Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

118 bottles, released March 2012

Saison du Blodget (prounounced blow-jay) is a blend of two hoppy saisons. Both beers were one-off batches. The first, 2011 Monk and Mingus, was brewed for the Cheers to Belgian Beers festival and used 25 pounds of Tettnanger and Liberty hops. The second, Todo Modo, was a session beer fermented with Saison DuPont yeast and hopped with East Kent Goldings and Santiams. A single cask of each was filled and lightly dosed with brettanomyces claussenii, aged for 10 and 5 months, respectively, then blended... Named for our friend and colleague, Corey Blodgett, who collaborates with us once a year for a new Monk and Mingus brew.

750ml

A great big thanks goes out to Gabe for the bottle! Saison de Blodget gurgles from the bottle in a bright golden stream before, after filling the glass, becoming sunset orange. Moderate haze runs throughout the body while perfectly straight streams of tiny carbonation bubbles run to the surface. A creamy white head easily forms on the pour and rests at a thick cap leaving sheet lacing down the glass.

Fruit forward and brett laden is what the nose tells me. Your usual saison fruits are noted; peach, pear, and green apple but what really sets this beer apart is a welcomed tropical note; peppery mango and soft pineapple. A touch of candi sugar and sugar cookie malts make up a light base while botanical brett compliments all. With some warmth the brett segues between the wildflower aspect and barnyard, horseblanket. Grassy hops zip it up. This beer seems to be ever evolving.

Peach, pear, and green apple all meld together as one as soon as this saison hits the tongue. The middle flashes brightly with bitter grassy notes and tannic oak before musty fruit takes back over. The brett addition in the flavor is mostly on the finish adding mustiness to the fruit and summer field/wildflower qualities on the swallow. A long overripe pineapple note lingers on the finish. Again, it seems this beer is ever evolving and changing. Very nice!

The body leans toward the lighter side of moderate and while the carbonation is more active than average it's very soft. There's quite a bit of oak tannin from the middle to swallow that really dries things out and accentuates the light hoppy bitterness. This saison is almost too easy to drink.

Upright has done a great job with Saison de Blodget. It's fruity and bretty with both complimenting each other. The barrel aging has added a nice touch of tannin making the finish superbly dry. This is rustic while stlll sporting a nice new wave twist. Thanks again, Gabe!

Thanks to Dan & co. for sharing! Quick review from written notes.

Pale golden yellow color with bright clarity, and a thin layer of foam on the surface. Only a few spotty flecks of foam around the edges, not much lacing to speak of. Lasting ring of broken skim around the edges.

Dry oak and fruity lemon zest in the aroma.

Strong effervescent feel, tart, dry, and crisp. Citric tartness and zesty fruit flavors, lemon/orange zest. A little sweetness up front, quickly becoming firmly tart into the dry oaky finish. Nicely blended with some unique fruity flavors and nuance from the oak barrel.

750 mL bottle courtesy of fthomasl pours a lightly hazed gold color with a fair amount of white head. Spotty lace.

Nose is a freaking delicious blend of hops, saison yeast and brett. Wow...perfect nose, I cant think of a beer that has ever smelled better.

Taste is unbelievable...vinous grape skins, leathery brett and a perfect Belgian yeast character. Lemons come out and just add to a perfect drinking experience. Awesome saison, one of the best I have ever had.

Big thanks to starrdogg for sharing this one at our Upright tasting the other night. Served in a Mikasa tulip.

Bottle 96/118

Pours a somewhat-cloudy yellow-golden color with an average white head that diminished somewhat quickly, leaving behind some sparse, spotty lacing.

The nose has a light amount of hops with some citrus and earth. Good notes of light pepper behind that. Some faint grapefruit. Flavor is a nice citrus bite with a nice earthy funk behind that.

Long duration and light acidity through the finish with moderate bitterness on a light body with fizzy carbonation. Finish is dry and a bit tart with some pink grapefruit and accompanying rind coming through toward the end, lending a nice citrus zest and bitterness.

Really another excellent beer from Upright. I'm an Upright homer from thousands of miles away. Fantastic stuff.

On tap at upright.

A clear gold with a dense, off white head with excellent retention and gorgeous lacing, this is a beautiful saison. The nose is marvelously floral. So delicate, so refined, so vibrant! Plenty Floral with rose , jasmine , potpourri, along with Perfume, rustic grain, a white wine base. Fantastic.

The palate opens mildly tart and funky, with a Brett note, earthy funky, a touch of clove, before a wall of floral flavor takes over. Rose, jasmine, a little bit of kafir lime leaf, a dry, quenching wheat bite, and some yeast. Drying on the finish with floral and mild Brett notes, this is really excellent stuff.

Bottle 96 of 118. Poured into a Bruery glass. Huge thanks to thorpe429 and starrdog for all the Upright bottles we had. First review of this? Odd.

A - Darkish amber color with an egg white head.

S - You definitely get a cross between IPA and saison in the nose. It starts off with some floral citrusy hops and ends with some spicy funkiness from the saison side.

T - The taste ends up really similar to the smell. An interesting combination of the slight bitterness/citrus from the hops and the spicyness from the yeast right up front. On the back end you get a little bit of that tart character that seems to be prevalent in Upright saisons.

M - A good amount of carbonation, bordering on a bit too much. The hop combination creates some lingering bitterness on the back end.

O - An ambitious beer for sure. Very interesting. Definitely worth a try. It was at this point when "upright is the Fantome of the US" was uttered. And that was an incredibly apt statement.

Opened at 4/20 tasting.

Very clear wheaty color, small head.

Nose is a balance of lacto and brett, peach and some other fruit, sour farmhouse yeast, a bit of sweetness. I think this is supposed to be hoppy but there's not a very strong hop presence left in the nose.

More hops in the flavor, faint bitterness and floral notes, some faint fruit, interesting balance between light hops and light tartness.

Decent carbonation, fairly dry mouth feel, pretty drinkable, pretty good.

Thanks to Tieman for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, grain, Brett, peach, apricot, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour peach, apricot, and Brett flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a nice balance all around between the Brett and barrel aging.
