Starting with a robust grist of ashburne mild malt, this stout takes an unusual turn using open fermentation, saison yeast, and wine barrel aging before being dosed prior to bottling with a specially prepared cold press from Extracto Coffee Roasters. It starts with an intoxicating aroma that leads through a malty yet dry and tart profile.

From a 750 ml bottle (no date, but my bottle is at least a year old) to a snifter.
A-The beer looks appropriate with a thin finger of dark brown foam sitting on top of a nice looking opaque liquid. Head retention is decent as the foam lasts for a few minutes before devolving into a film on top of the beer. Viscosity is on the light side for a stout.
S-The first thing I sniff is acetic acid, which is a bit of surprise in a beer that bills itself as a coffee stout. Then I realize this off-putting smell may be intentional; weird. I do sniff some coffee, but the aroma is stale and old and oxidized. Wisps of char and earth also come through.
T-The taste is more of the same with vinous, tart, acetic notes coming through a stale three-day-old-coffee-pot flavor. An ashen note creeps up, but once I get past the sour flavor, the beer tastes mostly earthy and oxidized.
M-The beer is medium in heft with slightly crisp, moderate levels of carbonation.
O-This one did not turn my screws. I know my bottle may have been past its prime, but I just did not like the vinous, acetic flavor in combination with the coffee. Oh well.

As a sour lover, don't think this is great. As a coffee stout lover, I also don't think it is great. Starts sour with some coffee and ends with a bitter roastiness. Knew it was sour going in but does not hit quite the sour notes as other good sours. Love the experiment but would not get this one again

Thanks to Chris F. for sharing this one at mrbubbler's tasting.
Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, and earth aromas. Taste is much the same with sour cocoa, coffee, and red wine flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and a bit of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with an interesting mix of coffee and red wine barrel aging.
Serving type: bottle.

Do you like coffee? Check!
Do you like Upright? Check!
Do you like red wine? Sometimes?
Do you like to mix all of those together in a bottle with a great design without mentioning that there is a red wine taste to the beautiful new "Barrel Aged Coffee Stout" that you just paid way too much for? Well, Upright did.
I am sure there are people that would just eat this up, but I did not want a wine barrel aged coffee stout. This was not mentioned on the label and the flavor profile is something that simply does not work well together for me.
It's disappointing, because I can smell and taste a great coffee stout under all of this red wine flavor.
