison yeast character. It is not offensive in any way just a bit drab. Especially compared to the bottle description.

750ml bottle, a surprising find during a quick pop-in to see an oldish chum at a downtown wine store.

This beer pours a rather cloudy, dark red brick amber hue, with three fat-ass fingers of puffy, rocky, and densely foamy ecru head, which leaves some incredibly attractive honeycombed lace around the glass as it very slowly abates.

It smells of grainy, biscuity caramel malt, with a certain spicy, dank rye interloper, a bit of dark tropical fruit, a hint of earthy yeast, and herbal, leafy hops. The taste is grainy, bready rye and caramel malt, in equal doses, in a manner that diffuses the extremes of both, with some additional bittersweet chocolate, a bit of dark demarara sugar, a hint of gritty yeast, and more leafy, subdued grassy hops.

The carbonation is pretty understated, with barely an initial peep, the body an adequate medium weight, and generally quite smooth. It finishes off-dry, the graininess of the malt persisting somewhat, the yeast doing a bit of hipster lingering and posturing, and some dank, earthy hops rounding things out.

A pleasant enough rye-tinted saison, the heady caramel maltiness sort of cutting through the middle, with the proclaimed titular yeast and spicy grain falling by the wayside, once they've spent their load. More saison chicanery from this Portland upstart, which, while interesting, is starting to mess with my impression of the style - I'm ready for something else now, methinks.

A: Quite an active head, light but persistent. Pours a hazy brown tinged with ruby.

S: Sweet caramelized breads, musty books, dried dates.

T: An opening sweetness bordering cloying gives way to some dry rye loaves. The sweet beginning was a bit dryer that expected. Otherwise, it is a bit muddled and dark fruits swirl around but it isn't that clear what should be going on. Nice fruit esters and a touch of lemony sourness.

M: Strong carbonation plays well here with the light viscosity. Neat dry finish leaves some grain on the tongue.

D: There is a lot of potential here but the grain bill isn't really able to distinguish itself. A great sipper and an interesting use of saison yeast.

Better than expected working through the private imports,Bottle at Volo. Way overcarbonated which we handled by creating an exeptional head.Dark coloured body yielding a taste fruity, lemoney, peppery, chocolate, some rye. Caramel, decent malting. easy drinking, average mouthfeel.

Poured from a capped 750mL bottle into my Bruery tulip.

Rosewood body, dark by quite clear, reveals crimson highlights when held to a strong light. A full creamy finger of buff/cream soft peaks rests up top. Superior retention, full sandy lacing.

Caramel, toast, and peppery hops fill the nose. A touch of grain, wort, and then phenolic yeast rounds things out.

Tart yeasty palate entry with a distinctive rye quality throughout. A grassy/floral/earthy hop flavor emerges next leading into the dry almost dusty finish. The rye and hops linger for a long time in the aftertaste...quite pleasant.

Effervescent, faintly puckering, rich, yet stil light-bodied mouthfeel.

Flavorful, well crafted, yet relatively simple (if not rustic) in many ways. Something of a thirst quencher despite being fairly dark.

Miserably thin trace of head. Super hazy and brown... almost suspect.

Nose is very faint. Apple, grape and maybe musty raspberry.

Faintest hint of tart at the front. Then a wisp of light, biscuity malt and a drop of lemon. Everything is... subtle. Stylewise, drinks like an English mild (NB: it's not supposed to be, I learned after reading up on it). Palatable, but light.

Even, average texture.

Pretty average but drinkable. Maybe this line was not clean.

750ml capped bottle into Tired Hands stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a frothy 2 finger cream colored head with good retention. Beer is a dark, almost opaque mahogany. Lacing is thick and layered with great stick. A really nice looking beer.

Nose is peppercorn, caramel, cream, brown sugar, and a creamy, hop bitterness. Moderately aromatic but a bit awkward.

Opens caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Creamy hop bitterness mixed with some coriander, clove and spice in the middle. End is more caramel sweetness balanced by a smooth nuttiness and anise. Aftertaste of spice and nutty notes. Decent.

Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth on the palate but accented going down. Messy finish with a lingering aftertaste. Just a touch heavy but still pretty drinkable.

Solid if a bit strange for the style. A nice deviation but I wouldn't revisit this one.

appearance: served in my ale asylum chalice - heavy carbonation leads to a slow/gradual pour - muddy amber body, thick foamy tan cap with good retention

smell: oddly complex - cherry, yeast, wood, caramel, ripe fruit sweetness

taste: This was interesting and complex but lacked in cohesiveness - tart cherry, oak, yeast, live carbonation, black pepper, caramel and touches of chocolate.

mouthfeel: over-carbonated

overall: good but somewhat dissapointing

750 mL bottle poured into a CCB snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - No head. Dark reddish. Just shy of an ugly beer.

Smell - Oxidized wet cardboard. Deep caramel. Not really a sweet caramel. More of an earthy aroma.

Taste - Slightly tangy. Oxidized. No rye. Some malt, but the yeastiness has dried it out and given it a sour character.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Dry and tangy. Not great, but not terrible to drink.

Overall - The worst Upright I've had. Maybe it's an old bottle, but there's not bottle date on it. Not pleasant and where's the rye?

Poured a deep dark brown, very hazy with a huge long lasting tan head.

The smell is great, very tart and rustic. Very spicy nose as well, with a hint of bread and cedar.

The flavor isn't quite a match for the great smell, very light and bready flavor with a dry spicy finish. There is alot going on with some cherry and oak flavors coming through nicely. There is a bit of the tartness that was detectable in the nose which is a nice compliment, but its very mild. Becomes even more complex as it warms.

The mouthfeel was very dry.

Pours jet black with nice tan head. More complex than I remember from previous tastes. Chocolate, toasted malt, and slight tartness are in the forefront, but are followed by a long, dry aftertaste that is reminiscent of match heads and sulfur- oddly enough, this is not unpleasant. Complex, many flavor notes, but the mineral aftertaste is perhaps the most distinctive. Hop bitterness is noticeable underneath rich flavors of dark fruits, coffee and caramel. So much going on here.

750 ml bottle. Served in a Unibroue tulip, the beer pours a burnt orange/brown color with a couple inch light tan head that actually kept growing slowly for a few minutes after the initial pour. It took a while for the head to settle down before I could start drinking it. There's also a lot of lacing. Aroma is yeasty and fruity, it smells like pears, rye/dark bread, herbs, cloves, and apples. The brew tastes like dark bread/rye, pears, apples, cloves, caramel malt, and some dark fruit. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and is well carbonated. The carbonation is soft which helps make it easy to drink. I liked this, and I wouldn't mind trying it again in the future. $11.99 a bottle.

Bottle: Poured a dark dirty brown color ale with a generous head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramel malt with light spicy notes and some herbal notes are also discernable. Taste is also dominated by caramel malt with light chocolate presence, some spicy notes probably originating from the rye with some herbal notes and dry at the end. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Somewhat dryer then I was expecting with quite a bit of complexity.

Snagged up a 750ml bottle from Beaumont Market... mmm rye..

- Bottle opened and a flood of beer came pouring out... talk about angry carbonation! After a few fingers of head settled down... out came a nice semi-cloudy cola colored brew with about a pinky finger of everlasting mocha colored head..

- Nice zesty farmhouse smell... little lemon, zingy sour, bready french yeast.. semi-sweet... big citrus.

- Bready yeast... zingy lemon zest with a subtle sweet malt... great balance.. little rye and hop.. perhaps citrus... little alcohol, and a bit of a Belgian-like dark flare...

- Little chewy and dry... overall medium bodied... bottle blasted open with mad carbonation, but the drink is quite smooth.. perhaps lots of bubbles, but micro-sized.

- A great drink, and a nice change from the normal. Recommended.

Pours a muddy brown color. A 2 finger dark beige, creamy head adorns and leaves a nice spongy lace.

The aroma is ok; nothing too special. Some slight sweetness, spiciness, chocolate and some earthy yeast.

The taste is quite the myriad. Chocolate, caramel, spices, pepper, slight herbal hop notes, and you can definitely pick up on the Saison yeast.

There's a bit of creaminess to the feel, albeit with a bit of prickly carbonation. Maybe medium in body.

Interesting and quite enjoyable.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Not a gusher, but an oversized real light cocoa and even tanned fistfull giant head. Even on slow pour this thing just balloons to stupid sized. Body color is a very dark mahogany red, and you can see a fairly strong rising column of middle carbonation at the bottom. Giant whipped up retention, but just wont go away making for difficult drinking.

Interesting nose. Milk chocolate, dry cocoa powder. Soft floral senses and somewhat perfume like aromatics. Quite nice, hints at porter chocolate roast character but something else is in the mix.

Real interesting palate. Large expected carbonation on the tongue, mineral, and large prickly sensing bubbles that give well to an earthy and peppery finish. Quite dry, but with some dark hinting spices as well. Chocolate milk sensations a bit in the mid palate coupling with a bit of fancy heat in sharp farmhouse goodness.

A real neat drink, but unfortunately seems like it's a little haphazard in its delivery overall.

I scored Six tonight at Bier Thierty in Bown... Paid about $11ish, but it is a good deal compared to the other places .... Poured into my small CC goblet... tannish head shows good retention and lacing... the brew is hazed amber.

The nose is a bit toasty... lite caramel essence.. Belgian phenolic notes.. light spice and grainy malts..

Flavor is pretty cool, but doesn't ever gel with any "traditional" style... slight esters make me think of golden raisins... the malt profile is complex and pretty dry.... I dig it. toasted biscuits and dry dark toast make the Yeast really jump....

The body is a bit thicker than expected, but I've figured the same for all the standard Upright bottles .... Carbonation is good.. but the mouthefeel is too heavy.

Sturdy brown ale turned more complex and rustic. Lotsa body (thick, creamy, slick), strong English maltiness and chocolate, very earthy, spice and wood, slight tartness and surprisingly dry.

Lots of sediment.

Well made.

Reminds me of Jester King's Commercial Suicide but stronger.
