Bottle opned on 12.20.12

A - Pours a dark cola brown with a foamy light tan head that just sits there.

S - Malts, slight spice, raisins.

T - Bready malt, chalky wheat.

D - Good carbonation with a surprisingly heavier body, chalky on the tongue.

O - Malty, dark and chalky. Not that impressed with this one.

Ive been holding on to this bottle for quite some time. Long enough that I sadly forget who sent it to me but I know I held on to it for a couple reasons. One being its upright and the farmhouse funk might come out with time and secondly...a schwarzbier by them just seems too weird to drink alone.

Popped the bottle with some friends around the campfire and poured into a tulip. The brew is a sliw gusher and appears brown in my glass with a huge frothy head the fills more than half the glass.

The nose ob this is fruity, more so than one would ever anticipate for the typical style but considering the farmhouse-esq approach its more fitting. Behind the fruited quality is some roasty chared grain and mineral feel.

The taste is fruity like raison meets chocolate and almost provides an overall feel like im drinking the beer version of tootsie rolls. Mild minerals, carbonics and earthen attributes to the finish.

This is light bodied and excessively carbonated. Once you let the bubbles die down you get a unique representation of a schwarzbier. Not my favorite but unique and id expect nothing less from upright.

750ml Bottle
$5.99 (sale)
Everett's, South Beloit

"Upright bottles an imperial dark lager on even numbered years with no official title. The label artwork is inspired by the band Bad Brains, and the beer itself is a mix of classic German styles - pilsener and schwarzbier. It's a characterful bottle conditioned lager with a hop notes that hold up to the robust grist."

This guy sounds like a strange combination.

A quick pour into a pint glass produces a coffee brown body with bright auburn highlights running up the sides of the glass. The head explodes to a generous two fingers worth of bubbly ecru head that leaves sticky, spiderwebbed lacing down the glass. So far so good.

A brown bread doughy maltiness leads off the aroma, and stays at the forefront throughout, with a surprising helping of piney hops thrown in for good measure. Lightly roasted barley brings up the rear and adds a nice layer of depth. This isn't the most complex beer out there but it is inviting.

The roastiness picks up more in the flavor and makes for the prominent malt profile. The piney hoppiness adds a nice greenness and a mellow but lingering bitterness. Brown bread is still present and adds a touch of spice. I have to say, this beer is clean and crisp, which is surprising with the flavor profile. The bitterness seems to stick around and build as I work my way through the bottle.

There's not a lot to mention about the mouthfeel. It's neither good nor offensive. Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation that adds a little fluff.

This goofy concoction from Upright isn't mind blowing but it's certainly unique enough to keep me interested. It's something like a hoppy, rough around the edges schwarz. I'd go grab another of these at the sale price but probably wouldn't pay the $11.99 sticker.

Poured into a wide mouth wine glass and served at 50 degrees.

Appearance: Very dark brown color body with a tall dense 3 finger light brown color head, a bottle conditioned Saison kind of carbonation, light floating sediment and a beautiful looking lacing that sticks after every swirl.

Aroma: Lots of roasted barley & malts, coffee, burnt caramel, big bready yeast, light cocoa, a light nuttiness, lemon citrus and big piney hops. Interesting, I’m getting three distinct characteristics from a two lagers and an ale altogether here.

Taste: Heavy roasted malts, roasted yet bready barley, grainy malts, black coffee, burnt caramel & sweet molasses, bready Belgian yeast with tones of lemon citrus fruits, piney bitter hops, wheat and a slight nuttiness. All of these characteristics work well together and I like how this is complex yet simple at the same time. The roasted qualities are most dominant but the farmhouse, hops and the sweeter characteristics come through and balance out it all out very well. My favorite aspects among these qualities are the bready, yeasty & citrus elements along with the black roasted barley malts.

Mouth feel: Medium bodied, nicely balanced, smooth and sessional medium body and a high, heavy carbonation that really keeps the aroma/flavors moving along and helps cleanse the palate.

Overall: I enjoyed this along with all of their other creations (like their Saison Ales) that are also enjoyable and unique. I’m a fan of the Schwarzbier style lagers and it was nice to try a black lager that is different and unique from all of the others out there. If you’re a fan of the style pick a bottle up for the end of an evening!

Bottle shared by starrdogg. Thanks Matt!

The beer is dark brown with a thick, foamy tan head. The aroma brings some roast, brown bread, grain. The flavor is alright. Black lager and brown bread with a touch of coffee. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Lingering notes of molasses, maybe a hint of brown sugar. Overall, this was ok.

750ml bottle into a Teku glass. Huge thanks to bstyle.

A – Pours a dark, red hued brown body. Crazy amounts of dark grey foam. It was a real effort just to get a standard pour it would foam up so much. Crazy lacing and retention, this stuff just clumps onto the glass and stays forever.

S – Some faint citrus and fruity esters, pilsner malt, grass and light charred malts.

T – Faded piney hops, clean pilsner malt and Belgian yeast fruits followed by some lightly roasted malt and a lingering bitterness. Very drinkable yet very forgettable. Mouth feel is creamy and rich, very nice.

O – A very average but drinkable beer. The fact that the label is unbelievably bad ass completely makes up for it though.

Appearance. Pours a cola brown with half a glass of khaki foam that eventually fades to a flat topped volcano and leaves some chunky lacing.

Smell. Fruity yeast, some darker malts and a bit of caramel and floral hops. Interesting and different.

Taste. Floral hops, almost perfume-like. Some raisins and dark fruits along with fruity yeast esters, a little toasty darker malt and a bit of cocoa powder. Not really feelin' it here.

Mouthfeel. Below medium body, medium-low carbonation. Feels a little watery.

Overall. An interesting beer, but the flavours just weren't working for me.
