Notes/Commercial Description:
A mix of barrel aged Four and Six using cherry and raspberry along with souring yeasts and bacteria. It's fruit forward in the nose with a balanced flavor bringing the malts and oak together. Named for friend and colleague Ben Love of Gigantic Brewing Company.

Released March 2012 (750ml bottles)
Second Release - March 2013

From Upright's blog:
"...essentially the Four Play but with barrel aged Six with raspberries mixed in. The inaugural release... used 25% of the Six. It's an evolution of the Four Play, giving it added layers - more malt, more alcohol, deeper color, and more fruit (but still in check with the malt profile)."

750ml bottle, 2014 release, poured into a Cantillon degustation glass.

The beer pours a medium burgundy color, hues or bright reds, hazy and opaque with a nice finger of white head that has moderate retention and yields no lace. Lots of berries on the nose, raspberry, cherry, lightly tart, oaky, brown sugar, light spice, pie filling comes to mind, light malty base. The berries translate well on the tongue, tart cherry and raspberry, very seedy with some wine like red grain and tannins, subtle funkiness, soft oak, pie filling and spices with a bit of brown sugar while the base saison plays a small role, although its darker flavor wise than expected. The mouthfeel is zippy, nice lively feel, creamy at times towards the finish while coating the mouth very well.

Verdict: A nice fruited sour/saison beer. The berries are expressed very well, the base fades out and gives way to the tartness/sourness and the fruit, but that doesn't detract from how enjoyable the beer is. Very pleasant balance and it steers clear of biting sourness, definitely a successful and delicious beer.

A - Rouge-tinted orange gold. Bone white hazy foam.

S - Green apple and nectarine with a lemon sourness which attacks the nose.

T - Tart pucker up front followed by sour fruited wood. Some oak but I'd like more. Highly comparable to Cascade's offerings (which I find to be good yet lacking depth and interest), although with a vague - rather than specific - fruitiness.

M - I didn't make any notes on the mouthfeel which means it was unobtrusive. I remember it being quite sticky and with medium body and carbonation.

O - A pleasant sour but not mind-blowing. Simply did not have the complexity, depth, and oak character which I was expecting. Sourness rendered it fairly one-dimensional, although it was a little funkier than some of the most simplistic wild ales I've had.
