really old bottle not holding up well, wish i could have tasted this fresh, but upright is one of my favorites (and somehow still so unsung), so i took a chance on a warm shelf bottle lost in oblivion in a reno liquor store last winter, covered in dust, finally opened it, knowing it was likely going to be this way. do they still brew this? eager to try it fresh now, because this was rough. not sure how old, but old, and i thought maybe it would have some brett or something keeping it going, but nope, its gone. golden honey colored, still pretty clear but deeper color than i expected for the style, short layer of bubbles on top and still well carbonated, but oxidation fills the room, a shame, still obvious cereal wheat organic character at the core, a candied citrus note, but a lot of wet newspaper and even green pepper, pennies, and white pepper, its soul is gone but its bones remain. the flavor agrees, still some belgian esters in this, but the rest is broken down real far, some toasted character i am not used to in the style, some peppercorn character, coriander, saltwater taffy, powdered sugar, this is somehow still sweet, a lemon note, even limoncello if i am being kind, but also super metallic and faded, light struck, curious dusty hoppiness, and now kind of cheap tasting which is just not how these guys roll. still neat to have something from upright that is new to me, but i was kind of hoping for something weird and old in a good way and celebratory, but this was not really a drinkable beer at this point. i will keep scores fair, acknowledging that this is nothing like it probably was when it was brewed. holding out hope ill try it better at some point. weird now, not good.

Late June 2015 around the pool for this one.

Pours a light yellow with greater than expected clarity for a witbier. Also had a pretty massive head exceeding the 1" level, pillowy. Aroma was wheat and light spice rack notes, not over the top, I can dig it. Coriander, wheat, hay. Like a hybrid wit saison at times.

The taste and mouth feel are helped along by a little trick that is more well known in the hazy ipa game: flaked oats/rolled wheat. Smooth and not so much pungency from those spice rack notes that are often the bane of my existence and the #1 reason why I struggle with witbiers/hefeweizen kind of styles. Hints of citrus, mostly lemon and grapefruit, permeate the entire beer. Carbonation is high but appropriate.

I like it more than the average witbier, but the price is a bit out of what I would like to spend on something of this style and quality. Good, but not that good.

Reviewed from notes. 750ml bottle shared by Chris - thanks.

A: Pours the color of grapefruit juice (very pale yellow) with a solid one-inch thick white head which fades to a thin cap and leaves splotchy lace.

N: Wheat, lemony citrus, coriander, orange peel, grass/hay, herbal.

T: Very Saison-like in the fruity yeast, mildly tart wheat, some funk, orange peel more present, black peppery spice.

M: Semi-moderate body and medium carbonation. Prickly, slightly tart, lemon and yeasty finish.

O: Easy drinking and refreshing.

Bottle I brought to share at AndrewK's tasting.

Pours a murky yellow with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, wheat, citrus fruit, citrus juice, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, wheat, citrus, and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, light, and easy to drink.

Poured golden straw with haziness and minimal, white head.

Smell was primarily lemon and wet hay or wheat. Quite vegetal.

Taste had a lot of lemon acidity as well. Quite an acidic / dry beer, like what you'd expect in a gueuze! Very light malt bill.

This tasted as if it spent a lot of time in oak barrels to me, though as far as I know it's not barrel aged. I quite enjoyed it, it doesn't have a particularly complex profile but it's light and acidic and enjoyable to sip.
