Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: boralyl on 04-01-2012

A mix of barrel aged Four and Six using cherry and raspberry along with souring yeasts and bacteria. It's fruit forward in the nose with a balanced flavor bringing the malts and oak together. Named for friend and colleague Ben Love of Gigantic Brewing Company.

Released March 2012 (750ml bottles)
Second Release - March 2013

From Upright's blog:
"...essentially the Four Play but with barrel aged Six with raspberries mixed in. The inaugural release... used 25% of the Six. It's an evolution of the Four Play, giving it added layers - more malt, more alcohol, deeper color, and more fruit (but still in check with the malt profile)."

Latest batch into wine glass.

Appearance is cherry wood in color sporting an active off white head that settles quickly to nothing. Body is quite clear for such a dark beer with plenty of light coming through. I'm guessing the yeast sediment will make for a murkier pour from the bottom half of the bottle.

Aroma is of sweet cherry juice, raspberry purée, a touch of oak, and a vinous sweet pink wine. Not the most complex aroma but quite pleasing.

Flavors of cherry skins, raspberry seeds, cherry pulp, oak tannins, with a hint of cranberry acidity. Again, not the most complex flavor but pleasing and easy drinking. Slightly acetic but not distracting.

The beer sports a "heftier" light body, low level of carbonation, and pretty dry mouthfeel. A hint of fruity sweetness is present but finishes dry with a tannic feel. Acidity is in check and makes this very drinkable.

Overall a pleasant but partly underwhelming beer. The finish lacks a strong flavor presence and the overall profile is pretty one note (well maybe two, cherry/raspberry). Though it lacks complexity and flavor punch it drinks really nicely and offers up good fruity flavors with a nice level of sourness and clean finish. Recommended to try at least once but not necessarily to search the corners of the earth for one.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Murky but vibrant red/orange/slightly brown beer with a small white head.
S: Funky and acidic. TONS of raspberry, with citrusy sourness. Lots of lactic acidity.
T: BURST of raspberry. WOW, this is like a kick of raspberry to the face. Mild funkiness and lots of lactic sourness. A bit of oakiness.
M: Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Slightly dry finish.
O: This is a very nice sour. I loved the raspberry flavors in this. Upright is doing some excellent stuff.

Thanks, cavemanlawyer!

Dark raspberry in color with a quickly forming, persistent, light pink head that leaves irregular spiderwebs and spots of lace down the glass. A gorgeous beer.

A very well rounded, integrated, lovely aroma: fresh raspberries, some mild hay and barnyard funk, along with some definite lactic sourness.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, and is delicately layered, intricate, and well-rounded: fresh raspberries, earth, moderate sourness, and some very mild barnyard and hay. No flavor is particularly dominant, and this is exceptionally drinkable.

A master of mouthfeel. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, but velvety. The flavor melt away yet come together exceptionally well.

I was very impressed with this one.

Appearance. Pours a deep peachy-amber with some haze and a thin white head.

Smell. Floral, sour berries, cherries , and even some peaches with a bunch of nice woody funk. Yum.

Taste. Sour fruits, mainly red berries, cherry, and vinegar. Some dank funk and old wood. Quite dry.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, medium-low fine carbonation.

Overall. Not as tasty as I had hoped. I liked Four Play much better, but still a fine sour.
