Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

"Produced for the Holiday Ale Fest... a malty biere de garde blended with some barrel aged old ale from 2010. The two beers came together to make a brew with strong aromatics and a complex flavor profile. The French inspired portion, making up 80% of the blend, was fermented with lager yeast at an elevated temperature in one of our open fermenters. The traditional British-style old ale had been aging for over a year with brettanomyces yeast in a wine barrel"

Oxblood-amber with taupe trailers.
Herbal spice, dried cranberry, wood and star anise on the nose – almost like potpourri.
Bit of toffee, big tart wood, some plum compote, a bit of funky lemon rind, a touch of sherry oxidation, and bits of vanilla and cream soda.
Medium, tingly, clingy.

I get the musty old ale, but biere de garde? In a touch of herbs, maybe, but plays more like a Flanders Red. Complex and nice, though not quite a stunner.

Another obscure Upright brew thanks to Kan. Served in a tulip. Bottle #103/116

A - White foam settles to a thin cap and specks of lace. Hazy, slightly murky, dark brown body.

S - You can definitely smell the cask here, with a mix of oak and vanilla. Barrel flavors are complemented by sweet malts evocative of a glazed oatmeal cookie as well as a light sourness. Not getting much of the Belgian/French yeast character; another review says lager yeast was used, which would make sense as I didn't get any phenolic character.

T - The taste isn't quite nearly as compelling. Overly oaky, with very muted brown malt and leathery yeast flavors. Watery, with faint earthiness and spice and otherwise generally muddled. Perhaps a faint bit of tartness and medicine in the finish from the brett.

M - Smooth, medium body, with lower carbonation and a bit of warmth to it. Finishes dry and oaky.

D - I liked the smell quite a bit, and it grew on me as the beer warmed up. Unfortunately, the flavor seems to have fallen off a cliff somewhere in the past couple years. I guessed this was aged in bourbon barrels, but apparently it was not; something about the flavor profile I guess?

A - Pours a medium brown with a soapy foamy two inch darker tan head.

S - Woody-funk, subtle spices, raisins and some fruit cake.

T - Funky, oaky, winter spices, subtle dark fruit, not sweet.

D - Good carbonation with a lighter body, slightly tart.

O - Wood-funk winter ale. Light with lots of spices.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #98 of 116. Someone said there are multiple batches. This is Single Cask Winter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Nice off white head. Pretty clear. Settles to mostly nothing.

Smell - Extremely oaky. Just oak all over. Caramel and just a hint of a vinegar acidity.

Taste - Much more acidic right up front. Tart, never quite sour. Still really oaky. The beer flavor is clean and drops off leaving mostly oak. Just a little bit of malt before it drops off.

Mouthfeel - Oaky as all getout, but that's what I expect from the style. Clean flavor. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Really clean and just enough acidity. Tons of oak. Good stuff from Upright.

From the Facebook page: A blend of French style biere de garde and English style old ale, Provision has a profile reminiscent of several historic brews but remains distinct onto itself. The biere de garde portion was openly fermented with the brewery's house lager yeast at 60F, producing a full, malty base that maintained a crisp finish. That was blended post fermentation with the old ale, then put back into the cask for over one year where it gained a bit of acidity and aged flavors that give the Provision a layered depth that's fun to pick apart. Inspired by the great Liefmans Goudenband, the Provision will cellar well like the classic from Oudenaarde.

Brewed Oct 27th, 2011 & Oct 19th, 2010
116 bottles, 7.3% ABV

Nice garnet beer with a solid quilt of caramel foam that is soapy and loose. Smells of grain, oak, pie cherries, tart cranberry, a touch of tea and peppercorn. Nice spicy malt, a near rye character, wood, nice acetic tartness, slight bitterness, some more pie cherry and the slightest touch of mulling spice. The tartness is nice and moderated. Medium bodied with sharp carb and a dry finish. Nice beer from the folks at Upright. I'm consistently impressed by their beers.

Thanks for sharing, Tim.

The pour is a hazed brown/dark amber color with a sizable off-white head. A nice combination of toasted malt and fruitiness. Some slight tartness of lemon and dark fruit in there with sweet toffee. Tastes quite similar to how it smells. Although the Biere de Garde is the predominant component of the blend, the strong toffee, toast, and chocolate flavors of the old ale come through well. Quite a bit of lemon, yeast, and fruit character to it with a touch of tartness to it.

Beer served in a snifter, shared by someone at a Sole Composition series tasting, thanks.

Beer is amber with an off-white head of small bubbles, low retention, some lacing, low carbonation, looks like beer.

Aroma is carmel, nutty, sweet, buttery, earthy, oaky, darkness, mild funk and leather.

Beer is medium to light in body and leads off with a mild sweetness and finishes with a light to moderate bitterness, oak / grains. It is light in carbonation and has a decent finish. A good beer.

Big thanks to Thorpe for sharing this one, served alongside a bunch of other Sole Composition beers.

Beer pours a clear amber with a large white head. Smell is of caramel and dark fruits, a bit like a barleywine, but with something else a little different thrown into the mix. The flavor on this is just flat-out strange. It has a number of qualities of an old ale with caramel, brown sugar and dark fruit, but the biere de garde also factors in as well bringing some spice and breadiness to it. It's an interesting combination of flavors, but it doesn't quite come together for me as I'd hoped. The mouthfeel is especially odd, as it's extremely light and heavily carbonated, which is a complete contrast from any other beer with these flavors. Overall, this is an interesting experiment from Upright, but not my favorite of their beers. Still, by any other standards other than Upright's own, it's far above average.

Bottle at Thursday's Upright Sole Composition tasting. Served in a Mikasa tulip.

Bottle 52/62.

Pours a clear amber-tawny color with a small off-white head that falls quickly, leaving some spotty lacing as it forms a cap around the edges.

The nose carries some moderately-heavy bread and caramel with a bit of toast and toffee. Some light earthiness and a touch of leather behind that. The flavor hits notes of dark fruit and toasted malt along with a fine earthiness.

There is a touch of light sweetness coming through along with very mild bitterness. The finish is dry and smooth after a chewy, medium body with light carbonation. Touch of Brett-induced funk through the finish.

Not my favorite of the bunch, but still a very interesting and well-made brew.

On tap at 2012 HAF.

Off white head on top of light amber body, decent head retention and lacing. Brett is fairly noticeable in the nose, barrel forward, some oak notes. Pretty hoppy taste for style, probably attributable to the fine blending with English old ale, a bit of spice from the bier de garde portion. Complex yeast profile, you can certainly decipher multiple yeasts at work here, medium mouthfeel, complex, decent carbonation and fairly dry finish. One of the more interesting beers at HAF from one of PDX master blenders.
