"Six is a dark rye beer with layered flavors including chocolate, caramel, pepper, wood, cherry and tropical fruit. It starts semi-dry and smooth and finishes fully dry and tart with a small bite from the hops. The overall balance of the Six makes it easy to pair with richly prepared meats along with many harder cheeses."

Malts: organic pale, caramel, rye, black
Unmalted: rolled rye
Hops: magnum, tettnanger

On draft at the Press Club in Portland, OR.

Miserably thin trace of head. Super hazy and brown... almost suspect.

Nose is very faint. Apple, grape and maybe musty raspberry.

Faintest hint of tart at the front. Then a wisp of light, biscuity malt and a drop of lemon. Everything is... subtle. Stylewise, drinks like an English mild (NB: it's not supposed to be, I learned after reading up on it). Palatable, but light.

Even, average texture.

Pretty average but drinkable. Maybe this line was not clean.

Bought at Liquor Shed.

Pours a clear reddish brown, great head of almost tan foam, pretty good lacing.

I smell pitted fruit, rye, caramel malt. Overall, definitely on the malty side.

Rye is upfront and somewhat spicy. Caramel malt adds some sweet notes, fruit is subtle, get some nuttiness.

Medium body, carbonation is spritzy.

Enjoyable. Alcohol does provide some warming.

Look: It pours brown with a brown head. The head is full and head retention is excellent.

Smell: There are a lot of aroma notes in balance. Chocolate, caramel, rye, and wood are all well represented. There are some background notes of cherry and low citrus notes. There is a bit of dank in the background notes as well.

Taste: The rye flavors are the most prominent with chocolate, caramel and wood given complex flavor development. The are some cherry notes and a hint of citrus in the background.

Feel: It is moderately full in the body and kind of creamy. The finish is smooth and semi dry.

Overall, this is a wonderful rye beer with a good combination of flavors to support the overall presentation.

Interesting enough for me to want to try a second Upright saison... but #6 is not integrated enough to be that ale.
Two points...
First, #6 is too different from the saison to be one. A saison could have this many hops, but not also this much rye.
Second, this did not complement two different meals. It overwhelmed a pasta with mushroom sauce for dinner. Then the next day, it overwhelmed my soup for lunch. #6 has a problematic after-taste. It needs to respect food. To its credit, #6 did go OK with a Jarlsberg... but many undistinguished beers do also.

I liked Upright's label. I like how they seem to be adapting the Belgian village brewing tradition in an urban setting that, also, is the world's hop-growing craft-brewing capital. But, they did too much to #6.
My advice: less hops, less rye, more wheat; and most important, make sure your ales place nice with food if you want to stay within the Belgian tradition.

Bottle to becher pint glass, the appearance was a fairly dark red to murky brown color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a good pace. Mild stringy lace ran here and there.
The aroma had some of the sweet to spicy rye up front involving some light floral sweetness to ruddy almost burnt milk and dark chocolate tones flowing into some dark fruits. Light woodiness, moderate amount of sweet dried oats and just a whiff of coffee.
The flavor moderately blended the prior aromas stealthily into some cherry and mango sweetness. Light black pepper was noted here. Mellow aftertaste of the wood, dark fruit and floral sweet qualities.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Noticeable pepper marks a bit of harshness along my tongue but not necessarily overbearing. Carbonation felt spot on. ABV felt as projected by the brewer.
Overall, pretty nice rye beer or was this supposed to be a saison? Did I hear that somewhere? I'm sorry if so, next time I'll put this in a tulip if this was some sort of saison.

A: pours a deep, dark, red brown (roodbruin? roodbruin!) /oaky/mahogany color, with a frothy beige 3 finger head, nice lacing
S: smells of raisins and chocolate immediately, with notes of cherry and plum, with pruney notes and subtle rich coffee qualities. there is a definite note of pomegranate juice on the nose. PS: Also some roasted malt and an oaty character.
T: wow the chocolate and raisin are strong here, they emerge immediately, deep and rich, dominating the first impression, subsequently, there is a good (though certainly not overstated) tartness, that serves as a pleasant undercurrent to the dominating flavors. there is a maltiness too that comes through after, the initial fruitiness has come through.
M: intensely dry, just like I like it. Well. Attenuated.
O: I wish that this had more alcohol in it, because I would be hesitant to sit on anything under like 8% that's not a wild ale. that being said, this is interesting (in a good way!) though to me, I could stand to see more diversity in the ester profile, I get plum, raisin, and the thickness of pomegranate juice, but that with the chocolate notes makes it a tad overpowering, which, I think; can cause some finer notes to be missed. That being said I love saisons, and hope (someday, somehow) to start a brewery of my own with saisons being the entire base of the year round lineup, so I love seeing different (more traditional) things done with the style. I don't know when I would recommend drinking this honestly, there's not really a particularly good time, maybe when you fancy a porter, I don't know, but it is a well executed beer that is certainly worth a try, if only for the sake of education. Prost and a votre sante!

PS: don't really get rye here, but that being said, I am (personally) most accustomed to taking in rye in lighter colored beers and less in dark ones so that might be why. Honestly, I also can't finish a 750 of this, it would be better in 330's

This nice little brew is a first for me from this brewery----here she goes!
From the 750 ml bottle in a snifter. This nice rye saison pours a deep
muddied brown tinged mahogany with a nice head of off white to tan foam
that subsides to a thick ring, thin light pool, and subtle lacing. Nose of
spicy rye, cocoa, subtle stone fruit notes of cherry, earthy yeast, and subtle
hops. Flavors exceed the nose with a WOW factor for the style---cocoa and
light cherry mingle nicely with light yeast notes. Dark malts with lightly spicy
rye tingle with mild herbal hops on the rear making for a fantastically balanced
ale. Nice mouth feel, smooth, moderately dry on the finish, and lightly carbonated.
Balanced, balance, balance.....perfect for this style and a mighty fine find.

Cheers

Growler from the brewery.

A clear very dark brown with reddish highlights and a thin, beige head that recedes to a ring. The nose is decent, This is among the grainier saisons I've had, with rye, caraway seed, dark wheat and some unsweetened cocoa as well. There's a noticeable hop character, bitter, rather leafy and moderately minty. The palate opens dry and grainy with a blend of rye, bitter hops and some cocoa. An increasing amount of sweetness is perceived on the mid-palate, with some caramel noticeable. Drying on the finish with a lingering leafy hop bitterness, mind grainy tannins and some cocoa. The blend of darker malt flavors and super dry finish don't entirely work for me, but this beer is solid nonetheless
